matic Film. In spite of its great speed,Super. X does not show any increasein grain size. In 36- and 18-exposurelengths.

K o d a c h r o r n e F i l m K 1 3 5 o r K 1 3 5 A .For color film positives, use the K 135for daylight, and the K 135A forPhotoflood or Photoflash light. Bothin 1S-exposure lengths only. TheKodachrome Film must be returnedto an Eastman Kodak Laborator\zfor processing.

Load and unload your camera insubdued light, never in direct sun-light or in exceptionally strong artifi-cial light. The magazine should notbe allowed to remain unprotected inthe light ; any slight light-leak throughthe slot will fog the film.

Lift the lock I, page 2, and openthe back of the Kodak. Draw out thefilm rewind knob 7, page 5, as far as itwill come and insert the Kodak Maga-zine in the recess opposite the reel,with the end in which a crosspiece isseen, towards the rewind knob. Pushin the rewind knob as far as it will go.

Insert the end of the fi lm in a slot ofthe reel, see illustration . Do not attemptto remove tlt,e reel from th'e camera.

The lever 4,c o n t r o l l i n gthe clutch forw ind ing fo r -ward, must beat the letter"A." Turn thefilm windingknob 3, in thed i rec t ion o f

the arrow, to bind the film on the reeluntil the full width of film just emergesfrom the magazine. See illustration onpage 6 " Be sure that the film will ride

properly in the path provided for it.Should the film winding knob 3 belocked, push the lever release 5 to theopposite end of the slot. This releasewill automatically return to its original

position. Now close the back of thecamera and lock it.

number of exposures made. Immedi-ately after pushing the lever release 5,turn the film winding knob 3 until itlocks; this brings the next section offilm into position. Either 36 or 18 expo-sures can be made on the film in theKodak Magazine, see Pages 3 and 4.After every exposure, push the leverrelease 5 and turn the winding knob 3to bring the next section of film for-ward. Ttris prevents making two pic-tures on one section of film.

OPENING THE KODAK

Press the button 2, Page 2, anddraw down the bed 9 until it locks.

THE FINDER

The finder 8, page 5, shows what willappear in the picture, but on a muchreduced scale.

the finder is brought as close to the eyeas possible with the camera pressedfirmly against the face, see page 8. Allvertilal

-lines in the subject should

appea r parallel with the vertical linesof the front frame of the finder.

For vertical pictures the camera issimply turned end up.

Turn the film winding knob 3, page 5,in the direction of the arrow until itlocks. Push the lever release 5 to theother end of the slot, let it spring back,and again turn the winding knob untilit locks. Repeat this operat,ion Enoughfilm will now be wound on the take-upreel to avoid havirg the first exposureruined by fog. The lever release 5should now be moved, ?s often as itmay be necess &ry , to bring the indi-cator of counter 6 to the figure 1.The Kodak is now ready for the firstexposure.

After making the exposure, push thelever release 5, page 5 ; this automati-cally controls the exposure counterwhich gives an accurate check on the

FOCUSING THE KODAKTo focus the Kodak move the focus-

irg knob 12 until the figure represent-irg- the distance between the^subjectand camera comes to the focusing iit e!21,., see page 13. The focusing collaris engraved for the followirg distances:3 . 5 , 1 , 5 , 6 , 8 , 1 0 , 1 2 , 1 5 , 2 5 , a n d 5 0 f e e t ,and Inf . ( inf ini ty).

Before making a horizontal expo-sure, when using the focusing scalemarked in red, ti lt the Kodak a trif leto see if it is correctlv focused.

To be sure of obtaining sharplyfocused pictures, a Kodak PocketRange Finder is recommended, whichcan be attached tot h e t o p o f t h eKodak Retina bysliding the roundend of the RangeFinder between thetwo grooves of the

Look through the eyepiece of theRange Finder, holding the camera asshown in the i l lustration on page 12.Be careful to keep the fingers awayfrom the mirror.

