Michigan SCC - News from the Mitten
Dear SCCMI Colleagues and Friends, The summer is flying by, but I hope you’ve been able to enjoy it and take a little time for vacation. On Friday June 21st, 22 of us attended a family outing to a Midwest League Baseball game between the Great Lakes Loons and the West Michigan White-caps at Dow Diamond in Midland, MI and had a great time with fire-works following. Our SCCMI Seminar, Program, and House Committees continue planning for our full-day educational seminar on Wednesday, September 11th at the Amway Grand Hotel in Grand Rapids, MI. This “Molecular Biology of Skin” seminar features
an excellent group of speak-ers including Dr. Nava Dayan – Skin Science and Research Consultant; Dr. Philip Wertz from the University of Iowa; Dr. Philip Gies form Geis Microbiological Services; and Dr. Di Qu from Amway Cor-poration. There will also be a Social Reception from 6:30 - 8:00pm on Tuesday, Septem-ber 10th included with the registration so spread the word….you will not want to miss this!
Looking ahead, mark your calendars for Wednesday November 13th and our last SCCMI monthly meeting for 2013 which will be in East Lansing, MI. More details will follow, but this ground-breaking program will fea-ture presentations from fac-ulty members from the Michigan State University School of Packaging (the leading school of packaging in the country) as well as Am-way Corporation and provide us with a unique perspective on cosmetic packaging from the consumer as well as the a finished goods company such as Amway.
As you can see, there has been a lot of work done be-hind the scenes by these committee chairs and volun-teers so again I want to thank all of you for your commit-ment to making the SCCMI successful. You are the rea-son we will continue to be successful in the future! That being said, SCCMI elec-tions for 2014 will be coming soon and we are looking for candidates for Chair-Elect, Treasurer-Elect, and Secre-tary, so if you would be inter-ested in one of these, please contact me or a board mem-ber. Also in a few months, SCC National Elections will occur and you may see some familiar names on them….so look for these ballots and please be sure to vote. We look forward to seeing you on September 10-11th for the “Molecular Biology of the Skin” seminar and cocktail reception the night before!

News You Can Use: Resources for the Cosmetic Chemist We are starting a new column with this issue that will feature websites and other resources for cosmetic chemists that have been recommended by our members. At the suggestion of Haywood Ware from Amway, we want to call your attention to the Chemists Corner website:
http://chemistscorner.com. This site was created by Perry
Romanowski and the content is written by cosmetic chemists for cosmetic chemists. The site’s mission is to help visitors land a job in the cosmetic industry and become a better scientist once you get there. The website offers a wealth of content that includes industry news, technology reviews, innovation tips, and information for beginning formulators. Resources available from the site are training programs, podcasts, a cosmetic science forum, and links to other useful websites. Check it out!

Another useful website is ChemIDPlus that is provided by the National Library of Medicine:
http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/chemidheavy.jsp
This site provides information about chemical substances. It can be used to look up substances using their chemical abstracts service registry number (CAS number) or their name. Also, if you want to do a free literature search, try Google
Scholar: http://scholar.google.com. It works just like the
regular Google site, but searches the academic and patent literature.
