we can encourage more games in

Mid Wales

A list of possible ideas to improve the make-up of the league

structure in view of difficulties experienced not only this

season, but over the last few years.

M.W.D.R.U. League

Suggestions and possible changes to improve number of

matches played.

Please discuss fully at club meetings and send views to

M.W.D.R.U. A.G.M. 2012 and make every effort to have your

club represented in person(s) at this meeting.

• Play more matches midweek

• Allow more 1st team players to play in League games for

2nds. teams

• League table based on average points scored per match

played

• All teams will receive 3 points for playing a match (4 for

draw, 5 for win) but nil for not turning up

• Matches to be played with equal numbers of players if less

than full complement e.g. 13 v. 13

• Opposition extra players or subs. can play for teams with less

than 15 players, and can swap at half time if necessary

• No (or less) penalties for non-competitive scrums

The present league rules

concerning these areas are as

follows:-

1. Teams will play one another

at home and away according to

the published league

programme.

2. League points will be

awarded on the basis of 4

points for a win and 2 points

to each team in a drawn game.

1 point will be awarded to a

losing team, no points will be

awarded to a team that forfeits

a game.

3. Placings will be decided on

the basis of league points

gained in the season. Where

teams have gained equal

numbers of league points, the

team having recorded the most

tries in the season shall be

given preference. If the

number of tries is equal, the

club with the most wins in a season shall be given preference.

4. If during the course of a match a team elects to take

uncontested scrums that team will forfeit a minimum of 1 point

gained in that match, in accordance with the guidelines set out

in Rule 43 ('Teams Without A Recognised Front Row').

5. With regards to WRU clubs, a registered player who has

played for the First Team within the previous month or in one

of the previous 4 matches, will then be ineligible to play in Mid

Wales league fixtures and shall remain so until the competition

secretary is notified, in writing, that the player is no longer a

senior player.

TEAMS WITHOUT A RECOGNISED FRONT ROW

6. To prevent games being called off when a team is unable to

field a front row, the game has to go ahead with uncontested

scrums, with the following points scoring:

Team A has no props and asks for uncontested scrums

Team B has a full team including props

Team A wins A points = 3 B points = 2

Team B wins A points = 1 B points = 4

Drawn game A points = 1 B points = 2

PLEASE discuss these ideas in your club and please ensure

that at least 2 club representatives attend this year's MWDRU

AGM with any thoughts or new suggestions on this very

important topic - the AGM takes place on Tuesday, June 12th

at Llanidloes RFC, commencing at 7.30pm.

If your club doesn't attend, then decisions may be

made that could be to your detriment.

