Delete two of the three alternatives given, to find the correct plot. Beware possible misconceptions and muddles.

Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, is reported to have fought bravely against the King of Norway, and is awarded the title of the treacherous Cawdor. Returning with Banquo, he is hailed by three witches under his new title - and also as “king hereafter”: his companion is told that Banquo’s heirs will also be kings. The present King Duncan invites himself to Macbeth’s castle – already called a “fatal entrance” by Lady Macbeth. Macbeth wrestles between conscience and ambition, but is spurred to action by Lady Macbeth's challenges. They will use the daggers of Duncan's chamberlains for the deed.

Lady Macbeth : she is rarely associated with mirth and order in theBanquo’s ghost appears, and sits in Macbeth's place at the feast. No-one play 3, 4else can see the ghost: Lady Macbeth passes off her husband’s wildbehaviour as a fit. The witches' mistress Hecate plots further. Meanwhile, the Lords call Macbeth “tyrant”. Macduff is “in disgrace” and has gone to England. War is in the air.

Who? What? Why? When? Where? How?

Trust and Loyalty

1. The armed head: could be neutral, or Macduff - or Macbeth's own end.The bloody child. Encourages false security: Macduff is in fact not of woman born. The bloody child may even be a hint of this- though Macbeth takes it as a reminder to kill more children! The child crowned, with tree.
