Lincoln photographer Stuart Wilde believes that“Say cheese.” might just be the truest wordsever spoken in the history of photography. Here,he explains to Molly’s Guide why... Go on, admitit, how many times have you looked at photo-graphs taken in a studio setting and discreetlythought to yourself: “They’re just so cheesy…”?

There’s a reason for that. Studio work can havecertain positives, but naturalness isn’t one of them. Many people are quite rightly uncomfortable with the forced and fake atmosphere inherent in many studio shoots.

Your home - or a similar setting of your choosing - is where you spend time with family and friends and by booking a home

photo-shoot, it negates the logistical nightmareof getting young children or elderly relatives, down to a studio. No computer trickery, no gritted teeth and fixed stares – just simple, beautifully taken, natural photos that encapsulate the moments you want to treasure.

With no studio overhead to worry about, theprice of a photo-shoot session is only £90. Withthat, you get your own private, unique pass-word locked gallery, where you can view andbuy only the prints you want, directly throughthe gallery, with print prices starting from as little as £5 - discs also available. So there’s no 'free shoot but the prints cost X-hundredpounds'. You control how much you spend.

The feedback is really nice, too. “Thank you somuch for taking such wonderful photos of our family, we really can't express how happy weall are with them” is just one of the recent comments I’ve received from a home photo-shoot booking. Beautifully done, natural photographs you’ll treasure forever, but whatever you do, just don’t say “cheese”.

Make sure youdon’t pay hundreds

of pounds for onlya few photos

Daddy Day Care'It's Christmas time, there's no need to beafraid', well so the song goes... But I'm alittle bit nervous. This year my childrenwill be old enough, to fall for an idea, thata chubby man with a sack full of toys forthem, will squeeze down the chimney onDecember 25th. It's partly true. I'll takethe stairs. I suppose this year I'll have tomake a proper effort and buy somethingappropriate for the two three-year-oldswho have everything. That is, specifically, everything made of plastic.

I should get used to the idea of fun atChristmas but it's a lot of effort for just oneday in my opinion. I saw mince pies on sale atthe end of September, heard Slade's 'MerryChristmas Everybody' by the end of Octoberand by the first week of November, I'd writtenoff any chance of landing the Mad Men Series1-5 box set with an ill-thought out comment tothe wife about a dream date with Joan.

I guess I'm afraid because this year I'll have thenoisiest Christmas since 1978 as two of Santa'slittle hell raisers tear my house apart, as theyrip through a huge pile of presents from familyand friends. All this chaos will happen at atime when, historically, I've usually put myselfin a position where I'm sensitive to loud thingsby eagerly celebrating goodwill to all men.

While I'm delighted people have chosen mychildren to create landfill, sorry, buy gifts for, I do worry that anything I buy will beoverlooked in the swamp of treats left under the tree.

I remember my dad saying me and my brothersenjoyed playing with the packaging rather

than the gift itself. Also there's the thing, where they are bored of what they received byBoxing Day and now want what their friend gotinstead. Frankly I'm not sure Action Man couldhandle the rejection.

Another rumour doing the rounds is that theboys won't sleep on Christmas Eve becausethey will be so excited, with a friend sayingthey'll drop off at about midnight and they willbe up at 4am, to start opening their Christmasstocking fillers. That's terrifying! Ok, I accept Ibetter drop the scrooge routine.

So in a nutshell, it's probably going to be apresent-filled, alcohol-fuelled, rip-roaring fewdays of unforgettable festive fun for the adultswatching children have the time of their lives.Seriously, 'It's Christmas time, there's no needto be afraid'...

Lincoln’s Christmas Market

06 WEBSITE: www.mollysguide.co.uk molly’s guide | Edition 4 | Winter 2012

Festive fun at the Lincoln ChristmasMarket. There’s plenty to keep childrenthoroughly entertained at this year’sLincoln Christmas Market.

From traditional festive tales like A ChristmasCarol and individual shows like ‘SeasonalShakespeare’ performed on stage at St Paul inthe Bail, to the sound of Christmas carolsfloating through the air and on streetentertainment, there’s something for everyone.

Children wishing to take something specialaway from the Lincoln Christmas Market thisyear, should head straight to the ChristmasCrafts tent at the Lawn. Helped by staff fromRuddocks of Lincoln, children will be able tomake crackers, cards and tree decorations forjust £2 per child.

