Te 50th (Northumbrian) Inantry Division was a erritorialDivision rom the north o England, mostly coal minersand workers rom the oundries and mills o Durham and

Yorkshire. Te divisions symbol was two s or the yneand ees rivers owing through the recruiting area.

FranceIn 1940 the division was sent to join the British ExpeditionaryForce (BEF) ghting alongside the French. Ater retreatingor nearly a week, two battalions o Durham Light Inantry

and two battalions o Matilda tanks counterattacked theGerman 7th Panzer Division under General Rommel at

Arras. Although ultimately unsuccessul, the attack boughttime or the Division to be evacuated rom Dunkirk. Backin England, the 50th division was rebuilt. Ten in 1941 they

were sent out to the Middle East to garrison rst Cyprus andthen Iraq and train or the coming battles.

Brigade BoxesIn 1942 the North Countrymen headed or Libya, whereGeneral Rommel had driven the Eighth Army back toGazala. Te 50th Division was deployed in three ortied

Brigade Boxes between the South Aricans to the north andthe Free French and Indians to the south. In theory theseislands o inantry scattered in a loose line across the desert

would restrict the enemys movements and provide saeharbours so that the British armour could sally orth anddestroy the enemy in a decisive battle.

gazalaAt the end o May 1942, RommelsArikakorpsdrove souththrough the desert around the Gazala line smashing mucho the British armoured strength in the process, but thenound itsel trapped in the Cauldron with no supply route. It appeared that the British plan was working. 150 InantryBrigade, supported by the Valentines o 44 RR, was astridethe vital righ Capuzzothe main supply line through tothe encircledArikakorps.

Ten, with everything set, the Eighth Armys commandersbickered and dithered. Rommel struck back with everythinghe had, desperately trying to break back through 150 Brigadeand open his supply line. For two days the outnumberedNorth Countrymen doggedly repelled every attack. On thethird day, 1 June, Rommel overran the brigade while Eighth

    Army looked on.

Te deeat o the British armoured divisions and a gallant, but unsupported attack by 5th Indian Division over the nextew days let the rest o the Gazala line cut o. Te South

Aricans on the coast managed to slip past Rommel at thelast moment, but 50th Division was surrounded. With the

Arikakorpslying to the east, a conventional withdrawal wasimpossible. Instead, 50th Division broke out through thestartled Italian inantry to the west. Once clear o the Italianront line, the Division headed south into the desert. Ater aretreat o 300 miles, they made it back to riendly lines.

MersaMatrUh50th Division ell back to the new deensive line at MersaMatruh in Egypt. Once more, the North Countrymen werelet down by Eighth Armys inept high command. Along withthe New Zealand Division and the remnants o 10th IndianDivision, the North Countrymen again ound themselves cuto. In a conused attack, most o the division escaped and

make their way back to the nal deence line at Alamein.

First Battle oF alaMeinBy the start o July RommelsArikakorpswas exhausted, but

with Alexandria just 60 miles away and the Eighth Armyequally tired, they pushed on. Over the next three weeks,South Aricans, Australians, New Zealanders, Indians, andthe men rom Northumbria ought a series o desperatebattles stopping Rommels advance at a terrible cost.

Rommel made one more attempt to reach the Suez Canaland the oilelds beyond at the end o August, but this timeGeneral Montgomery (Monty to his men) was in charge o

the Eighth Army. All talk o retreat was banned, a good planstuck to, and Rommels attack was deeated.

Te 50th Division had meanwhile been withdrawn andreinorced. Monty initially planned on disbanding thedivision as since May it had lost an entire brigade, and itstwo other brigades were under-strength and exhausted.Fortune smiled however, as a new drat o Northumbrianreinorcements arrived just in time to save the division.

second Battle oF alaMeinAter nine months o disasters and retreats, the EighthArmys new general launched its own oensive, OperationLightoot, on 23 October, 1942. In the northern sector, the 9th Australian, 51st (Highland), 2nd New Zealand, and1st South Arican Divisions attacked the German and Italianlines preceded by a massive artillery barrage. In the south,44th and 50th Divisions made diversionary attacks, with50th Divisions 69 Inantry Brigade attacking positions heldby the elite Italian Folgore Division at Munassib Depression.Te initial attacks bit deep into the enemy deences, but didnot break through. For the next week, much o the ghting

was undertaken by the 9 th Australian Division on the northcoast, drawing the enemy away rom the centre where thebreakthrough would come.

By 2nd November, Rommels army was near breaking. Montylaunched Operation Supercharge. For this the Northumbrian151 Inantry Brigade and the Highland 152 Inantry Brigade

joined the New Zealand Division or the attack. Followinga creeping barrage, the North Countrymen seized theirobjectives, and opened the way or the ollowing Britisharmour to move through and engage Arikakorps in a tankbattle at el El Aqqaqir. A ew days later, the deeatedGerman and Italian orces began their retreat.

