The Office of Information Technology would like to provide all end-users with a reference guide to
quickly show several changes between Microsoft Office 2011 and Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac users.
Students, Faculty, and Staff will continue to enjoy the latest technology upgrades along with many new
features that will allow all users to work more effectively and efficiently.
This Quick Reference will guide you from the old Microsoft Office 2011, through the new and improve
Microsoft Office 2016.
To see what’s new on Microsoft, click on ‘Get started’ to view all the new features and functions this
new app has to offer our end-users.
Word 2011 Vs. Word 2016
The Home Tab You can see similarities between the Home tabs in Word 2010 and Word 2016. Please note that some
features such as Format Painter, Cut, Copy, and Paste were added. Text Box, Shape, Pictures, and
Themes selection were moved to other tabs.

Insert Tab New Insert Tab, where you will be able to select a cover page for your documents, insert pictures,
shapes, smartArt, charts, header, footer, and page number among other new features.
Design The Design tab, you can select the Themes of your choice, custom watermark, Page Color and Page
Borders.
Layout Please note, that Watermark, Color, and Borders options are now located in the Design Tab. Gridlines,
Snap Objects to Others, and Snap Objects to Grid can be found on the new View Tab. (see p. 5)

Reference Under this tab, you will see some changes in the icons. Also Header, Footer, and Page # were removed
from the Reference tab. You can now find those features in the ‘Insert Tab’.

Mailings Mailings is another new tab added to Microsoft Word 2016, where you can create envelopes, labels,
start Mail Merge and select your recipients.
Review Now you can check your Spelling & Grammar, Word Count, select Language, Compare, and continue to
Protect your Document.

View Ruler, Gridlines, and Navigation Pane are part of the new View Pane.

The Home Tab You may be familiar with the Home tab in Word 2010 and Word 2016. Please note that some features
such as the Copy, Paste, Copy, and Paste were added. Text Box, Shape, Pictures, and Themes selection
were moved to other tabs.

Review The Thesaurus was added to the Review tab to help you with any suggestions of words. Please note that
you will find the same features but in a different style in icons.

View This is another new tab added to Excel 2016 version. Here, you will find features such as, Page Layout,
Custom Views, Freeze Panes, Freeze Top Row, Freeze First Column, among others.

PowerPoint 2011 Vs. PowerPoint 2016
The Home Tab You may be familiar with the Home tab in PowerPoint 2011 and PowerPoint 2016. One of the difference
in this tab is the interface. Feature such as, Format, Cut, Copy, Paste, Reset, and Convert to SmatArt
were added. Note, that Slide Show Play was remove from this tab and can now be found in the ‘Slide
Show’ tab.

Insert New Insert Tab, where you will be able to insert pictures, shapes, smartArt, charts, header, footer, and
slide number among other new option that will help you create the perfect presentation.
Design The Design tab, also new, you can select the Themes of your choice for your presentation, Format
Background, and select the Slide Size.
Transition You ‘Transitions’ tab looks similar, but now you will enjoy new transitions design that was added to the
collection of the new PowerPoint 2016.

Review Spell Check and the Thesaurus was added on the Review tab. The following features were removed:
Compare, Accept, Reject, Edit, and Share Mail.

View New tab added to PowerPoint 2016 for Mac. Here, you will find features such as, Outline View, Slide
Sorter, Note Page, among other useful tools to help you create the perfect document.
Outlook 2011 Vs. Outlook 2016
The Home Tab You may be familiar with the Home tab in Word 2010 and Word 2016. The only difference in this tab is
the design, and the ‘Categorize’ option was removed.

Organize Continue organizing your messages like in Outlook 2011. With the new ‘Message Preview’ feature, you
can scan items in preview mode.

Tools Add additional accounts to your new 2016 Outlook with the ‘Accounts’ feature. View your ‘Sync Status’
and also view your ‘Sync Errors’. You can continue importing information to your Outlook, by using the
‘Import’ option. (The ‘Export’ option was removed)