Back by popular demand, the children’s WinterWonderland, with rides and activities includingthe Snow Globe, the merry-go-round and thePolar Express, is just next to the ChristmasCrafts tent.

Holly Parker, Events Officer at the City ofLincoln Council, which organises event, said:“There’s nothing quite like the festiveatmosphere at the Lincoln Christmas Market, and children are a big part of that. As well asthe magic of the market itself, we’ve gotactivities and entertainment for all the family. We hope everyone will have a fantastic festive time!”

A Creative Christmas

WEBSITE: www.mollysguide.co.uk molly’s guide | Edition 4 | Winter 2012

We have put together two simple Christmascraft ideas that can easily be done with thechildren of all ages. With help from The OldStation Nursery in Lincoln.

Festive Wreath This wreath can be made from items foragedfrom the garden, unwanted Christmasdecorations and wrapping accessories such asbows and ribbon and a great way for yourchildren to be creative and create their unique wreath. You will need;• Some card• PVA Glue • Paint and brushes• Scissors• Foliage from the garden• Glitter• Unwanted Christmas decorations

Use a dinner plate to trace a circle on thecard, find a tea plate to draw around for the inner circle of the wreath and cut out.Now simply allow the children to use theirimagination to create a wonderful festivewreath with all the resources available to them.

Handprint Christmas tree This Christmas tree is made simply fromhandprints and items found in your arts andcrafts drawer such as glitter and pom poms. You will need;• Coloured Card• Green paint• Paint brush• PVA Glue• Glitter• Pom poms or other craft resources

To create the Christmas tree get your child topaint their hand with the green paint. Thehand prints start at the top of the paper withjust one. On the next layer you place twohand prints side by side and finally the thirdlayer has three hand prints side by side. Once the Christmas tree has been created the children should use their artistic skills todecorate the tree with the glitter, pom pomsand other craft resources you have gathered.

Lincoln Ice RinkCRACKING PERFORMANCE PROFESSIONAL figure skaters and coachesKelly Hemingway and Neil Chilcott are toplay a starring role in celebrations tomark the return of Lincoln BIG’s Ice Rink.

Kelly and Neil are delighted that the Rink ismaking a comeback to the city thisChristmastime, after a one year break. Butthey are not the only ones - more than 2,000school pupils have already been booked in for skating sessions! Kelly and Neil, the businessbrains behind Skate Like The Wind – a school ofexcellence based at the Peterborough Ice Rink– and other rising stars of the ice, are set todazzle the crowds when they open the Rink onDecember 1.

It will remain open for public skating sessionseveryday, except Christmas Day and BoxingDay, right through until December 30. Inaddition to the opening performance by Kellyand Neil, people will be able to marvel atskaters Rose Happer and Eleanor Hayes, whowill be fresh from performing at the BritishChampionships a week earlier.

Ice dancers, sisters Emma and Katie Goring, who also compete a national level, promise tocaptivate the crowds.

Kelly said: “We are really excited about thereturn of the rink. It is really popular and weare delighted to see it making a comeback. Itwould be good if Lincoln could have its ownrink because it is a really popular sport, whichhas been helped by programmes like Dancingon Ice.” Lincoln BIG’s Ice Rink offers great funfor everyone from families with toddlers, toschool groups, adults and corporate groups –

and parties can even hire the “venue” fortheir own celebration. Parents will also bepleased to know that our fun Penguin skatingaids will also be returning to the rink this year– especially for youngsters who need a littlehelp to stay on their feet!

Lincoln Events and Promotions ManagerMichael Armstrong said: “A lot of people weredisappointed when we decided – on costgrounds alone – that we could not justifybringing the ice rink to the city last year. “Butwe are thrilled to say that we have made itone of our essential attractions for Christmas2012 and, judging how quickly school partieshave been eager to book sessions, it alreadylooks like we’ve made the right decision.

“Everyone is welcome to make the most of thisattraction and we would particularly like toencourage business parties to get their skateson and take to the ice as part of theirChristmas office celebrations.” Ice skatingsession start on the hour and last for 45minutes. Lincoln Drill Hall

12 WEBSITE: www.lincolndrillhall.com Box Office | 01522 873894

Lincoln Drill Hall has expanded its range ofactivities for younger children. Molly’s Guidewent along to find out what’s on offer.

