    Background

    Express Media is part of the Lakson Group of Companies

    It initially had one head office in Karachi, Pakistan, but

    later on the Express News branch had its own head office

    in Lahore.

    Express News consists 5 branches, Express News, Express

    Tribune, Daily Express, Sindhi Express and Express

    Entertainment.

    Express follows a divisional organizational structure i.e.

    Planning and Strategic Management

    Plans are analyzed, implemented and if they are deemed unfit theyare discarded.

    Planning is considered crucial for the company. Most of the future of

    the company is planned, and contingency plans are always kept ready

    for unpredictable events. There is even a separate department for

    planning.

    As part of strategic management, Express English channel waslaunched, as the company thought it would be a good strategy and the

    country needed an English news channel.

    However it failed and was closed down as locals, even those who

    knew English, preferred to watch news in Urdu.

    Long term plan is to maximize speed and efficiency.

    Planning plays a crucial role

    Have to be on the top in order to maintain viewership and ratings

    Pre-planning about events such as World Cup, Ramzan, Eid. Contingency plans about unforeseen circumstances like blasts or events that

    require prolonged coverage like droughts, floods etc.

    Assignment of air-time to different sectors during news like entertainment,sports

    All these events have to be decided before hand else they run short of airtime

    and hence lose revenue in terms of advertisements that they recieve

    External Threats and Opportunities

    The media industry today is an ever-growing industry It is expanding on a regular basis

    Within the past 5 years around 15 new channels have emerged

    This tough competition always require the existing organizations to

    DO MORE

    Competitor analysis showed 25 news channels currently operating inPakistan.

    Express News face competition from only 4 namely Samaa, ARY, DAWN

    and GEO, and considers itself one of the top 5 news channels.

    Recognizes GEOs dominance and strives to become first.

    Director News has 4-5 screens in his control room where he is benchmarking the

    performance of Express in accordance to his competitors.

    However, due to the tightening control of PEMRA, the new news channels tendto face a lot of issues pertaining to survival

    Express has an edge of an established brand name. They have many ventureswaiting to be exploited whilst other competitors like Dawn, Samaa etc. dont

    have much at their disposal

    They are expanding exponentially. Their growth rate has been phenomenal sochances for future are even better.

    Internal Strengths and Weaknesses

    A professional CEO is considered a great strength of Express News, givingthem advantage over other news channels.

    Well-organized structure due to a lot of preplanning, ensuring smooth running

    of the company even in difficult times.

    Constant creation of plans and contingency plans to create or seize

    opportunities.

    Employees follow heavily controlled job descriptions which are needed to

    ensure consistency and efficiency.

    They have been known for being creative and innovative. First ever virtual

    Structure is too tall needs to be simplified for rapid decision makingprocesses, as well as ease communication through the levels of hierarchy.

    Since news industry is very fast paced it gives little time for decision makingof the quality and quantity of news items and this can some times result in

    errors.

    The levels of hierarchy at times lead to excessive bureaucracy, which leads to

    an uncalled for delay in decision making. Although they have specified layers of management, yet they are still working

    on it. After so many years of operations, they are still unable to define aproper defined structure to follow. This is a cause of worry.
