WHAT IS SCAFF0LDING? Scaffolding is the support that
gets learners started on their reading tasks.
Scaffolding is explicit instruction and support that help students learn how to read and discuss academic texts.
Scaffolding is intentional platforming of instruction.
Scaffolding is a deliberate and temporary support.

WHAT DOES A STUDENT IN A SCAFFOLDED CLASSROOM LOOK LIKE?
Unscaffolded students exhibit:
confusion
disengagement
frustration
failure to submit work or read text
the behaviors of being an outsider
drop out because they feel unsupported in their learning
Scaffold students exhibit:
eagerness to share their discoveries
have the language to work towards being an insider
willingness to be code-breakers
confidence
engagement

HOW DOES IT WORK? Scaffolding is based on the idea
that student are untapped resources, so we do not have to over-teach text.
We model and share ways of reading to scaffold their own processes.
Literacy offers unique scaffolding opportunities.
Scaffolding can bridge learning gaps.

Thermal conductivity is attributed to the exchange of energy between adjacent
molecules and electrons in the conducting medium. The rate of heat flow in a rod of
material is proportional to the cross-sectional area of the rod and to the temperature
difference between the ends and inversely proportional to the length; that is the rate H equals the ratio of the cross section A of the
rod to its length l, multiplied by the temperature difference (T2 - T1) and by the
thermal conductivity of the material, designated by the constant k. This empirical relation is expressed as: H = - k(A/l)(T2 - T1).
The minus sign arises because heat flows always from higher to lower temperature.
SCAFFOLDING METACOGNITIVE CONVERSATIONSListen carefully and model:

Move out of the center of the conversations
Encourage participation by establishing shared responsibility in table groups
Offer time to reflect in another form: like a quick write, final word, popcorn ideas, etc.
Shift in role to listening, sharing, accepting, observing, facilitating, and encouraging.

MORE SCAFFOLDING IDEAS FOR FACULTY Provide a simplified version of a lesson, assignment, or reading, and then
gradually increases the complexity, difficulty, or sophistication over time
Give an example or model of an assignment
Jumpstart the vocabulary
Ensure the students know the purpose of a learning activity, the task they are being asked to do, and the learning goals they are expected to achieve.
Explicitly describe how the new lesson builds on the knowledge and skills students have previously mastered
