The new Michael Tippett School in Lambeth, South London, was built to provide a safe and comforting environment using an underfloor heating system, that is bright, breezy and contemporary, where children with special needs actually want to learn. The special needs school is the first to be completed under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, to which the government has pledged a staggering £45Bn on renovating and rebuilding schools in England and Wales. The school was developed in record time with the main contractor being onsite for just six months. Within this time Warmafloor installed approximately 4000 Sq M of underfloor heating, which consisted of Tacker insulation panel incorporating a fabric grid pattern to aid pipe spacing, a 20mm Polybutylene pipework (which is recyclable) was tacked into the floor insulation, with screed then covering the pipework to a 75mm depth. The whole underfloor heating system is served from a central plant room with just two boilers, with flow and return temperatures to the manifolds feeding the underfloor circuits running at just 50°C - 40°C respectively. There is clever interaction between the underfloor heating and natural ventilation system, if the form of an audible alarm. If windows are left open in winter, and the underfloor system does not get upto temperature quickly enough, the alarm sounds to tell people to shut the windows. The schools BMS system network has a web feature, so that heating could be controlled from any personal computer. Along with the underfloor heating system, other sustainable features include sedum roofing and a mini gas-fired heating plant. It is predicted that these technologies will save a predicted 13% on carbon emissions. The Michael Tippett school is also one of the first UK Schools to receive a BREEAM very good rating.
