REMOVING AND REPLACING THE MICROWAVE OVEN

If you need to remove your Microwave Hood Combi-nation for any reason, follow these simple steps:

To remove:1. Unplug microwave oven or disconnect power.2. Remove filters and vent grille.

• If filters areinstalled, push in at thetab and slide filter to theoutside edge to remove.• Remove the twoscrews from the topof the microwave ovencabinet (the screwslocated closest to thefront corners). Do notremove the screws

located towards the center of the cabinet.

•Remove the vent grille . Set the screws andgrille aside.

3. After removing all oven contents, including theturntable and support,tape the door in theclosed position. Thenremove the two bolts

securing themicrowave oven to theupper cabinet.

4. While wearing gloves, grasp the microwave ovensupports and firmlypull the microwave ovenforward and downward torelease the microwaveoven cabinet from themounting plate lockingpins .

5. Grasp the microwave oven cabinet. Rotate themicrowave oven down-ward. (Be careful thatdoor does not swingopen.) Lift off the supporttabs at the bottom ofthe mounting plate. Setthe microwave ovenaside on a protectedsurface.

To replace:1. Carefully lift microwave oven and hang it on the

support tabs at the bottom of the mounting plate.2. Rotate the front of the microwave oven cabinet

downward. Thread the power supply cordthrough the power supply cord hole in thebottom of the upper cabinet.

3. Rotate the microwave oven towards the cabinet.Push the microwave oven against the mountingplate until locking pins snap into the cabinet.

4. Replace the two bolts securing the microwaveoven to the uppercabinet.

5. Untape the door and replace the turntable andsupport.

8. If filters were installed, replace them (see “Install-ing and caring for the filters” in the “Caring forYour Microwave Oven” section, if needed).

Microwave ovens are safe. Microwave energy isnot hot. It causes food to make its own heat, andit’s this heat that cooks the food.

Microwaves are like TV waves or light waves. Youcannot see them, but you can see what they do.

A magnetron in the microwave oven producesmicrowaves. The microwaves move into the ovenwhere they contact food as it turns on the turntable.

HOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN WORKS

The glass turntable of your microwave oven letsmicrowaves pass through. Then they bounce off ametal floor, back through the glass turntable, andare absorbed by the food.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVENThis section discusses the concepts behind microwave cooking. It also shows you the basicsyou need to know to operate your microwave oven. Please read this information before you useyour microwave oven.

Microwaves pass through most glass, paper, andplastics without heatingthem so food absorbsthe energy. Microwavesbounce off metal con-tainers so food doesnot absorb the energy.

Microwaves may not reach the center of a roast.The heat spreads tothe center from theouter, cooked areasjust as in regular ovencooking. This is oneof the reasons forletting some foods(for example, roastsor baked potatoes)stand for a while aftercooking, or for stirring

some foods during the cooking time.The microwaves disturb water molecules in the

food. As the molecules bounce around bumpinginto each other, heat is made, like rubbingyour hands together. This is the heat that doesthe cooking.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN

NOTE: Do not deep fry in the oven. Microwavablecookware is not suitable and it is difficult tomaintain appropriate deep-frying temperatures.

Using your microwave oven may cause interferenceto your radio, TV, or similar equipment. When thereis interference, you can reduce it or remove it by:

•Cleaning the door and sealing surfaces ofthe oven.

•Adjusting the receiving antenna of the radioor television.

HOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN WORKS (CONT.)

To test the oven put about 1 cup of cold water in aglass container in the oven. Close thedoor and make sure it latches. Followthe directions in “Cooking at highcook power” in the “Using YourMicrowave Oven” section to set the

oven to cook for 2 minutes. When the time is up,the water should be heated.

TESTING YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN

•Moving the radio or TV away from the microwaveoven.

•Plugging the microwave oven into a differentoutlet so that the microwave oven and radio or TVare on different branch circuits.