Revolve the distance scale slowlv.looking at some vertical part of thesubject when holding the camera for avertical picture. The selected verticall ine rvil l appear broken. The part seen

in the upper area will be either to theright or left of the vertical line whichis seen in the lower area. (To includethese two areas, it may be necessaryto tilt the finder slightly.) If theupper line is seen to the right of thelower line, turn the distance scale tothe left until the line is unbroken.If the upper l ine is seen to the left ofthe lower line, turn the distance scaleto the right until the line is contin-uous. A oointer and scale can be seento the left of the subject focused on.The distance between the subiect and

The Range Finder can also be usedwith the camera held horizontally.When it is used in this position, focuson some horizontal l,ine in the subject.

When the line is continuous, takethe reading of the distance betweenRange Finderand subject, and focus theKodak for this distance. Then composethe picture in the sight finder 8, page 5,before making the exposure.

THE SHUTTER

The shutter is marked for exposuresof l second and I /2 , l /5 , I f l } , I /25 ,| / 50, I / 1o0, | / 250, and 1/500 second,as well as Time and "Bulb" Exposures.

1/50 and l/100. Intermediate expo-sures cannot be made between 1/100and 11250 or between l/250 and1/500 second.

Revolve the knurled collar G on thefront of the shutter until the figurerepresenting the time of exposure de-sired is at white pointer A, Page 13.

Before an exposure from 1 to 1/500second can be made, the shutter mustbe set by pressing the lever 13 towardsthe top of the shutter. The exposure isthen made by pressing the shutterrelease 14, page 2, or the release D,page 13. It is not advisable to changethe speed of the shutter from I/250 to1/500 or vice versa after the shutter hasbeen set. Time and "Bulb" Exposuresdo not require setting the shutter.

To make a Time Exposure, theletter "T" engraved on the shuttermust be at the white pointer A andthe shutter release 14 (or the release D)pressed twice, once to open the shutter,and again to close it.

For "Bulb" Exposures, the letter"8" engraved on the shutter must beat the white pointer A and the shutter

release 14, page 2, or the release D,page 13, pressed down; the shutterremains open as long as the release isheld down.

Automatic exposures of 1 second,l /2 , t /5 , or l l l0 second must not bemade with the camera held in thehands; a tripod or other firm suPPortmust be used for exposures slowerthan l/25 second.

STOP OPENINGS

Stop openings regulate the amountof light passing through the lens.These openings are enlarged or re-duced by moving the lever B, seepage 13. Lever B moves pointer C.

A knowledge of the comparativevalues of the stop openings is neces-sary for correctly timing exposures.

The stop openings are marked/.3.5,4 .5 , 5 .6 , 8 , 11 , and 16 .

The largest stop opening is /.3.5.This opening allows approximatelysixty per cent more light to enter thanf.4.5. and about two and a half t imesmore than / .5 .6. From J.5.6 to J . l6

each smaller opening (larger number)admits half the l ight of the precedinglarger stop opening. Thus, if thecorrect exposure is 1i 100 second atJ.5.6, then the exposure for /.3.5should be i1250 second; for / .8 , 1/50second ; for,f-.1i, 11/25 second ; and forJ . 16 , 1 / 1 0 second .

The exposure for the average out-door subject, when the sun is shining,is /.5.6 and 1/100 second. If the dayis hazy or slightly cloudy, use thelargest opening, that is, /.3.5 and1/100 second. I f the day is excep-tionally bri l l iant, use the next smallerstop to / .5 .6, that is , / .8 and 1, /100second. The imporlant thi,ng to remem-ber is the average exposure of f .5.6 and1/100 second. When the l ight condi-tions differ from the average, changethe aperture, keeping in mind thebasic exposure/ .5.6 and 1/100 second.See the exposure guide on the backcover. (For Kodachrome Film follou'the guide included with the fi lm.)

The smaller the stop opening thegreater is the range of sharpness.

DEPTH OF FIELD

Deoth of f ield is the distance fromthe nearest to the farthest objects thatrvill appear sharp in the negative orprint. It depends upon the distancebetween subject and lens, the focallength of the lens, and the size of thestop opening used; the smaller thestop opening the greater the range ofsnarpness.DEPTH OF FIELD INDICATOR

The Depth of Field Indicator, en-graved on the disk 17, page 2, is ahelp in obtaining correctly focusedoictures.-

Example 2: When the lens is focusedfor ten feet, turn theouter ring of the in-dicator until 10 is atthe pointer; we thenfind that with f .5 .6,objects as near as 8feet and as distant asabout 13 feet will be

When the subject is 3% feet fromthe camera, the dePth of field indi-cator shows the range of sharpness tothe rear only, with the various stopopenings.

