Unique in many ways and so very Munich-like

The Hi-Sky Ferris wheel, Munich's new attraction, celebrates its maiden ride, and is in many ways a truly special experience.

Germany's largest Ferris wheel, recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as being the world's biggest transportable Ferris wheel, higher than the towers of Munich's Frauenkirche, e-mobility in its purest form, and with high-tech in every spoke. Hi-Sky Mnchen is in many respects unique, ingenious and multi-faceted and therefore already so very much one of "Munich's children". The new attraction celebrates its maiden ride at the weekend, and from 14 April onwards will be offering unforgettable experiences 365 days a year. "Say hi to the sky" is now the name of the game in the Werksviertel-Mitte district, directly opposite the Ostbahnhof station, when slowly taking off into the sky above Bavaria's metropolis. And even with a cocktail in the hand, while taking a traditional veal sausage breakfast, or on an inspiring workshop. And there is even a special discount for residents of Munich.

No other Ferris wheel anywhere else in Germany lets passengers float so high up in the sky like the Hi-Sky Mnchen. Reaching a height of almost 80 metres, you travel at a speed of less than one kilometre per hour. A regular ride takes about 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to enjoy to the full the breathtaking views over all of Munich on one side, and over towards the Alps on the other.

At the ride's zenith, you even climb higher than the towers of Munich's Frauenkirche church. Although these are a good 90 metres higher than the Hi-Sky, its location above the city centre gives the Ferris wheel a decisive advantage.

The R80 XL Ferris Wheel, the creation of Dutch designer Ronald A. Bussink and manufactured by Munich-based steel construction company MAURER SE, owes its entry in the Guinness Book of Records to its mobile attributes. It is not firmly anchored to the ground, but stands stable in all weathers thanks to its inherent weight of around 1,500 tonnes. This mobility will also benefit the Hi-Sky Mnchen when it is moved to the envisaged successor location. For the next two years, it will stand on the site in the Werksviertel-Mitte district of Munich where the Bavarian Radio concert hall will eventually stand. "For us, however, this does not mean that we will then strike camp in Munich," says Arantxa Drri, Managing Director of the operating company, Hi-Sky Consulting GmbH, Munich, which is part of the Motorworld Group. "Our Hi-Sky should find a permanent place in Munich and become a distinctive part of the city skyline. And so we hope all the more that the people of Munich will become true fans of our Ferris wheel."

Truly special and diverse experiences

Special discounts are available to residents of the Bavarian state capital upon presentation of their identity card. For example, a 30-minute ride on the Hi-Sky will only cost you EUR 12.50 instead of the regular price of EUR 14.50. Rides with the Ferris wheel that are enriched with special experiences are also planned for the local people as regular special offers. It goes without saying that visitors from all over the world are also warmly welcome at Hi-Sky. The 25-strong Hi-Sky team is well prepared for them on the language front as well.

"Eight nationalities are represented in our team who are able to answer visitors' questions in ten languages," says Drri, who is delighted to have assembled such a diverse crew.

The Hi-Sky Mnchen concept focuses on rides that are enriched by special experiences. Passengers can therefore book packages offering special moments right from the first public ride at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2019. Supported by the exclusive local caterers Minga Event, they can choose the package "Hi-Sky mit Schuss" ("Hi-Sky with a shot"), for example, on which guests set off on their ride with a glass of champagne or a cocktail in their hand (price per package for 1 person, 30 minutes: EUR 21.50 (regular) or EUR 19.50 for Munich residents) for a pleasant tingling sensation during the ride. Other culinary delights can be booked from May 1, such as the "Hi-Sky Minga" and "Hi-Sky Monaco" rides, which include a richly filled picnic basket with either Bavarian or Italian specialities (price per package for 2 persons, 60 minutes: EUR 180). A veal sausage breakfast, the "Hi-Sky Blau Weiss" (price per package for 6 persons, 60 minutes: EUR 360) is certain to become a popular choice. From May 1, anyone who wants to learn more about the city during the ride can book the "Hi-Sky Guided" package, and be accompanied in the gondola by a city guide, who will tell passengers everything they want to know about Munich (price per person, 30 minutes: EUR 19.50, Munich residents EUR 17.50). And those wanting to take home a special memento of their Hi-Sky ride should not pass up on the IMANOX mixed-reality photo box and Hi-Sky Mnchen's merchandise shop. Among other things, a model kit of the Hi-Sky or a snack board with the Ferris wheel skyline can be found here.

Electromobility and high-tech

Just one glance at the Hi-Sky Mnchen is enough to see that this Ferris wheel is something special from a technological point of view.

In cooperation with Bayernwerk Natur und Werkkraft, it is run with 100% green electricity. Electrical power is also recovered with every ride. The Ferris wheel, which is packed with state-of-the-art technology, can be controlled fully automatically and operates with more than 1,000 IP addresses. These allow all the functions in each of the 27 gondolas, such as the air conditioning, lighting and sound, to be individually controlled. A maximum of 16 people per gondola can enjoy practically uninterrupted views over Munich thanks to the all-round glazing.

The Hi-Sky Mnchen will be doing its rounds on every day of the year between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., and on certain days even through until midnight. Ride tickets and some of the packages are available online or at the local ticket offices; special packages have to be booked in advance.