RADIO INTERFERENCE

For the best cooking results

•Always cook food for the shortest cookingtime recommended. Check to see howthe food is cooking. If needed, touchADD MINUTE while the oven is operatingor after the cooking cycle is over (see the“Using ADD MINUTE” section).

•To help make sure the food is evenlycooked, stir, turn over, or rearrange thefood about halfway through the cookingtime.

• If you do not have a cover for a dish, usewax paper, or microwave-approved papertowels or plastic wrap. Remember to turnback a corner of the plastic wrap 1⁄4 to 1⁄2inch (6 mm to 1.2 cm) to vent steam duringheating or cooking.

OPERATING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

TESTING YOUR DINNERWARE OR COOKWARETest dinnerware or cookware before using.

To test a dish for safeuse, put it into the ovenwith a cup of waterbeside it. Cook at 100%cook power for 1 minute.If the dish gets hot andwater stays cool, donot use it.

Never cook or reheat a whole egg inside theshell. Steam buildupin whole eggs maycause them to burstand burn you, andpossibly damage theoven. Slice hard-boiledeggs before heating.In rare cases, poachedeggs have been knownto explode. Coverpoached eggs and

allow a standing time of 1 minute before cuttinginto them.

For best results, stir any liquid several timesduring heating orreheating. Liquidsheated in certaincontainers (especiallycontainers shaped likecylinders) may becomeoverheated. The liquidmay splash out with aloud noise during orafter heating or whenadding ingredients

(coffee granules, tea bags, etc.). This can harmthe oven and possibly injure someone.

Never lean on the door or allow a child to swing on itwhen the door is open.Injury could result.

Use hot pads. Microwave energy does not heatcontainers, but the heatfrom the food can makethe container hot.␣


Some dishes (melamine, some ceramic dinnerware,etc.) absorb microwave energy, becoming too hot tohandle and slowing cooking times. Cooking in metalcontainers not designed for microwave use coulddamage the oven, as could containers with hiddenmetal (twist-ties, foil lining, staples, metallic glazeor trim).

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION


Do not overcook potatoes. Fire could result. Atthe end of the recom-mended cooking time,potatoes should beslightly firm becausethey will continue cook-ing during standingtime. After micro-waving, let potatoesstand for 5 minutes.They will finish cookingwhile standing.

Do not start a microwave oven when it is empty.Product life may beshortened.

If you practiceprogramming the oven,put a container ofwater in the oven oruse the Demo/learningfeature (see “Using thedemo/learning feature”later in this section).

It is normal for theoven door to look wavy after the oven has beenrunning for a while.

Do not use newspaper or other printed paper in theoven. Fire could result.

Do not dry flowers,fruit, herbs, wood,paper, gourds, orclothes in the oven.Fire could result.

OPERATING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS (CONT.)Do not try to melt paraffin wax in the oven. Paraffin

wax will not melt in amicrowave oven becauseit allows microwaves topass through it.

Do not operate the microwave oven unless theglass turntable issecurely in place andcan rotate freely on thesupport rollers. Theturntable can rotate ineither direction.

Make sure the rollersare completely insidethe center circle of theturntable; this will let theturntable rotate properly.

Make sure the turntable is correct-side up in theoven. Carefully place the cookware on yourturntable to avoid possibly breaking it.

Handle your turntable with care when removingit from the oven to avoid possibly breaking it. If yourturntable cracks or breaks, contact your dealer fora replacement.

When you use a browning dish, the browningdish bottom must be at least 3⁄16 inch (5 mm) abovethe turntable. Follow the directions supplied with thebrowning dish.

If your electric power line or outlet voltage isless than 110 volts,cooking times may belonger. Have a qualifiedelectrician check yourelectrical system.

Your microwave oven is designed to make yourcooking experience as enjoyable and productive aspossible. To help get you up and running quickly,the following is a list of the oven’s basic features:1. Door Handle. Pull to open door.2. Door Safety Lock System. The oven will not

operate unless the door is securely closed.3. Window with Metal Shield. Shield prevents

microwaves from escaping. It is designed as ascreen to allow you to view food as it cooks.