Machynlleth’s Rhodri Jones wins first cap for Wales

Wales prop Rhodri Jones hoping practice makes perfect in new tighthead role FARMER’S son Rhodri Jones may be one of three new caps for Wales against the Barbarians on Saturday, but for players with his background, the omens for success on the international stage are good. Dan Lydiate, RBS Six Nations player of the tournament during the Grand Slam campaign just gone is another proud of his rural roots, Lions scrum-half Mike Phillips too. And Jones, still only 20, says he wiles away his time between training sessions with Wales talking to Lydiate about a fairly uncommon subject. “Dan and I regularly talk about tractors,” beamed the rookie prop who is being asked to prove he can be an alternative to Adam Jones at tighthead against the Barbarians. We have a bit of banter. We used to have a Zeta tractor on my farm, now we have a Landini.” It was on the 350-acre sheep-and-cattle farm at Pennal, just outside Machynlleth, that Jones learned about rugby. “I used to play against my brothers Dylan and Iwan on the farm. I learned a lot off them. Dylan, who is 26, is a prop and Iwan, 24, a fly-half, both for Machynlleth RFC. “I worked on the farm every day as a youngster and I enjoyed it. I still work on it when I go home. Farming is great. Instead of being in the gym all the time you are working different muscles and get fit in a more all-round sense. Rather than having to get in awkward positions for bench presses and squats, you just get on with your everyday work and it’s definitely benefited me.” Scarlets powerhouse Jones, 6ft 3in tall and weighing 18st 11lbs, is a bull of a prop who can pack down either side of the scrum. I came into the Scarlets as a tight-head and as a loose-head, having played a lot of age-grade rugby as a tight-head,” he explained. “Tight-head is normally the rock of the scrum. He needs to be solid on his own ball and also put the opposition under pressure on their ball. Loose-head just attacks the tight-head and can get out of the scrum to work around the field.” Lions, Wales and Ospreys ace Jones, and Iestyn Thomas and Pete ‘the Meat’ Edwards at the Scarlets have been providing expertise in his front-row education. Adam is experienced and is one of the best scrummagers in the world,” said Jones. “He’s has been helpful, giving me pointers and tips – it’s been great to have his help.“But practise makes perfect: the more you do it the better you are going to get. “Peter has been good to me, helping a lot. Even when I’ve been picked in front of him he’s come and helped me. Why is he called Pete the Meat? Because he’s just a big boy, I guess. He’s told me to be positive and given me technical help, while Iestyn Thomas has done the same. Rhodri Jones, who had a solid Junior World Championship for Wales Under-20s a year ago, agreed Wales do need more tight-heads to push through. That said, we have Craig Mitchell, who’s injured, and Scott, so there is strength there. We just all need games to improve.” Rhodri was with the Dragons for a year before joining the Scarlets. “I enjoyed my time with them but as I was in Llandovery College I thought I would have to move college, which I didn’t want to do, so I opted for the Scarlets. “Getting capped is a fantastic honour. I’ve been looking forward to this day since I started playing rugby. It’s every boy’s dream.”

Minutes of the meeting held at Llanidloes RFC on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Minute 1 - Apologies

Minute 2 - Minutes of last meeting

The Minutes of the last meeting were accepted as a true record.

Minute 3 - Matters arising from the last Minutes

Minute 4 - Treasurer’s Report

It was reported that the District currently had the following amounts in their accounts:

Current = £5,162.78

Deposit = £2,372.97

A cheque had been received from Llandrindod RFC for international tickets and it was reported that all tickets had

now been paid for.

Minute 5 - Correspondence

Copies of corresponence received since the last meeting were distributed and discussed.

Minute 6 - WDRU Report

The Secretary reported that he had attended a meeting of the Welsh Districts at the Millennium Stadium and would

forward copies of the Minutes of this meeting as soon as it was received.

Minute 7 - Competition Secretary’s Report

Tony again reported on how few league games were being played at present. He asked that all clubs notify him as a

matter of urgency with the dates of league games still to be played.

Due to the small amount of games being played, a discussion took place as to how this could be remedied in future

seasons and all clubs were asked to consider some suggestions which Tony would circulate to clubs in the near future,

these to be discussed at the AGM. If any club had a suggestion, other than those on Tony’s list, they would be

welcome to put it forward for consideration.

Cup and Shield Final - Tony reported that the Cup Final would between Rhayader and UWA 2nds and the Shield

Final between Aberystwyth 2nds/Llanidloes 2nds and COBRA 2nds, taking place at Trefyclawdd RFC on Sunday,

May 6th, with a 1.30pm and 3.30pm kick-off. Tony agreed to send over a checklist to the host club of what is required

on the Finals day.

Minute 8 - North Wales Rugby Council

The Secretary reported on a number of items including: Nant Conwy’s progress in the Swalec Bowl; North Wales

leagues update; RGC v Georgia and gave a list of dates for the various play-offs and finals which were due to be held

at the start of May.

The Secretary reminded all that any information that he receives with regard to rugby in North Wales is uploaded to

the North Wales web-site - www.nwru.co.uk

Minute 9 - Referee’s Society

Simon confirmed that the Mid Wales Referee’s Society would provide the match officials for the Mid Wales Shield

and Cup Finals.

Minute 10 - Any Other Business

There was no other business and it was agreed that the next meeting would be held on Tuesday, June 12th,

immediately after the Annual General Meeting.
