Provide quick answersTo help students who want more information simply attach files in the chat or channel when you type your message. Files are editable and automatically stored in the files tab.

Help students planAdd the Planner App (will soon be renamed Tasks) to give students a unified view of their tasks and assignments from across Microsoft To Do, Planner and Outlook, helping them consolidate and prioritise their work.

Keep students focused on what mattersUse the pin feature to fix lesson content or the ‘topic of the week’ in Team chats. It’s an easy way to guide student learning and remove distractions in class time.

Make references easy to findUpload your syllabus, course notes, essential web links and reference files to the Class Materials folder, where students can use search to find them easily.

SentralIncorporate this popular school management system to seamlessly manage administration and student data. Designed by teachers, it integrates with curricula, your administration, timetabling and student authentication. The parent app keeps them in touch with their child’s progress, and they can make payments and send texts.

LiveTilesThis company will onboard your staff and students to Microsoft Teams. They’ll also help you set up governance and secure collaboration, and teach your staff shortcuts for pinning chats, favouriting contacts, customising your video background and more expert tips.

Shoot a first-person video to encourage self-reflectionStudents are familiar with the format from Reality TV. Set a time limit (e.g. 60 seconds) and guidelines to suit the topic. A great way to summarise and communicate knowledge.

Use Minecraft as an assessment optionWhether it’s to demonstrate understanding of a maths concept or simulate a historical event, Minecraft is a powerful tool to engage students in assessment and encourage creative thinking.

Create a class WikiEncourage students to create a class Wiki on ‘Surviving year 7’ or a topic like ‘Understanding Algebra’. Every Teams channel comes with a Wiki where students can draft, edit and talk with teammates easily by @mentioning them, which notifies them in their activity feed.

Create a chatbot to help with revisionSimply add Power Virtual Agents in Teams. Students can create and maintain a chat bot by following a guided, no-code, graphical interface.

Co-author an infographic in realtimeAsk students to co-author flow charts, process diagrams decision-trees or information flow an app. Visio tabs in Teams allow them to work with tools and data, and have conversations about it as they do.

Flip your classroomTeam up with other teachers to create video tutorials that students can watch independently at their own pace. Post them in the channel and encourage students to ask questions in the chat to discuss as a group later.

Publish an interactive textbookAsk students to use Sway to create a chapter each, bringing in diagrams that they have built in programs like Paint3D.

Build a personal learning portfolioEncourage students to use a tab in OneNote to keep their best work and encourage them to embed an audio commentary with their reflections about it.

More ways to inspire learningSet higher expectations for hybrid learning! Use the powerful new apps in Teams to engage and extend learners as they develop future-ready skills.

Teams is an extensible platform that integrates with many applications. For example:

GO1 appThis is a great way to find, use, share and discuss learning resources from within Teams. Go1 lets you import your own learning resources from SCORM, AICC, LTI, Tin Can and xAPi or choose from more than 100,000 courses to help you in your teaching practice. Once Go1 is installed, add a tab at the top of staff or curriculum Team channels for easy access.

ClickViewVideo learning doesn’t have to be passive – ClickView lessons created for Australian curricula embed built-in questions and problems to promote higher order thinking and engage students more deeply. Simply add educational videos from ClickView as a tab in a Teams channel to collaborate and share knowledge in classroom sessions.

Let’s chat!Encourage students to ask questions in the chat window as you teach. Students who don’t speak up in class can be more confident to comment, especially certain learning styles and neuroatypical students. Allow students to ask questions privately.

Brainstorm ideas on the whiteboardThe pop-up whiteboard in Teams is perfect for creative brainstorming and sketching. Call for ideas and ask students to contribute on sticky notes. They can move and re-order objects through a simple drag and drop gesture.

Quiz rouletteCreate teams or virtual tables. During the morning video call, award team points for the first three correct answers to a question that you randomly post in the chat window. Have four or five prepared questions on the topic and post them at intervals to keep students alert and engaged.

Co-author in groups or pairs in realtimeBreak students into virtual tables and set them collaborative tasks, such as co-authoring in Word, PowerPoint or a shared Excel Spreadsheet to encourage teamwork, discussion and engagement.

Set up study buddiesCombat anxiety by asking students to check in daily with a nominated ‘study buddy’ on chat. Set up a Fun Things channel for sharing photos and videos and celebrating birthdays. Encourage students to engage with the class by writing, liking and commenting on posts.