Over the next three months the Eighth Army regainedeverything it had lost, pushing Rommel out o Libya and

into unisia. Te Eighth Army were helped in this by a newarrival. Te First Army, a combined British, French and USorce, had landed west o unisia in Operation orch and

was closing in on Rommel rom the west.

tUnisiaIn March 1943, rested and rereshed, 50th Division wassummoned back to the ront. Rommel had ailed in anoensive against Eighth Army at Medenine. Now it was theturn o Eighth Army with Operation Pugilist. Montgomeryselected the 50th Division to make a rontal attack on the line,

while the New Zealand Division made a wide outanking

move. Te German deences proved too strong or the NorthCountrymen to overcome, but their erce attack enabled theNew Zealanders to orce open the ebaga Gap with OperationSupercharge II. Te 1st Armoured Division dashed through,

with Rommels Arikakorps narrowly escaping the trap.

Advancing on the next Axis position at Wadi Akarit,Montgomery again launched a combined rontal attack andoutanking manoeuvreOperation Scipio, this time with69 Brigade and 51st (Highland) Division attacking, while4th Indian Division made a brilliant night attack throughmountains to outank the position. Te Axis orces wererunning out o space to retreat. Te First and Eighth Army

had linked up. unis ell at the start o May, ending theNorth Arican campaign.

sicily50th Division landed on the south-eastern beaches oSicily on 10 July, 1943. Initially the North Countrymenmet only sporadic resistance rom the Italians. Inland, the 51st (Highland) and 1st Canadian Divisions drovethe Germans and Italians back across rugged terrain. Tedivisions rapid advance came to a halt when 151 Brigade raninto elite German paratroops around Primasole Bridge.

Montgomery continued with attacks urther inland to try and

turn the German deences around Catania and the southernslopes o Mt. Etna, but skilul rearguards and demolitionsallowed the German deenders each time to pull back toanother position. Eventually, 50th Division reached its nalobjective o Messinaonly to nd the last o the Germanshad been evacuated and the Americans already there.

italyIn the meantime, the other divisions o the Eighth Armycontinued the war in the Mediterranean, landing in Italyon 3 September, 1943 in Operations Baytown (Calabria)and Slapstick (aranto). Progress northwards up the Italian

peninsula or these troops was hampered by determinedGerman rearguards and demolitions. Operation Avalanche, the landing o a combined US and British Fith Army atSalerno almost came to disaster when the Germans rapidlycounterattacked, but by the end o 1943 the Allies had closedup to the Gustav Line anchored on Monte Cassino.

norMandyOn 6 June, 1944, 50th (Northumbrian) Division returned tobattle, landing on Gold Beach in Normandy. For the nextsix weeks the North Countrymen hammered at the Germandeences suering 4500 casualties in the process. In August,

German resistance collapsed and 50th Division advancedacross France into Belgium. Once the line stabilised, thedivision returned to England as a training ormation. Forthe 50th (Northumbrian) Division the war was over.

All o the armies in the Empire were organised the same wayand all had the same basic training and equipment, yet thecircumstances o their employment, their ortunes in battle, and perhaps most importantly the backgrounds o theirsoldiers gave them all a distinct identity and character.

Captain Charles Hazlitt Upham, Charlie to those who knewhim, is unique in the annals o the British Empire. He is

the only combat soldier to ever win two Victoria Crosses, the highest award or gallantry in the British Army. A sheepmusterer in the high country o New Zealands Southern

Alps beore the war, Charlie was a man o contrasts. He hadhis rough edges, swearing with the best, but also a Diplomain Farm Management and was a qualied valuer.

When war came, he was one o the rst to enlist, determinedto halt the Nazi menace as quickly as possible so that hecould return and settle on his own arm. By the time theNew Zealand Division went into battle, hed been promotedto Second Lieutenant, despite requent clashes with theinstructors over tactics. On his way back rom the course,he picked up his batman, Leggy Le Gros an expert on themysteries o horse racing and shady deals, but loyal and asrough and ready as his master.

Upham won his rst VC on Crete in May 1941. Tere overa period o a week, despite sickness and wounds, he led hismen again and again into the attack. He was always at theront, leading the way, tackling machine-gun nests single-handedly or with his Sergeant, Kirk, armed with as manyhand grenades as he could nd, looking out or his men andshepherding them to saety.

Captain Upham is an Inantry team, a Warrior and aCompany Command team rated as Fearless Veteran.