If you’re looking for somewhere local to takeyour youngsters, try the Lincoln Drill Hall. The venue has long had a reputation forquality plays and performances, and is nowoffering more options for younger children.Marketing manager, Gavin Street, said: “Ourprogramme now has more things for childrenthan we have ever had before.

“We have tried to create a family atmosphereat the Drill Hall, with dedicated shows forlittle ones, as well as theatre groups withmembers from very different backgrounds whoare all local.

“We’ve recently introduced a play session foryoung children on a Monday morning, which isproving popular with parents and carers. Ournew Café Bar is becoming known as child-friendly place for parents to drop in.”

New play sessions for toddlers and pre-schoolchildren, called Happy Monday, have beenintroduced, in association with the RhubarbTheatre. The sessions, every Monday from10am-11am, include interactive story telling, music, dance, craft and other fun activities. Entry costs £3 per child (free for parents).Booking is essential.

On selected Saturdays, the Drill Hall runs aDiddy Disco, from 10.30am to 12.30pm,allowing toddlers to let off some steamdancing to music played by DJ Alice andfriends, while parents and carers can have afree cup of coffee. Face painting is availablein the café bar. Tickets £2.

The Drill Hall is also home to theatre groups, including the weekly YoungCut session for 14-18-year-olds; the Neon Youth Theatre for11-25-year-olds and the FishTank YouthTheater for seven-year-olds and over.

Lisa James (Below) took Zeddi (5) and Freya(2) to see the Birds Nest Theatre Companyperform Blown Away. Here’s what Zeddithought about it:“The play was about a boy who goes to bedand is visited by the wind, who wants to takehim on an adventure. At first the wind wasn’tvery strong. She asked the children in theaudience to blow hard so she could save allour puff to help her get stronger and take theboy way, way up into the clouds. It was reallygood because you could sit on cushions and bereally close to the actors. Freya is only twoand had never been to a play before, but shewas very good and sat watching. There wasjust one bit that frightened her. She liked thesinging and the bubbles that came down fromthe sky – the children were allowed to get upand go and catch them.

The wind took the boy back to bed, but whenhe woke up, he couldn’t remember anything. So the wind got a huge piece of paper andasked the children in the audience to drawwhat they could remember about the play, sowe could tell the boy what had happened.”www.lincolndrillhall.comBox office: 01522 873894

Heaps of Christmas Fun in Gainsborough

The Gainsborough Christmas Market will be

held this year on Sunday November 25th and

will be open from 10am until 3pm, the theme

being "A Right Royal Christmas”.

The market is always held on the last Sunday

of November and triggers the start of Sunday

Christmas shopping in the town. There will be

around 50 stalls this year with a choice of

charity, craft and trade as well as food for

the hungry.

Support from Gainsborough Town Council this

year means there will be even more

entertainment, including 2 rides for the little

ones which are completely free . Face-

painters, a balloon modeller, stilt walkers,

jugglers and a street magician will add

to the fun.

Also entertaining families will be 2 choirs, one

being the local Lea School children. Music will

be played throughout the day and the Town

Crier will also be on hand to announce events.

While in Gainsborough, it would be a shame to

miss the authentic Moroccan Christmas market

over at Marshall’s Yard which will be there

until December 23rd. There will be a wide

range of exciting, unusual and colourful

products for sale at the market.

Santa’s found the perfect place to stockup on Christmas presents this year, nowthat Ruddocks of Lincoln has opened upits new toy department.

If you’re looking for the perfect children’sChristmas presents this year, you’ll be pleasedto know you don’t have to drive for miles – orgo online.

Ruddocks of Lincoln – one of the city’s oldestbusinesses – now has a dedicated children’s toysection, with a huge array of toys to suit allbudgets. The High Street store opened its toydepartment this summer and is gearing up fora busy Christmas.

The new department is all thanks to owner andmanaging director Henry Ruddock’s seven-year-old twins, John and Sarah. Henry says:“Two years ago, the children made me realisethat there’s a different world out there. Ilooked around and thought ‘there’s nowhere inLincoln with a dedicated toy shop – why don’twe give it a go?’

