On behalf of the Athletic Department, I’d like to welcome you to the Archbishop McCarthy High School Fall Athletic Magazine. Maverick teams have a rich history of excellence on and off the playing field. One of the primary goals of our athletic program is to accentuate the development of the whole student and help them achieve a personal level of excellence in the areas of academics, fitness, teamwork, commitment, respect for others, and sportsmanship. Currently, we field 33 varsity, 19 junior varsity, 2 freshmen, and 2 club teams. Over the past 21 years our varsity teams have won 93 district team titles, 35 regional team titles, 10 team state championships, (seven in baseball and two in women’s golf and one in men’s volleyball), 7 team state runner up, and 9 individual state championships. At the national level, our baseball team has won two National Titles, one FCDA National Championship in Dance, and two individual National Champions in wrestling. Throughout our school’s history, the varsity sports program has maintained a winning percentage of close to 70%.

Last year, our varsity teams once again ranked as one of the top 1A to 6A programs in Broward County as we posted an overall record of 382 wins, 217 losses, and 1 tie. The men’s cross country, women’s basketball, softball and baseball teams were district runner up. Both men’s and women’s golf teams earned a District Championship and advanced to the State Tournament where the women’s team finished as the State Runner up. Our women’s soccer team were District and Regional Champions and finished State Runner up. The women’s volleyball team earned a District Title and were Regional Finalists. Our women’s weight lifting team earned District and Regional Championships. The men’s volleyball team earned both District and Regional Champions and finished as State Semi- Finalists. The women’s beach volleyball team earned championships in their division, district and regional tournaments thus advancing to the State Championship for the first time in school history. The Maverick Legacies Dance Team were National Finalists in the Small Varsity Jazz competition. Our competition cheerleaders once again qualified for their State Competition. Our women’s soccer coach, Mike Sica, was named Coach of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers Association, The Miami Herald and SunSentinel newspapers. Our men’s volleyball Coach, Corey Marks, received Coach of the Year Honors from both The Herald and SunSentinel newspapers.

Academically, our fall, winter, and spring teams were named FHSAA Overall 6A Team Academic Champions. Teams being named FHSAA 6A Academic Team Champions were football; women’s volleyball, basketball and soccer; men’s soccer and basketball; and competition cheerleading. Overall, our varsity teams averaged an un-weighted GPA of a 3.0 or higher. The athletic department is very proud of these accomplishments, as our coaches work hard to maintain the values and philosophies of the school.

Individually, over the last 21 years, 223 of our athletes have earned First Team All-County Honors in a variety of sports by the local media, and 245 have signed college scholarships to continue both their academic and athletic careers.