4. Cooking Rack. Use for extra space whencooking in more than one container at the sametime. See page 16 for more information.

5. Glass Turntable (PN 4393751) (not shown).Included in oven cavity – see below for installa-tion instructions. This turntable turns food as itcooks for more even cooking. It must be in theoven during operation for best cooking results.The turntable is sunken into the cavity floor togive you more cooking space and better cookingresults. To install turntable and support:•Fit the hub (PN 4393754) onto the shaft.

• Place the support(PN 4393752) on thecavity bottom.• Place the turntableon the hub. Make surethe raised, curved linesin the center of theturntable bottom arebetween the three“spokes” of the hub.

•The rollers (PN 4393753) on the support should fitinside the ridge on the bottom of the turntable.

•The turntable turns both clockwise and counter-clockwise. This is normal.

Heating more than one plate of foodWhen heating plates of food with a cook time that

Do not allow grease and soil to build up in thegrease filters. It will decrease the exhaust fanefficiency and could cause a fire. Remove andclean grease filters at least once a month.

NOTE: Your microwave hood combination comeswith a charcoal filter to provide clean recirculatedair. The charcoal filter cannot be cleaned andshould be replaced every 6 to 12 months. Youcan order replacements (PN 4393690) in the U.S.A.by calling 1-800-253-1301, or in Canada by callingthe nearest service branch (see “If you need assis-tance or service in Canada” in the “RequestingAssistance or Service” section). Follow the instruc-tions and telephone prompts you hear.

Removing, cleaning, and replacing1. Unplug microwave oven or disconnect power.2. To remove the grease filters (PN 4393691), push

each filter up on the sideopposite the tab. Graspthe tab and slide thefilter to the side. Pull thefilter downward. It willdrop out.

3. To remove the charcoal filters, push the backof each filter away fromyou. This will slide thefront of the filter off thelower lip. Swing thefront of the filter downand slide the filter out.

4. Soak grease filters in hot water and a milddetergent. Scrub andswish to removeembedded dirt andgrease. Rinse welland shake to dry. Do not use ammonia,corrosive cleaningagents such aslye-based ovencleaners, or placein a dishwasher. The

filter will turn black or could be damaged.

5. To replace the charcoal filters, push each filterto the back of theopening, between theupper and lower lipsagainst the springs.Swing the front of thefilter up against theupper lip. Slide the filterforward while pushing itup against the upperlip. The filter will now beheld in position be-tween the lips by thespring.

6. To replace the grease filters, slide each filterinto the outer side ofthe filter opening. Makesure you are sliding inthe side of the filter thatdoes not have the tab.Hold the tab with yourother hand. Push up thetab side of the filter andslide the filter to the otherside of the opening tolock into place.


NOTE: Do not operate the vent fan without the filtersin place.

You can use any covering that lets microwaves passthrough.

Releasing pressure in foods•Several foods (for example: baked potatoes,

sausages, egg yolks, and some fruits) are tightlycovered by a skin or membrane. Steam can buildup under the membrane during cooking, causingthe food to burst. To relieve the pressure and toprevent bursting, pierce these foods beforecooking with a fork, cocktail pick, or toothpick.

Using standing time•Always allow food to stand after cooking. Stand-

ing time after defrosting and cooking allows thetemperature to evenly spread throughout the food,improving the cooking results.

•The length of the standing time depends onhow much food you are cooking and how denseit is. Sometimes it can be as short as the time ittakes you to remove the food from the oven andtake it to the serving table. However, with larger,denser food, the standing time may be as longas 10 minutes.

Amount of food• If you increase or decrease the amount of food

you prepare, the time it takes to cook that foodwill also change. For example, if you double arecipe, add a little more than half the originalcooking time. Check for doneness and, ifnecessary, add more time in small increments.

