What’s Inside

Welcome to August! Historically this is one of the hottest and driest months here in Indiana. Hope-fully we’ll get some needed rain during the week and sunny, cool days on the weekends.

Thanks to Steve and Herm for hosting the recent Skyline Drive Tour and to Bob Wickware for host-ing the Night Before the Brickyard 400 Mingle.

This next tidbit may seem a little different and breaks all top down codes except for the mid winter runs, but here it is. Caution! Nerd alert!

I once heard someone say that when they drive their convertible in the heat of the day, with their top down, that they put their windows up and it helps the air conditioner work much better. Well, on the last rally I tried it and with the windows up just four or five inches there was an instant 5 to 10 degree temperature drop. While I felt somewhat uneasy about the look, the windows still stayed partly up the rest of the drive; it was just too hot out to worry about it!

Don’t miss the upcoming rally on August 20th, which my wife and I are putting together. This rally will leave Martinsville at 10:00AM taking some nice Miata roads to Madison, IN. While this is not an overnight event, feel free to stay in the area. The Ogle Haus (Best Western) in Vevay, just up river on SR56 would be an excellent choice. If you like ribs and bluegrass, the annual Ribberfest will be hap-pening in Madison. There are several wineries in the area with three in Madison, one of which is on Mill Street just a block off the river.

My next adventure is an overnight trip from Indy. The area was a family favorite when the kids were little. It is an area in southeast Ohio called Hocking Hills. This is located about half way between Columbus, Ohio and Marietta, Ohio where the semi-annual Tom Lewis trip begins. The next time this rally is held, add an extra day to see the area. You may preview this area by using Google Earth and fol-lowing the route from a search of Lancaster, Ohio. There are several pictures along the route included with the map. From I270S around Columbus take SR33 exit towards Lancaster, Ohio. Turn right onto SR374. This is a nice winding road and will lead you to several interesting sights.

The first is Cantwell Cliffs. This area is similar to Turkey Run with large limestone walls. It also has a nice height, but small volume waterfall. After your visit continue on SR374 to Rock House. This area is a large cave on the hillside with large openings or windows. The cave is rumored to have been used as a hideout for outlaws in yesteryear.

When leaving continue on SR374 (it will join with SR668). Just off a left turn onto CR 11 is the next stop at Conkle’s Hollow. This area follows a streambed back to another waterfall.

For the more adventuresome, there is a rim trail with an excellent overlook of the area. Return to SR374 and follow the roadway to Old Man’s Cave. Old Man’s Cave is similar to Turkey Run, but fol-lows a stream along sandstone bluffs. The carving away of the sandstone has cut depressions into the walls creating recess caves. There is a formation that looks like an old man’s face, hence the name. This area includes two waterfalls, small sandstone bridges and a stairway tunnel through the sandstone. This is probably the most popular of the attractions in the Hocking Hills area. There are cabins in this area, but I am not familiar with the rentals. To travel to the next sight, continue on SR374 to Cedar Falls. This area follows a trail through hemlocks and ends at the waterfall. For the last stop continue on SR374 until it tees into SR56. Turn right and follow SR56 to the Ash Cave area. Ash Cave is another recess cave with a one hundred foot waterfall. While Hocking Hills is beautiful at any time, it is most spectacular in the fall.

Let's Take A Peek At The Event Page!Larry and Sabrena's rally finally got a name! The Madison Miata Mania

(AKA the Smith Family Annual Rally) is scheduled for August 20th. This event will leave Martinsville in the morning and arrive along the Ohio Riv-er in old Madison in early afternoon. The route will follow existing known fun runs and a newly paved treasure near Madison. The rally will end at the Key West Shrimp House for lunch.

Madison will be having their annual Ribberfest this weekend with lots of Barbecue and Bluegrass as an alternate or additional activity. The Ribber-fest has an entrance fee which can be discounted if purchased in advance at http://visitmadison.org/store/event-tickets/. If that doesn't interest you, spend the rest of the day following the Indiana Wine Trail, visiting Clifty Falls State Park or relaxing along the river.