“At first, we stocked a few toys to see howthey would sell, and we got some greatcomments and feedback from customers, whowere impressed with the fact that the toys westocked were a bit different. We then startedtalking to one or two suppliers and got accessto a whole new range of stuff.

“We slowly started to spread out with agreater range and then, in August, we openedour dedicated toy department.”Henry adds: “We have tried to concentrate onquality, creative and educational toys. “We’vegot things to do, things to learn, stuff toassemble, and things to make, such asjewellery. The twins give feedback on the toyswe stock.”

“There’s something for everyone here. We’vegot keepsakes, small presents, jigsaws andsmall toys that are suitable for taking onholiday. I would be very surprised if anyonecame into the shop and couldn’t findsomething to suit their requirements or theirprice range.

“But if there is something that people wouldlike to see that we don’t stock, I would like tohear from them. We do value customerfeedback.”

If there is something you think Ruddocksshould be stocking, email Henry Ruddock at:[email protected]

Enterprising Mums

In April 2011 I launched Studio 33, a social media management agency;where I manage the social mediaaccounts of business, promoting theirbrand and products on sites such asFacebook & Twitter. Over the last 18months I have successfully built up a portfolio of clients whose socialmedia accounts I have managed and I am now looking at also offering a consultancy service and growingStudio 33 further. Good timemanagement is essential; I need toensure I am on top of my work load

and moving my business forward aswell as being a good mum to my boysand having lots of family time. I trynot to let the 2 cross over, which isnot always possible but I have moretime with my family now than I everhave. Cyber bullying and internet securityHow safe is your child?

It’s been a long day at work and you’re busycooking tea. Your nine-year-old is in theirbedroom on the laptop and texting but whatare they doing?

Wrapping kids up in cotton wool doesn’t work –they need skills for life and they need to learnfor themselves but they also need to be awareof dangers in the cyber world.

The Internet and mobile phones are part of ourdaily lives but they have also opened up doorsfor those who wish to bully and takeadvantage of other children.\Chat rooms, MySpace, e-mail, Facebook, instant messaging and other online tools havehelped create problems for parents, carersand schools.

Cyber bullying, when a child is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated orembarrassed is a growing problem in primaryschools which can leave emotional scars.

A small study carried out by the Anti-BullyingAlliance (ABA) in south east England revealedone in five children questioned had beenbullied online or by phone.

The ABA say parents and carers must learn howto help children protect themselves – a viewshared by Dan Hawbrook from Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Board. One safeguardavailable through the Lincolnshire SchoolsNetwork is Securus – a system that can flag up potentially inappropriate behaviour on computers.

Securus can look for activity such as predatorygrooming, bullying and even suicidal thoughtsby pupils.

Netsweeper, which blocks anything from socialnetworking at school to accessing unsuitablematerial, is in place at the vast majority ofschools in the county. But as Dan Hawbrook, e-safety officer with Lincolnshire SafeguardingChildren Board said although technologicalinnovations help they are not the total solution.

Children need to be taught how to use theinternet safely to help them not just now butwhen they are older.

“Technology is a bit like having a lifeguard at a swimming pool – it does keep children saferbut if you teach them how to swimthemselves, you’ve given them a skill for life!”The Child Exploitation and Online ProtectionCentre (CEOP) say it’s not just mobile phonesand computers which can cause problems –gaming sites and consoles can also bedangerous places.

Page 29: MG - Winter 2012

Internet Safety

“Like any programme that is online, gamingsites and consoles which connect to theinternet allow children to potentially haveaccess to those who they don’t know,” said aCEOP spokesman.

“The advice is the same for whichever waythey connect – whether it be mobile, socialnetworking, chat or gaming – it’s important toremember that people who you meet onlinecan lie or manipulate.

“Children need to remember that their onlinelife may have offline consequence and that ifthey feel uncomfortable they need to tell theirparents and CEOP.”

TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS AND CARERS

Start young! Know who your children aretalking to and what they’re doing. Get theminto safe surfing habits when they start usingthe computer.

Make using the computer a family activity andput laptops and other devices which connectto the internet in a family room.

Help your kids to understand that they shouldnever give out personal details (e-mailaddresses, mobile phone numbers or picturesof themselves) to online friends.

If your child receives e-mails from people theydon’t know (eg junk or spam mail) remindthem not to open it.

Help your child to understand that somepeople lie online and therefore it’s better tokeep online friends online.