With the Kodak focused at 3% feet,the range of sharpness when using

f .3 .5 is 3 feet 4 inches to 3 feet 9 inches ;with f .5 .6, the depth is 3 f eet 2 inchesto 3 feet 10 inches ; and at f . l l , therange is 3 feet to 4 feet 4 inches.

HOLD KODAK STEADYWhen making instantaneous expo-

sures or snapshots, hold the Kodakfirmly against the face, see page 8; andwhen pressing the shutter release 14,page 2, or the release D, p"ge 13, holdthe breath for the instant. If the Kodakis moved during the exposure, the pic-ture will be blurred

The Kodak should be held level if itis desired to have the vertical lines ofthe subject parallel with the sides ofthe picture. lJnusual effects can beobtained by tilting the Kodak.

CLOSING THE KODAKBefore closing the Kodak, f,rst

make sure 'it 'is f ocused f orinf,n'ity.The Kodak cannot be closed when theshutter is set. To close the Kodak,press the two buttons 16, P29e 2, andraise the bed 9.

REMOVING THE FILMAfter the thirty-sixth exposure has

been made (eighteenth exposure withan lS-exposure magazine), push thelever 4, page 5, controlling the clutch,to "R." The fi lm should now be re-

lmportant: Film should be devel-oped as soon as possible after expo-sure. The qual i ty of the image on-al l.;ensitized products is retained bvprompt developmeni a i ter "*poru.e.

it is a good plan to reload thecamera as soon as an exposed film hasbeen removed. to be ieady for thene\t plctures.

KODAK RETINA I FILTERS

There are four filters obtainable forthe Kodak Retina I for black-and-u'hite pictures: N-1 Light Yellow,N-2 Medium Yellow, N-3 Green, andN-4 Orange. These filters are screwedinto the inside flange of the lensmount. The factors for Kodak SuperSensitive Panchromatic, Kodak SuperX Panchromatic, and Kodak Pana-tomic Films are:

By a filter factor is meant the num-ber of times the exposure must beincreased when using a fi l ter.

The N-1 fi l ter is recommendedrvhen only a partial correction of colorvalues in a black-and-white negativeis desired; the N-2 filter gives a bettercolor correction; and the N-3, a fullcorrection with daylight. Write to theService Department, Eastman KodakCompany, Rochester, N. Y., for a

The N-4 filter should be used onlyfor cutting ha?e when making a dis-tant landscaoe.

Use the Xo. tZ Kodachrome Filterswith Kodachrome Film, see directionsincluded with the lilm.

TheNo.17 Kodak Skv Filter. Diffu-sion Portrait Attachment, and Pic-torial Diffusion Disk can be used withthe Kodak Retina I.

KODAK RETINA I PORTRAITATTACHMENTS A, B, AND C

While this Kodak can be focusedfor subjects as close as 3)4 feet, per-mitting the obtaining of head andshoulder portraits. it can be focusedfor much- closer distances when theKodak Retina I Portrait Attachmentsare used.

By using the Kodak Retina IPortrait Attachments, large images offlowers and similar "still life" subjectscan be obtained. For the best resultswhen making pictures of subjects atshort distances, it is advisable to usef .8 or a smaller opening.

Screw the Attachment into the lensmount. When making a horizontalpicture, center the subject in the fin4er;then tilt the camera tp sli'ghtly. Whenmaking a vertical exposure, the findershould not be used, as the short dis-tances at which the subject must befrom the shutter make it necessary tocenter the subject by eye instead ofbv the finder. This is done by sightingover the top of the camera, the eYebeing very close to the camera.

The subject must be at one of thedistances from the Kodak given inthe tables on pages 24 and 25, depend-ing upon which Attachment is used.Measure the distance carefuily fromthe shutter to the face, and turn thefocusing knob 12, page 13, unti l thecorrect figure is at the focusing line12A, page 13, according to the table.

The same exposure is required aswithout the Attachment.

The fronts of the Kodak Retina IPortrait Attachment Mounts arethreaded so that a color filter can bescrewed into the front of the Attach-ment.