Meet at the Walgreens at SR37 and Ohio Street (1 light South of Walmart on SR37). The Drivers Meeting will start at 9:30AM, with the first car leav-ing at 10:00AM.

Other upcoming events include the Indy Miata Club Invades St. Louis on the weekend of September 10 and the Newport Hill Climb Rally on October 1.

On August 27th is our Night Before the Red Bull Grand Prix Mingle. THIS EVENT IS IN NEED OF AN ORGANIZER!! The date has been set but we still need to have an organizer to pick a spot for this mingle. If you haven’t yet helped organize an event, now is the time! A mingle is the easiest event to hot. Find a drive-in, ice cream place, or something like that with a good parking area, set a time and show up! Unless we get an organizer for these event, it may be cancelled. If you need help, need some ideas or have some ideas; again, please contact Ken at [email protected].

Don't forget about the "Indy Miata Club Invades St Louis" event on Sep-tember 10th. This will be a weekend with minimal group activities other than the drives. Attendees will be given information on locations of the "thousands" of restaurants in the area of the hotel for them to take meals, in small, friendly bunches.

We will be operating out of the DoubleTree Hotel & Conference Center. A block of 12 rooms has been reserved until August 20th. Tell Reservations (636-299-9846) that you are part of the Indy Miata club (or reservation #85288005).

Steve is planning on having three separate drives, a Saturday morning, a Saturday afternoon and a Sunday morning. Attendees can pick and choose which they want to do. The Saturday drives will both start and end at the hotel, with restaurants close by. Sunday's will end farther south of St. Louis (off I-55) for a brunch/lunch, with everyone free to depart for home from there.

If you are continuing to Marietta, turn right out of the parking lot and follow SR56 towards Athens, Ohio. Turn right on SR682 and follow the merge onto SR32 East bound. Follow SR32/50 to SR690. Turn left onto SR690. At the Tee turn right onto SR550. Follow SR550 for about 32 miles and you will arrive at Marietta. Or you could plug the destination into your GPS and just go!

Have a great August and see you at a Rally soon.

Open Road 3January 2011 Open Road 3 August 2011

The trip to Marietta for this year’s “non-event” gathering of Miatas from several states was anything but “non-eventful”. This year brought a record number of Miatas - nearly 40 - from Indy, Detroit, Cleveland, and Columbus and everywhere in between to meet in Marietta to enjoy the incredible, made-for-Miatas roads of Southeastern Ohio. The natural geography of the region in the foothills of the Appalachians, the close proximity to the Ohio River and the infusion of Federal Stimulus Money into the state’s infrastructure combine to provide some of the most entertaining and beautiful roads within a few hours’ drive of Indy.

Ten Miatas met on the east side of Indy to caravan to our destination. After a brief bio-break at a rest stop just over the Ohio border and a one hour lunch in Columbus, we arrived in Zanesville and the start of the Triple Nickel, Ohio State Road 555, the first of many incredible roads we’d be driving during the course of three days. Running from the south side of Zanesville all the way to the Ohio River, the Triple Nickel provides over 60 miles of tight curves and elevation changes that will prompt even those with a strong constitution to eat a Dramamine or two. What a ride!

At the terminus of SR 555, we regrouped and then made the short five minute drive to the beautiful home of Jeff and Debbie Householder in Little Hocking. The Householders graciously opened their home to Miata owners from all over the Midwest, including a great group of folks from the MiMiata Club from Southeast Michigan. Despite the extra warm temperatures, we were all able to keep cool with cold water and sodas while we dipped our feet in the Householder’s gorgeous backyard swimming pool. Soon after, several huge and delicious pizzas arrived and everyone enjoyed their fill. After stuffing ourselves with pizza, we then topped it all off with some “Marietta Madness” chocolate chip pan-cookies. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Jeff and Debbie for their hospitality and generosity.