Starting temperature of food•The lower the temperature of the food being

put into the microwave oven, the longer it takesto cook. Food at room temperature will be re-heated more quickly than food at refrigeratortemperature.

Composition of food•Food with a lot of fat and sugar will be heated

faster than food containing a lot of water. Fat andsugar will also reach a higher temperature thanwater in the cooking process.

•The more dense the food, the longer it takesto heat. “Very dense” food like meat takes longerto reheat than lighter, more porous food likesponge cakes.

Size and shape•Smaller pieces of food will cook faster than

larger pieces. Also, same-shaped pieces cookmore evenly than different-shaped pieces.

•With foods that have different thicknesses,the thinner parts will cook faster than the thickerparts. Place the thinner parts of chicken wingsand legs in the center of the dish.

Stirring, turning foods•Stirring and turning foods spreads heat quickly

to the center of the dish and avoids overcookingat the outer edges of the food.

MICROWAVE COOKING TIPS (CONT.)If you use aluminum containers without packageinstructions, follow these guidelines:

•Place the container in a glass bowl and add somewater so that it covers the bottom of the container,not more than 1⁄4 inch (6 mm) high. This ensureseven heating of the container bottom.

•Always remove the lid to avoid damage tothe oven.

•Use only undamaged containers.

•Do not use containers taller than 3⁄4 inch (19 mm).

•Container must be at least half filled.

•To avoid arcing, there must be a minimum1⁄4 inch (6 mm) between the aluminum containerand the walls of the oven and also between twoaluminum containers.

•Always place the container on the turntable.

•Reheating food in aluminum foil containers usuallytakes up to double the time compared to reheatingin plastic, glass, china, or paper containers. Thetime when food is ready will vary depending uponthe type of container you use.

•Let food stand for 2 to 3 minutes after heating sothat heat is spread evenly throughout container.

Cooking you should not do in yourmicrowave oven•Do not do canning of foods in the oven. Closed

glass jars may explode, resulting in damage tothe oven or possible personal injury.

•Do not use the microwave oven to sterilize objects(baby bottles, etc.). It is difficult to keep the oven atthe high temperature needed for safe sterilization.

Arranging foodFor best results, place food evenly on the plate.You can do this in several ways:

• If you are cooking several items of the samefood, such as baked potatoes, place them in aring pattern for uniform cooking.

•When cooking foods of uneven shapes orthickness, such as chicken breasts, place thesmaller or thinner area of the food towards thecenter of the dish where it will be heated last.

•Layer thin slices of meat on top of each other.

•When you cook or reheat whole fish, score theskin – this prevents cracking.

•Do not let food or a container touch the top orsides of the oven. This will prevent possiblearcing.

Using aluminum foilMetal containers should not be used in a microwaveoven. There are, however, some exceptions. If youhave purchased food which is prepackaged in analuminum foil container, refer to the instructions onthe package. When using aluminum foil containers,cooking times may be longer because microwaveswill only penetrate the top of the food.

You can turn off the turntable to heat 2 dinnerplates side by side or one dish that’s larger thanthe turntable. However, if you only need to heatone plate on the turntable, keep the turntable onfor best cooking results. Also, you should not turnover the turntable. A plate used on the turntablemust fit on it when the turntable is correct side up.

You can use a rack only if the rack is suppliedwith your microwave oven. If you use a rack notsupplied with the microwave oven, you can getpoor cooking performance and/or arcing.

You can use aluminum foil for shielding (usesmall, flat pieces), small skewers, and shallowfoil trays (if tray is 3⁄4 inch [19 mm] deep or less andhalf filled with food to absorb microwave energy).Never allow metal to touch walls or door. Nothing works.

•A household fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped.

•The electric company has had a power failure.

•The cook power is not at the recommended setting. Check the chart onpage 22.

•You have not allowed enough cooking time for the amount of food beingcooked. Larger amounts of food need longer cooking times.

•The oven door is not closed completely.

•You have set the controls as a minute timer. Touch TIMER OFF to cancelthe Minute Timer.
