IIT Kharagpur, the first andthe largest IIT
Kharagpur (KGP) is located within
130Kms of Kolkata. It is in the West
Midnapore district in the state of West
Bengal. It is said that the name of Kharagpur
derived from the name of old Shiva temple
called ‘Khargeswar’ located on the outskirts
of Kharagpur. Kharagpur was chosen as the
location of the first campus of the
prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology
(IITs). Kharagpur also has one of the biggest
railway workshops in India with the longest
railway platform in the world. Historically,
Kharagpur was a part of Hijli Kingdom and
ruled by Bengali Hindu rulers. Kharagpur
is well-connected with the rest of the nation
by rail & road.
IIT Kharagpur, the oldest, largest and the most diversified of all IITs, has
a rich history of excellence created over more than 60 years of its
existence. It has a very impressive and long list of alumni who have made
a significant impact on all sectors of academia, industry and society. It

The motto of IIT Kharagpur is "Yoga Karmesu Kaushalam". The source
of the motto is Sri Krishna's discourse to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita. The
motto literally translates to "Excellence in action is Yoga", which
essentially implies that doing your work well is (true) yoga. The brightest
minds in the country come to study in this coveted institution. They live
in an extremely diverse and competitive environment where they
continuously strive for excellence. The students are trained by the best
teachers in the country who are renowned experts in their respective
fields. The students have the opportunity to undertake their study from a
wide variety of courses. Moreover, they get knowledge about industry
trends and latest developments through guest lecture series and panel
discussions by industry stalwarts. Events by various cells and committees
and alumni meets widen their horizons. The emphasis is on in-depth
thinking, methodical approach and originality. However, this knowledge
is accompanied by values of humanity and leadership.
Over and above a rigorous academic schedule, IIT Kharagpur lays great
emphasis on all-round development of the students. A gamut of
academic, cultural, social, leadership events aide in the holistic
development of students and help them to imbibe in them the qualities
of integrity, relationship, teamwork, hard work and out-of-the-box
thinking. The students can join a variety of societies and clubs according
to their interests. World-class sports facilities are available on campus.

First home todiversified HR in IndiaThe Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is one of the first
departments established from the very inception of IIT Kharagpur. Its primary objective
was to provide value-based liberal education to budding scientists and engineers. With
the passage of time, the department has further evolved with additional academic
programs and responsibilities to meet the contemporary social and business challenges.
Unlike the university departments, the Department of Humanities and Social Science
(HSS) in the IIT system is unique in its diversity, The Department of HSS at IIT
Kharagpur houses many disciplines such as English, Languages, Economics,
Philosophy, Psychology, Human Resource Management and Sociology. The
Department has been always actively engaged in teaching, research, training and
outreach activities.
The Department understands that it is not only its responsibility to generate new
knowledge and skills but also to disseminate the same to a larger fraternity. It conducts
about 12 programmes annually for the benefit of academicians, managers, and
executives. It also engages in welfare activities and action research in and around IIT
Kharagpur. The Department takes up research and consultancy projects from public and
private agencies. The research conducted by the department is well-appreciated in India
and abroad. The Department, on an average, produces at least 10 Ph.Ds and publishes
about 30 papers in refereed journals annually. Some of the important events of the
Department include the annual "Tagore Memorial Lecture" and frequent interactions
with the industry and academic institutions through special lectures and workshops.
The Tagore Memorial Lectures in past were delivered by eminent speakers like
Professor Nissim Ezekiel, Soumendranath Tagore, V.V. John, J.V. Narliker, William
Radice and Amitav Ghosh. The industry guest lectures saw participation from industry
leaders such as H&M, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, Atlas Copco etc.
The Department runs two programmes, a five-year Integrated M. Sc. in Economics and
a two-year Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM). The qualifying exam
for the M. Sc. programme is JEE and for the MHRM programme is CAT. The MHRM
programme was started in 2010 and has replaced the earlier M.Tech. (HR) programme
which existed since 1982. The curriculum has been redesigned and tailored to meet the

Learning about latest trends inHR through industry interactionKeeping ourselves abreast about the practical applications of the curriculum concepts we learn is an integral part of MHRM
culture. We achieve this by inviting HR professionals from various industries to discuss the HR practices and policies their
organizations have. This helps us streamline our academic curriculum with the HRM changes in the world, making our course
fresh and pro-active.
Our aim is to make such interactions more effective and mutually beneficial to HR professionals as well. We are planning for
more types of interactions such as conclaves, workshops, seminars, personal development sessions etc. The conclave will serve as
a platform for a panel of HR professionals to interact and tackle upcoming HR issues in the world.

A potpourri of activitiesMHRM students are not like typical MBA students who are always busy with presentations and case studies. With equal
importance being given to co-curricular activities, holistic development is the motto of MHRM. Each and every student is a
member of a MHRM committee. Students choose their field of interest and a committee according to it. Moreover they can
choose from a wide spectrum of clubs and societies operating in the campus. These societies are extremely diverse and are
independently run by the student community.
Some MHRM committees are:
This committee manages industry interaction with our present and future recruiters. All industry projects and internships being
taken up by students are co-ordinated by this team. They make the placement process smooth, for the students as well as the
recruiters.
This team is involved in improving the study content, bringing in latest trends from industries as well as facilitating student-
industry interaction
They are involved in handling the course website as well as making the course more visible in academic and industry circles.
They also facilitate the process of new admissions.
After all case-studies and presentations, it is the time to unwind and Cultcom is the committee that provides a stage to MHRM
students to showcase their talent. They are involved in celebrating festivals and organising parties.
This team is involved in maintaining contact with the alumnus of our programme, taking their guidance, providing them
information about the recent developments in the campus and other engagement programmes.
“The People Tree”, a bi-annual e- Magazine, is an earnest initiative by the students of Master of Human Resource Management,
Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Kharagpur, to provide a platform for HR enthusiasts across B-schools and
different industries to share their ideas and perspectives on a spectrum of issues related to Human Resource Management.
Some of the other societies which are popular among MHRM students are Technology Dance Society, Hindi and English
Dramatics Societies, Eastern and Western Music Societies, Debating Society, Photography & Film making Society etc. They can
also choose to work for international & national work-groups such as AIESEC, Teach for India, Vivekanand Study Circle etc.