As we got to our cars for the short drive along the Ohio River into Marietta, the first of many ‘events’ happened, Laura went to start her Miata and… nothing! Turn the key and nothing, not even a click. So, got out the jumper cables, hooked ‘em up and… nothing! With the help of Roger Burrill, we disassembled the ignition switch, jiggled a few wires, and turned the key,

Marietta, June 2011 - A novella by Tom Lewisstill nothing! RATS! OK, last resort – let’s try a push start. With the help of several hands we pushed Laura’s Miata into an open stretch of grass, got it rolling, and popped the clutch, and Ignition! We’re off and rolling, but with a sense of dread for what the weekend’s future may hold for Laura’s under-the-weather Miata.

Saturday morning started off quite non-eventful; after sitting overnight, Laura’s Miata fired up on the first try as we moved to the parking lot to assemble for the “Big Drive”. Miatas of all generations arrived, which included two highly modified V8 examples, including MiMiata’s Larry Butterfield’s unusual BUICK 215 cubic inch V8. As with any large group of drivers, some like to go fast, some not so much. So, it was decided to break the large group into two, allowing the more spirited drivers to leave a few minutes ahead of the rest of the group As we gathered for the driver’s meeting, three Miatas from Columbus, OH decided they preferred not to have ANYONE ahead of them and they left early. Ten minutes later, the Spirited Group departed and shortly after, the rest of the group departed.

The first part of our drive took us up State Road 26, one of Car and Driver Magazine’s “10 Best Roads”. This spectacular road twists and turns through some absolutely beautiful landscape, at least for the navigator – I doubt the drivers saw too much of the scenery as they negotiated the curves on this exquisite road. We stopped for a quick photo-op at the Rinards Mill covered bridge before rolling into Woodsfield, where everyone purchased their picnic lunches at Riesbeck’s Market, or one of the other sources in town like Subway. After grabbing food to enjoy a bit later, we hopped back into our cars and… uh-oh, Laura’s Miata is DOA! OK, so we give her a push start and we’re on our way again.

We continued north out of Woodsfield on SR 26 towards the scene of last year’s “incident” at “Norm’s Corner” where Norm Purdy (MiMiata) entered a turn a bit too hot, locked up the brakes and went sailing off the road, taking out the bottom of his radiator. We’re happy to report Norm made it through ‘his’ turn this time and his Miata was able to return home on it on volition, not on a flatbed tow truck like last year. Way to go Norm!

We wound our way down to SR 7 along continued on page 4

the Ohio for a few hundred yards, jumped onto SR 78 to get to our highlighted road of the day, SR 536, also known as the “Little Dragon” or “Ohio’s Tail of the Dragon”. While not having the number of curves, this road is every bit as thrilling and challenging as its big brother on Tennessee/North Carolina border. And being that there is virtually no traffic or LEOs patrolling the roads, and with a 55 MPH speed limit to boot (vs. the 30 MPH limit on the ‘real’ dragon), this road is an absolute blast! At least for some…

One of our members and his extremely capable navigator, seemed to have gotten their wires crossed. The navigator swears she said “hard right, hard right”, but somehow the instructions didn’t get through as the driver locked up all four wheels and proceeded to attempt flight in his Miata as they sailed straight off the road while it made its ‘hard right”. Luckily threading his car between a telephone pole and the yellow rectangular sign with a big black arrow pointing to the ‘hard right”, their short flight ended with the Miata doing a chin-plant, setting off the steering wheel airbag and causing our driver to put a pretty good bend in his steering wheel. Fortunately, no one was hurt, the damage limited to the steering wheel and airbag, and our Miata aviators drove out of the field and were back on the road in a matter of minutes. However, I hear the Big Gulps they were nursing didn’t fair too well and our air travelers ending up wearing them as opposed to consuming them.

After the thrilling ride down 536, we entered the Hannibal Locks picnic grounds along the mighty Ohio River where we enjoyed our picnic lunches as the river barges passed through the massive locks.

