Practices will resume at Riverside on Mondays and Wednesdays unless the weather is good enough for some outdoor practices (which is highly unlikely). But I urge you, if possible, to go out in sunny 40 or 50 degree weather and play some tennis. There should be more matches in the spring season. The officers discussed at the last officer meeting the idea of having a tournament within the club. This would either be at Riverside or after spring break when the weather is nicer outside. Please email your thoughts to the officers. On February 4 th , there will be a serving competition at 1 PM in the south gym of Withrow Court. The proceeds will benefit Miami University’s tennis program. 7 serves will cost $5 and 12 serves will be $10. The winner will receive a tennis bag. So start pumping some iron in the gym in preparation. Furthermore, if you know of anyone interested in joining club tennis, it is never too late. Have them email Christian Dailey. Lastly, have a good semester and try to come out to practice. -KM January 2012 Vol. II, Issue 3 Arizona Spring Invitational @Tucson, Arizona April 20 – 22, 2012 Upcoming Competition Dates: Officers Co Presidents : Christian Dailey & Abby Schiller Vice President : David Ruedi Secretary : Caroline Bennett Treasurers : Mike Goldman Public Relations : Katie Mark Social Chair : Brett Ausubel Fundraising Chair : Katie Fidelholtz By: Katie Mark

A Writer’s Note Hey everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed your holidays, New Year festivities, and took it easy with the eggnog.

On February 4th, there will be a serving competition at 1 PM in the south gym of Withrow Court.

Recap

The fall season generated some exceptional

tournament results. Most notably, the silver bracket championship trophy won at the Badger Classic in

Wisconsin. There were around four competitions in the fall with a good mixture of different

members playing.

Most importantly, the fall club

tennis parties were quite entertaining. A

Treasurer: Mike Goldman

Sophomore strategic

communications major Mike Goldman comes from Princeton, New Jersey. Goldman started playing tennis at age 5. Originally, his mom started him in tennis.

Once Goldman started watching the pros playing tennis on TV, he knew that he wanted to do what they were able to do. After college, Goldman hopes to work as a public relations agent for an event planning business. Apart from playing tennis, his hobbies include playing the piano, following the Buffalo Bills, being active within his Delta Chi fraternity, playing basketball and golf, and watching his favorite sitcom, Modern Family. Goldman’s favorite spot on campus is the tennis courts. He enjoys the relaxing environment and the beautiful scenery and buildings. As for his favorite place Uptown, Fiesta Charra is his top choice. He loves the Mexican food, cheap drinks, and positive atmosphere. Harris Dining Hall will always be Goldman’s favorite dining hall. “While the food can be gross and all be the same color, it brings back some great memories,” Goldman says.

Player Spotlight: Alex Catanese

Favorite place uptown and why?: Oh, sweet Brick. Yes, Brick Street. Popcorn has never tasted so good (especially when you're having a good time at 90's night). Favorite dining hall and why?: I know that everyone usually says that Dividends is so good. But honestly, I am not going to wait in line for 25 minutes to get a salad. Nope. You can't make me. I really like eating at Bell Tower because there's such a wide variety to choose from. When I'm feeling stir fry: BOOM - They have it. When I'm feeling popcorn chicken bowl: BOOM - They have it. When I'm feeling Mexican: BOOM - They have it. I think you get the gist of this...

From: Mentor, OH Major: Diplomacy & Global Politics When did you start playing tennis and why?: I started playing tennis in fourth grade. I really liked the fact that you have to have a strong mentality to play this sport, along with quick thinking and decision making. I liked it better than the idea of me playing football, which never came to fruition. What influenced you to play tennis?: I was at school one day (4th grade) and there was an older guy and a younger kid (probably high school aged) playing tennis on the courts at our school. I could tell this kid was pretty good and I couldn't stop watching them play. That's when I really wanted to give it a shot. What do you want to do after college?: If everything works according to my grand plan, I hope to go to law school and then eventually practice either in D.C. or New York. I'd like to work in the private sector, either for a law firm or lobbying firm, before I would consider working in the public sector. What are your hobbies?: I love hanging out with my friends at home. We play a lot of Mario Kart on the N64 and Wii and let me tell you, it gets pretty intense. Thursday nights are when you can find me glued to a TV. NBC's comedy lineup is essentially the only thing I watch, which includes Parks and Recreation, The Office and 30 Rock. On a more serious note, I strive to keep myself updated with everything related to politics and other global issues. For example, the 2012 election is like my Super Bowl. Favorite spot on campus and why?: I really like central quad. By that I mean I just like walking through central quad on my way to class. In the fall, winter and spring; it's just really a beautiful site to see (the whole landscape itself and of course, all of the sorority girls who make their way to class with their vineyard vine bags and polo hats). And plus, that's what's on all of the postcards you'll find in your mailbox when Miami needs money from you 5 years after you graduate.

special thanks to our social chair,

Brett Ausubel, for throwing some raging parties.

In January, some members of the club team went down to Miami, Florida to

play a tournament against Florida International University (FIU) and the University of Miami (UM). Miami’s club team beat both FIU and

UM. Miami won every match.

The tournament schedule for the spring

season is still being determined and should be out in a few weeks. Due to winter weather, practices

are difficult to get in so the season will not fully pick up until after spring break.

We have a new club tennis website. It will be updated regularly. There is information regarding the officers, club news, an archive of club newsletters, tournament photos, and practice photos. Don’t forget you can get information from the Twitter account, too! Link: http://www.wix.com/katiemark/miami-university-club

Email Katie Mark if you are interested in taking practice and tournament photos.
