Activities Play with whatever mediums you wish –pencil, charcoal, watercolors, pencil, crayons, markers, pastel, collage etc.1) Draw your room, playing close attention to perspective. You could even try laying down, and drawing it from that perspective
2) Draw your pet, or your favorite animal
3) Draw a new CD cover for your favorite band. Pay close attention to text and layout –make it professional looking, and graphic.
4) Draw an object with a mirror behind it
5) Draw the view from a window –either looking in, or looking out
6) Cut out part of a magazine image in the middle of the page, and extend the image into a drawing
7) Create a mini pointillism drawing, using only dots. Don’t make it bigger than Ɖ of the page, draw a boarder, and use an inky pen.
8) Pick one powerful emotion that you’ve only experienced a few times in your life. Re-create this emotion in art
9) Place a blanket over an object. Allow a portion of the object to peek out, to give a clue as to what is being hidden. Draw what you see and use value to shade the folds.
10) Record a dream that you had, and re-create that in a drawing
11) Create an abstract drawing, by zooming in on part of a magazine ad, or a photograph
12) Draw your favorite movie poster, or your favorite painting
13) Draw your 3 favorite foods, put together in one fantastic meal
14) Create a comic book page spread, using text boxes and your own cartoons
15) Create a monster, and draw it –put in as many details as possible, to bring it to life on the page
16) Divide your page into 10 sections, and create 10 patterns in each one—play with organic and geometric shapes
17) Create a logo for a product using your name
18) Draw an object from 3 different views on the same page
19) Show someone how to do something (like making a paper airplane) in a sequence o drawn pictures – few words as possible
20) Draw the images you see when listening to your favorite song
21) Create a collage –cut out images from magazines, and glue them on a page to create 1 crazy, unreal, scene –consider a foreground, middle ground, and background
21) Divide a page into 8 parts, and draw the following emotions using ONLY lines = excited, nervous, relaxed, rigid, graceful, awkward, angry, shy (LABEL each one as you draw it)
22) Six Texture Squares – create the illusion of the following textures with pencil crayon fur, a fruit, something metallic, smoke, grass, clouds (each square should be a 3X6 inch box)
23) Create your own Colour Charts – Draw and shade 3 value charts for colours, and give them your own designer name that reflects the colour
DevelopmentThis is YOUR sketchbook, so it should reflect YOU.
Start to take your sketchbook with you places, and draw as much as you can.
Doodles, poems, quotes, lyrics, found images, stickers, personal and found photographs…everything that COULD inspire you somehow, should be put in.
Think of it like a collection of ideas. It’s an ongoing process – not just about finished works of art.
Remember to date your drawings (in pencil) as you will be evaluated throughout the semester (ongoing).
Evaluation will be based on a variety of different drawings demonstrating your on-going process and personal investigation.