Back on the road after lunch… wait, hold on, Laura needs a push start. OK, rolling again, we headed down SR 7 along the Ohio to the town of Sardis where we hook up with SR 255, another thrilling, undulating road. No mishaps on this stretch. We wind our way up 255, catch SR 800 north for a couple miles before retracing our route back on SR 26 for a few miles. We then catch SR 537, then on to SR 260 before finally catching back up to SR 26 and the ride back into Marietta. Arriving back at the hotels around 4:00PM, we all headed for the showers and a brief rest before venturing out for dinner on our own.

Most of those staying overnight ventured out to the wide variety of Marietta’s downtown restaurants on their own, while Laura and I selected the familiar environs of the Marietta Brewing Company. While there, I received a call from Brian Liechty, who had left early to make the seven hour drive home to Plymouth, IN, Saturday night. It seems Brian was following three other Miatas from Columbus, OH north on the Triple Nickel. While

entering a downhill left-then-right “S” into an overhanging canopy of trees creating a tunnel, the Miata in front of Brian had his back end come around on him and launched him nose first into the steep dirt embankment. After literally carving a huge chunk of dirt from the earth, the Miata proceeded to roll several time before coming to a rest with the formerly shiny side DOWN. Brian, seeing what was taking place in front of him, slowed, but not in time before HIS back end came around on him, too. Fortunately for Brian, his Miata stayed upright and ‘only’ ended up to the floorboards in the muck of the ditch, which after a winching out from the tow truck yielded no significant damage – but, a lot of mud.

Meanwhile, The driver and passenger of the up side down Miata, a middle aged dad (duh!) and his twenty-something son, somehow crawled out from under the crushed soft top and pan-caked windshield with only a few bruises. Their poor Miata was turned upright and loaded on to a flatbed and hauled away. Fortunately, the remaining two Miatas heading back to Columbus had empty passenger seats, so Dad and Son were able to sleep in their own beds that night. Probably didn’t sleep too well, I’d suppose.

Awakening Sunday morning to grey clouds and puddles in the parking lot from an overnight rain, we were feeling a bit apprehensive about heading up the Triple Nickel in light of the preceding evening’s incidents. After hearing of the 555 incident, the group from SE Michigan’s MiMiata Club made the decision to definitely NOT drive 555 on the way home Sunday, instead opting for the Interstate 77 to I-70 route. But, I’m

not one to let a little fear intimidate me. I’m confident of my driving abilities and know my limits and my car’s limits, and I’ll be darned if I’m going to let that road conquer me! Wet or dry, I came to drive the Triple Nickel two times this weekend; so we're going!

Turns out our Indy Miata Caravan had whittled its way down to just three cars – Roger and Nancy Burrill, Laura and me. Laura’s Miata fired up on the first twist of the key and we were off, traveling SR 7 south out of Marietta to our rendezvous with the 555 where it begins to snake its way north from the Ohio River in Little Hocking. Grey skies turned to partly sunny conditions as we settled into our seats south of Marietta. By the time we reach the Triple Nickel 20 minutes later, the air was warm and the sun was making itself known. And most importantly, the roads were dry. With virtually no other traffic to deal with on a late Sunday morning and Roger in the lead, we soon found ourselves into the rhythm of rowing between gears as we carved perfect lines through each corner, ascending hills with blind crests that triggers the adrenaline that hits as you reach the peak of the hill and can then, and only then, determine if you’ll need left or right steering input, or brakes, or gas… What a thrill! Keep in mind that the Triple Nickel has a speed limit of 55 MPH, except for the towns, of course, and most of the time, you’re nowhere close to going 55. Most time is spend rowing between 3rd of 4th gear, with some tighter curves that’ll require 2nd to keep the momentum moving forward. Speed is just not necessary on these roads in order to fully enjoy the capabilities of a Miata.