Monitor the moodIt’s lonely not seeing your friends. Start a Teams video with a check-in that students respond to with emojis. Or try the Reflect messaging polls that are designed to support social-emotional wellbeing – so you can focus on helping any who are struggling.

Include parentsParents are key to hybrid learning success. OneNote Class Notebooks have a parent/guardian link where they can keep up with their student’s work. Class Teams also offers a weekly parent/guardian email option, which provides a concise summary of assignments, categorised by subject or class, and highlights the status of each assignment (turned in/not turned in).

Create individualised education plansForms in OneNote lets you rapidly personalise learning experiences for students with learning differences. Tailor each student’s format with pictures, answer choices, fill-in-the-blank statements and more. Response data is sent to an Excel worksheet so you can monitor progress and plan future learning.

Make reading easierImmersive Reader lets students with reading difficulties or dyslexia choose how they want to read Teams posts, chats, content and OneNote notebooks by changing fonts, colour and contrast, having texts read aloud, splitting words into syllables and much more.

Give everyone a voiceVision- or mobility-impaired students or those with dyslexia or dysgraphia can use their voices to ‘type’ assignments with speech recognition. They can also ask digital assistant Cortana to set reminders, open apps, find facts, send emails and texts and more.

Talk everyone’s languageAutomatically subtitle your live PowerPoint lessons in more than 70 languages and generate a transcript for students to review later. Microsoft Translator is great for non-native speakers, hearing impaired and dyslexic students.

Picture this!Increase comprehension by turning the Picture Dictionary toggle in Reading Preferences in Immersive Reader in Microsoft Edge. When students select a word on a web page it provides a picture representation of it.

Lessons for allOne in five Australian school students is considered to have a learning disability. The ‘check accessibility’ button in Office 365 lets you confirm your lessons are accessible for students with vision, hearing and learning differences. Ask students to verify their work too.

Expand everyone’s potentialHybrid learning should not disadvantage diverse learners. Here’s how to include everyone.

Closed caption your video classesSwitch on live closed captioning for video lessons if students need extra help to follow along, have a poor internet or are hearing impaired. Record your live lessons and share them in the Teams channel or class materials folder for those who missed the class or wish to revisit it.

Read it to meStudents can ask for texts, worksheets and documents to be read aloud within Word and OneNote Online, no matter the browser. Immersive Reader in Microsoft Edge reads all text from any website, PDF or ePub file.

Make sure everyone’s flourishingUse Class Insights to see what your students are working on and when at-a-glance. Track when students turn in work. Click to compare a student’s grade against the class average and intervene early to keep them on track.

Provide formative assessmentWhen you set your assignments in Teams you have complete visibility of student work – the technology equivalent of looking over students’ shoulders. You can give feedback in many forms, before or after the assignment due date, putting formative assessment at your fingertips.

Provide consistent gradesTeams Assignments have built-in rubrics that you can share with other teachers. Rubric grading increases accountability for students and allows you to give more meaningful feedback to students, while providing consistent and transparent way for teachers to grade. And anonymous grading can help you avoid bias by hiding students’ names while you mark.

Support and understand studentsIt’s essential to praise, monitor, assess and provide meaningful feedback to students, even when you can’t do so in person. Here’s how.

How much do you already know?Gauge students understanding of concepts or topics you’re about to cover by starting with a true-false diagnostic quiz built in Microsoft Forms. Create pop-up quizzes for a snapshot of understanding as you go.

App Spotlight

Curb plagiarismMake sure student work is their own with automatic plagiarism checks. When setting assignments in Teams, activate ‘Turnitin’ – requires a subscription. On download, students are warned their work will be checked. Similarity scores show how closely they match outside sources.

JanisonJanison’s platform lets teachers create engaging and responsive assessments. Create self-marking tests in as little as 30 minutes. Use rich media assessment capabilities and measure understanding with adaptive or branching tests. Target learning precisely with analytics showing where student knowledge is weakest. Deliver assessments, anywhere, across multiple devices.

Antares‘Question Bot’ aka ‘QBot’, is a world-first, AI-infused chatbot that answers queries. It is a community learning application that helps humans interact. QBot uses machine learning and AI to build a body of knowledge that teachers or students can tap for 24/7 support.Check understanding

Try embedding Forms in videos hosted in Stream to measure understanding as content plays. Use branching to pinpoint any concepts students are struggling with and differentiate learning for them.

Contextual feedbackProvide feedback in context by placing notes, audio or video commentary directly on the aspect of student work you want to praise or assist with. This makes feedback more immediate and helpful.
