Daresbury Test system
What is built at
DL currently
Collaboration meeting, Riverside 24th -27th March 2010
TH116 amplifier
Andrew Moss
•Connected to its test
load, tested water
flows, no leaks
anywhere inside
circuit or load
•Manufactured input
sliding short for input
tuning, tested
operation of grid and
anode tap moving
circuits, so far all this
looks good on network
analyser

116 HT tank
Andrew Moss
• ‘Test TH116’ triode in
amplifier HT tank
• Water connections
• HT connection visible,
water feed and return are
inside this connection
• PTFE insulators
• This part of the amplifier
is up at 40kV, arcing a
danger and large risk
Collaboration meeting, Riverside 24th -27th March 2010 Andrew Moss
Protection for the HT tank
• Installing arc detectors,
smoke alarm and camera to
monitor conditions inside
the HT tank remotely
• Any arcing will damage
silver plated components
and require a
stripdown/repair to be made,
this would take months to
fix and we must be careful
to avoid this, will gently run
the amplifier up and
understand how to operate it
Collaboration meeting, Riverside 24th -27th March 2010
HT power supply• Tested PLC controller that
monitors and interlocks all the
auxiliary power supplies with
cooling, door interlocks and
equipment protection systems
•Filament heater tested to full
power on the test triode
•Cathode bias unit tested to
operation levels
•System earthing assessed and
corrected to promote return
current path back through
monitor circuits

HT power supply
Andrew Moss
• Still left to do :-
– Some wiring control
wiring between amp and
HV rack/Aux rack
– Cathode modulator needs
building/testing
– Crowbar circuit needs
testing
– HV pressure test of
amplifier and HV
components
– Estimate 1 months effort
Collaboration meeting, Riverside 24th -27th March 2010
Schedule
•All four MICE 116 tubes
are on site at Daresbury
ready for experiment
•Plan to test assembled
amplifier then assemble a
CERN amplifier and test
•Build new power supplies
for 4616 and 116 sections
and move first set down for
install at RAL by end of
2010 if money allows
•RF testing of amplifiers
will receive sustained effort
for 2010 so that setup in
the mice hall can be more
easily achieved
Collaboration meeting, Riverside 24th -27th March 2010 Andrew Moss
RF Load
• Altronic Reaserch water
load, already tested to
3MW pulse
• Load
• Water cooling plant
• Much smaller than our
current test load which
would be a major positive
design change for the hall
installation
• Possibility to have one
cooling plant for multiple
waveguide loads - ideal
for MICE due to low
average power

Hall implementation
• Starting to work on hall plan in more detail
• Expect to be able to use 3D CAD drawings to be able to understand how to fit the RF equipment under the floor and to see how the system can be built up in installed sections
• Smaller load identified, need to look for phase shifters and hybrid devices next to reduce size of these items
• Nitrogen pressure will be used for whole waveguide system to raise voltage stand off and provide a ‘W/guide complete’ interlock

Conclusion
• Large amplifier ready for testing, connected to water,
test load and checked with network analyser as far as
possible
• Some work remains on the power supply, this will
continue as staff effort allows
• Hall design in progress and components being
identified that will be better for the installation, need
to progress to 3D CAD models as soon as possible
• Committed RF effort for this year to fully test
amplifier system