Upham is armed with an Eneld No. 2 revolver and No. 36MMills Bomb hand grenades. He has Range 4/10cm, ROF 2

whether he moves or not, Anti-tank 2, and Firepower 4+.

He may join any New Zealand Rie Company or +50 points. He becomes the Company Command team replacing theexisting Company Command team. Upham may have aFord V8 car, which counts as a jeep, or +5 points.

Cmon, into em: Upham is a truly inspirational soldier.

He and any Rie Platoon he is currently leading always passMotivation ests on a roll o 2+.

Ill Get Te Bugger: Upham always advanced ahead o hismen wiping out machine-gun nests and clearing the way.

Upham may launch a charge rom 6/15cm away rom theenemy and moves 6/15cm when Charging into Contact orCounterattacking. Te rest o his platoon still move 4/10cm,oten meaning that they dont get into the ght until the platooncounterattacks.

Keep Your Bloody Head Down: Although Upham tookmany risks himsel, he hated putting his men at risk.

Each turn one Inantry team within 6/15cm o Upham may

roll a die i Destroyed. On a roll o 5+, Upham alerts them to thedanger and they duck out o the way and survive unharmed.

    characteristics

    special rUles

Charles Upham hated being in the limelight. He had to be

ordered to wear the ribbon o his VC on his uniorm andhated people bringing attention to it. He was very worriedthat he might be sent back to New Zealand or a public-ity tour and ought as hard to stay with his men as he hadagainst the Germans.

Upham won his second VC twice over as a Captain com-manding C Company, 20th Battalion. At Minqar Qaimoutside Mersa Matruh he was in the oreront o themidnight charge that saved the New Zealand Division, andthen again at Ruweisat Ridge in the Alamein line he led hiscompany into the teeth o the German deences, ghtingon with a shattered elbow until he and his men were nally

surrounded and captured, Upham unable to walk rom a legwound.

Uphams capture wasnt the end though. He was a bold andpersistent escaper and eventually ended up in Colditz, thecamp reserved or the most difcult prisoners. Even whenliberated, he still wanted to ght, joining an American unitor a ew days until ordered back to England.

Te First Army had British units resh rom home with the latest equip-ment ghting alongside the rst o the American units to ace Germany.

By 1857, the John Company controlled much o India, either directly or through puppet rulers. However, in this yeardissatisaction with British rule boiled over into open war

with the Indian Mutiny. In the wake o the Mutiny, QueenVictoria dissolved the Honourable East India Company andassumed direct rule over India. Te Companys armed orcesbecame the Indian Army. Although prior to the Mutinyrecruiting had been widespread across Indias many cultural, religious and ethnic population, the new Indian Army

restricted recruiting to groups seen as martial races (andmore importantly reliably loyal to the Crown).

Te Indian Army provided troops or many o the Empirescolonial wars, acquitting itsel well in the process. Te bestgraduates rom the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurstvied or positions in the Indian Army where pay was higherand battle more likely.

Te Indian Army made a massive contribution in theFirst World War with over a million men in arms and115 battalions serving overseas, ghting in every theatre othat war rom France to Gallipoli, Palestine, and Persia.

In the Second World War, the Indian contribution was evengreater with nearly two million soldiers in arms. 4th and5th Indian Divisions deeated the Italians in the Western Desertand Somalia in 1940, then ought in Syria, Iran, and Iraq. Teyreturned to the desert in 1942, joining 10th Indian Divisionas Rommel launched his attack on the Gazala Line. Tere, abysmal British generalship saw brigade ater brigade overrunas they aced Rommels entireArikakorpsone at a time.

Under General Montgomery, 4th Indian Division went onto win acclaim at Alamein and in the unisian Campaignbeore handing the torch to 8th Indian Division or thebattles in Italy.

Te Gurkhas o Nepal have a superb reputation as rst-classghting men. Tey are recruited rom hardy hill tribes in theHimalayan mountains. Teir erociousness when using theirheavy-bladed khukuri knives in close combat is legendary. So to is their determination not to abandon their weapon

    while still alive.

Gurkha platoons are Indian platoons. Tey use all o theBritish special rules on pages 246 to 248 o the rulebook andthe War Cry and North-west Frontier special rules above. In

addition they have their own Khukuri special rule.

KhUKUriEvery Gurkha carries a heavy-bladed recurved knie called akhukuri. Tey use this or everything rom cutting ood and

wood to chopping o the heads o their oes.

I there are no enemy ank teams or Bunkers within 2/5cmo a Gurkha team, it hits on a roll o 2+ in assaults.

Indian forces use all of the British special rules on pages246 to248 o the rulebookexcept the British Bulldog special rule. Inaddition they have their own War Cry and North-west Frontierspecial rules.