But it seemed Laura was more about a leisurely Sunday drive in the country and the Burrills and I soon found ourselves alone. Every once in a while we’d slow to allow Laura to catch up. It was after an extra long period of time since we’d seen Laura in our rear-view mirrors that we actually stopped for about five minutes until Laura came tooling around the corner. As I released my parking brake and engaged the clutch, I could immediately tell that something was wrong, the right rear e-brake had not disengaged and was dragging on the rotor. Quickly pulled over and gave the emergency brake a few hearty cycles which seemed to loosen things up a bit. But after a few miles, I could tell there was still a bit of drag. So I radioed Laura and the Burrills about my predicament and the need to find a straight, flat and wide stretch of road, cause that right rear wheel’s gonna have to come off for a little roadside R&R.

Let me tell ya, there ain’t a whole lot of straight, flat and wide stretches of road on SR 555. By the time I did found one and pulled over, my right rear brake was SMOKING! Roger helped me get the car jacked up and the lug nuts loosened. Word of caution here, folks. After overheating your brakes, handle those lug nuts with caution; they’re HOT!

Now, a bit of a confession, this particular stuck caliper is not the first occurrence. It’s happened before. Without going into it, let’s just say that easy the cure (without a trunk full of tools and some caliper grease) is a BFH… you know, a “Big Freaking Hammer”. God Bless Roger – he had all sorts little itty-bitty wrenches and stuff, but no BFH. Next closest thing would be the OEM lug wrench bar thingy. A few good solid swings making contact loosened the stubborn e-brake mechanism and the calipers released and allowed normal brake operation. So, back on the road and everything working properly, but may have a couple thousand less miles on those RR brake pads! By the way, not wanting to tempt fate, Laura kept her Miata running, need I say more?

As we began nearing the town of Deaverton, location of the previous evening’s mishaps, we tried to determine the exact site where two cars had lost control. Descending a slight hill in a 40 MPH left hand sweeper that turns right into a 30 MPH curve, and into a canopy of trees, this made me think this just might

continued from Page 4... Tom's Marietta Novella be the location, especially since there was fresh dirt exposed on the hill on the west side of the road. We slowed to pass through Deaverton and as we were about to leave the town, there in the side yard of someone’s home, sat that totaled red Miata, its windshield flattened, its front end shoved all the way back to the tires. We stopped and got out to take pictures, and as we did, the neighbors came out of their homes to assess the reason why three Miatas where stopped in the middle of 555. Expecting a good tongue-thrashing from the locals, we were pleasantly surprised by their concern for the people that were driving the Miata and subsequent relief knowing no one was hurt, and their genuine friendliness. After a short conversation and an invitation to come back and drive their roads (and spend our money to bolster their economy), we were back on the road.

We arrived safely in Zanesville, for all practical purposes ending the fun, since the remainder of the nearly four hour drive would be on Interstate 70 West. Selecting the “top up/AC on” option for I-70, we all buttoned up our tops after topping off our tanks and heading west.

The “non-Event” was certainly anything but non-eventful. Lessons were learned, obstacles overcome, new friends were made and old friendships were strengthened. And these darn Miatas still never fail to put a smile on my face.

How many cars can you drive daily, drive it like a rental car on weekends, do roadside fixes with a BFH, and it still keeps giving and giving after 15+ years and over 178,000 miles? And SE Ohio is the place to go to fall in love all over again with your Miata. Take my word, it happens to me every time I go back.

Brickyard 400 MingleWhat a great evening for a night out in an air conditioned

neighborhood grill. The Indy Miata Club held their Mazda Brickyard 400 Mingle at George Neighborhood Grill. Twelve club members and one guest took part in a nice evening out with some really great food and conversation.

Many thanks go out to all members and guest who were in attendance; it is always great to have an evening out with Miata friends. Everyone enjoyed the fine dining and the really great conversation. After dinner, we returned to the parking lot for a nice evening of standing around looking at some fine looking cars and conversation among members and guest.

Also, a great big "Thank You" to Bob Wickware who stepped up to organize this mingle.
