“It’s not about us, it
Meals on Wheels, a program of Senior Life Resources NW, is funded by Aging and Long Term Care of Southeastern Washington, United Way, Prosser UGN, Kennewick CDBG and your donations. This community meals program does not discriminate in providing services on the grounds of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, sexual
orientation, political ideology, or the presence of any sensory, mental or physical handicap.
Thank You to ALL our Volunteers!
Upcoming Closures
Monday October 14th: All meals sites are closed for the All Staff Training
Welcome & Thank You to Our New Volunteers!
Café: Greg Schreck,
LeAnn Watrous, Sandra Ferland
Central Kitchen: Kim Vorheis, Taylor Snyder
Our Volunteer Coordinator, Penni, is out of the office for a few weeks, so it’s
a great time to say an extra special thank you to our amazing Volunteers!
We absolutely could NOT operate our Meals on Wheels program
without the incredible dedication and hard work of our excellent
Volunteers! Check out these facts about our dedicated and
kind Meals on Wheels Volunteers:
1. 499 Volunteers have donated time already in 2019! In all
of 2018, a total of 480 volunteers donated time, which we
thought was a huge number, but we’re already miles
ahead of that total.
2. In addition to donating their time, many of our Volunteers
are also generous financial supporters of our program.
3. Many of our Volunteers tell us that they feel they receive more
benefit from volunteering than our participants do from the work of
our Volunteers.
4. A number of our Volunteers also volunteer with other agencies and are very active in their communities.
5. Final Fact: Meals on Wheels Volunteers are the best on the planet!
Former United States Secretary of Defense,
General James Mattis, will be the Keynote Speaker
at our Fundraising Breakfast on March 10, 2020!
A Richland native, General Mattis enlisted in the
Marine Corps in 1969 and served in the Corps until
his retirement in 2013.
We are thrilled and grateful to have General
Mattis address our Meals on Wheels supporters!
Thank You and Thank You!
Thank you to Washington Association of State
Nutrition Providers and Meals on Wheels
America! Both organizations provided generous
scholarships that allowed our Program Support
Coordinator, Sarah McDonald, to attend the
National Meals on Wheels Annual Conference in
Dallas. The conference offers wonderful
educational and networking opportunities to help
our agency best serve our seniors.

Meals on Wheels strives to provide practical information to help you make healthy lifestyle choices. If you have any questions about your diet, please contact our Registered
Dietitian, Jill Berg, at (509)735-1911 or email [email protected].
Frozen Meals
If you’re a home delivery or
dining center client who
receives frozen meals to eat
on weekends, please let your
Volunteer Driver or Site
Manager know if you already
have a freezer full of meals, or
if you know friends or family will be taking care of
your weekend meal needs. We’re happy to put
your frozen meal deliveries on hold until you’ve
had a chance to use up what you already have on
hand. We’ll be glad to resume the frozen meal
deliveries as soon as you’re ready for more. Due
to food safety concerns we are not able to take
back meals that have already been delivered.
Our goal is to continue to serve every senior who
needs service without ever putting anyone on a
waiting list. Working together as good stewards
of our funding helps us continue this valuable
service for all seniors. Thank you!
Did you ever wonder how the meals at Meals on Wheels are planned? The Older Americans Act, which provides some of our funding, sets standards which all Senior Nutrition Programs must follow in order to receive funding. Here is a brief guideline describing the foods our program must provide:
• Variety of vegetables, • Variety of fruits, including whole fruits, • At least 50% of grains that are whole grains, • Low-fat dairy products, • Variety of lean meats, • Limited saturated fats, sodium, and added
sugars. In addition to the above guidelines, when using nutrient analysis (as we do), our meals must meet one-third of the current Reference Daily Intake (RDI) for key macro- and micronutrients in each meal. The requirement is to achieve the 1/3 RDI for adults ages 51 and older. Using nutrient analysis, the nutrients can be averaged over a one-week period. One nutrient I’d like to focus on is fiber. Perhaps you’ve noticed that the carbohydrate count is posted on the menu with each day’s meal. We occasionally hear comments that the carbohydrate counts seem high to you. One reason for the higher carb count is our requirement to reach 1/3 RDI for fiber in each meal. One third of the RDI for fiber is 9.3 grams per meal. Fiber is one of the components that contributes to the total carbohydrates listed on the menu. You will see more whole grain breads, high fiber fruits & vegetables, and increased use of legumes, all of which contribute to increasing fiber in our meals. The benefits of a high fiber diet include normalizing bowel movements, promoting bowel health, lowering cholesterol, helping to control blood sugars, and aiding in achieving heathy weight. If you are choosing to eat a lower carbohydrate diet, you may opt to eat a smaller amount of the starchy vegetables, whole grain breads, or desserts that are provided in our meals. We will continue to offer a menu designed to provide 1/3 RDI for key macro- and micro-nutrients to provide our seniors with well-balanced, nutritious, and tasty meals.