WarcryIndians always charge shouting war cries to gain the blessingso the gods and intimidate their enemies. Weak-hearted oeshearing this earsome cry will ee without a ght.

Indian and Gurkha platoons do not use the BritishBulldog special rule. Instead, when enemy platoons rsttest their Motivation est to Counterattack Indian orGurkha platoons in assaults, they must re-roll the die andapply the re-rolled result to all platoons that passed on theoriginal roll.

north-West FrontierTe Indian Army ought continuous wars against rebelliousPathan tribes on the amous (and mountainous) North-westFrontier. At the same time they ought the Naga tribes othe equally mountainous (but less well-known) North-eastFrontier. As a result they were specialists at mountain warare.

All Indian and Gurkha Inantry and Man-packed Gunteams are Mountaineers.

indian pattern carrierIndia lacked a heavy vehicle industry, so when called uponto provide carriers or their inantry, they adopted a wheeledversion based on the Ford 15 cwt truck, known appropriatelyenough as the Indian Pattern Carrier.

Te First Army under General Anderson was ormed in December 1942 rom Eastern askForce set up or the Operation orch landings to liberate Algeria and unisia.

It was the rst army to combine British, American, and French troops under one commander.Unortunately, ew o its divisions or senior ofcers had any experience in the current war.

One o the oddities o war was that the First Army, having sailed directly rom Britain, was actually better equipped than the

Tey had the heavy Churchill tank in place o the lighter Valentinein their inantry tank companies, and received the 17/25 pdr heavy anti-tank gun sooner. Te 6th Armoured Divisionarrived in unisia with a unique mixture o Valentine andCrusader tanks. Its three armoured regiments were the16th/5th Lancers, the 17th/21st Lancers, and the 2nd Lothianand Border Horse. Te Lancers were both old regiments

with illustrious histories. Te 16th/5th were an amalgama-tion o the old 16th Lancers and the newer (and thereoreless senior and listed second) 5th Lancers. Likewise, the17th/21st Lancers were an amalgamation o the old 17th and21st Lancers. Te Lothian and Border Horse, on the other

hand, were a yeomanry regiment that only dated back to justbeore the turn o the century.

Te cap badge o the 17th/21st Lancers embodies the cavalryspirit o these regiments. It shows a skull and cross bones

with the motto Or Glory underneath.

Tey have earned their nickname Te Death or GloryBoys many times over. Perhaps their most amous exploit

was to lead the Charge o the Light Brigade at Balaklava inCrimea.

Te 6th Armoured Division began landing in North Arica inNovember 1942. Blade Force, based around 17th/21st Lancers, raced ahead to seize unis. Tey came close to taking theirgoal, but were orced back by strong German counterattacks. In February 1943, the 6th Armoured Division rushed southto stop the German breakthrough at Kasserine Pass. Here

they gallantly pitted their Valentines and Crusaders againstGerman Panzer IV and iger tanks.

In March 1943, the armoured regiments re-equipped withSherman III tanks. Ten they joined the armoured divisionso the Eighth Army or the nal drive on unis.

Te battalion anti-tank platoon has six 2 pdr anti-tank guns.It is quickly apparent that these are inadequate against theheavily armoured panzers, and in 1943 they are replaced

Te 6 pdr was available as a design beore the out-break othe war, but was shelved in 1939 until required. Its arrivalon the battleeld was urther delayed in 1940 when it wasdecided to continue producing the 2 pdr anti-tank gun. It

Ater the withdrawal o all British units rom mainland Europeater Dunkirk, Prime Minister Winston Churchill orderedthe ormation o irregular raiding units or Commandos to

Te Commandos conductedmany small raids against the French and Norwegian coasts, but their most successul action was Operation Chariotby No. 2 Commando, which wrecked the dry dock at St.Nazaire, orcing the giant battleship irpitz to return toGermany or repairs.

Te Commandos urther distinguished themselves at Dieppein August 1942, where No. 3 and No. 4 Commandos werethe only units to successully complete their assignments, despite initial setbacks.

no British BUlldogCommandos are earless, but they are also raiders. Teir

job is to get in, strike hard, and get out. Prolonged combatssimply delay their mission, so the British Bulldog rule does

    not apply to Commando platoons.

Ignore the rst Destroyed Commando Section, Commando

Machine-gun Platoon, or Commando Mortar Platoon ina Commando when determining i it is necessary to take aCompany Morale Check.

yoU are not aloneCommandos are small, hard-hitting strike orces. As eachcommando troop has only two small platoons, they mustoperate together to win. Every commando knows that nomatter what happens, they are not alone. Even i their troopruns into insurmountable trouble, another troop will bethere to help them out.
