WHAT’S HOT Mobile Check Deposit!
Brunswick has a new look! We are proud to announce the Brunswick Office Remodel Project is complete! With service, safety and security as our key objec-tives, along with a little elbow grease and support from local vendors we welcome you to stop in, have a cup of coffee and check out our new digs!
Our first priority was to better utilize the lobby area to enhance the member experi-
ence. This remodel project has afforded us the space to implement two Finan-cial Service Representative (FSR) roles in the Bruns-wick office. Our FSRs are here to provide added value to you, our member, by personally assisting you with products, services and new accounts. Have you ever said, “I want to sit down and talk to someone about mobile banking”, well now you can, while enjoying a hot cup of coffee from the coffee bar!
Behind the fresh new look (especially the orange wall), the project included a number
of infrastructure enhancements. New energy efficiency upgrades, building security and camera upgrades, and fire safety equip-ment improvements were all elements of continued on page 2
“ Member response has been incredible. The project has truly created an environment for us to better engage with our members.”
– Susan Clark, VP Retail Services, Brunswick

It seems that almost daily there is news of another major IT security breach or data compromise. From the Target card breach to the Heartbleed Open SSL issue to security issues with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser, it is difficult to have confidence that your online and purchase activity is secure and safe from being hacked.
Your Credit Union offers a number of technology-related account access services and we are diligent in ensuring these platforms remain secure. What complicates matters is that there are a myriad of computer devices, internet browsers and applications that our members use to access these services that can create vulnerabilities.
Follow these best practices to protect your online activity:
Stay Current: Keep your computer/smart device up to date with all available security
patches and operating system releases. In addition, be sure to update the virus definitions within your anti-virus software.
Use Complex Passwords: Your close atten-tion to maintaining strong password controls can be your best defense against security compromises. Most websites now require strong or complex passwords, however even if they do not it is best to:
• Use a minimum of 8 characters
• Use a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters – the more character types the better!
• Avoid dictionary words, proper names, or social security numbers for passwords
• Update your passwords regularly, whether the website requires you change it or not.
Maintain Unique Website Credentials: It is common, however unwise to use the same website credentials (Username/Password) for multiple websites that you visit regularly. No matter how strong that password may be, if you use the same credentials on a less secure website that you also use for online access to your Midcoast account – you may be putting that information at risk.
Protect Your Midcoast Account: By Following These Best Practices

Recently I was made aware of the passing of a longtime volunteer and supporter of the Credit Union, David E. Desmond, at the age of 87. Being relatively new to the Credit Union and the Bath community, I was unfamiliar with Mr. Desmond and the imprint he had on this institution, the city and the region. Quickly, the news of his passing spread and many long term employees that had the pleasure of personally knowing Mr. Desmond were deeply saddened and aided me in learning more about him.
I learned that Mr. Desmond was a well-known figure in Bath, a successful businessman operating a funeral home for decades in this community providing comfort to many families that have lost loved ones. Mr. Desmond was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving as president of the Parish Council, a lector and Eucharistic Minister for many years. In addition, Mr. Desmond was deeply involved in the better-ment of his community. From the expansion of the Bath Country Club, to supporting the Bath Lodge of Elks, Bath Area Senior Citizens, Bath Area Food Bank, among many others local causes, Mr. Desmond’s positive influ-ence was strong.
In regards to his legacy with the Credit Union, Mr. Desmond served for over thirty years on the Board of Directors, largely in the capacity of President, which is the equivalent of our Board Chairperson role today. In a review of our archives, I found Mr. Desmond’s signature on a number of significant milestones in the Credit Union’s history. Mr. Desmond served as President when the Credit Union first changed its name and charter from St. Mary’s

The BackstoryCommunity FCU to Bath Area Community FCU in 1975. In 1986, Mr. Desmond presided over the merger with St. Charles FCU in Brunswick and the subsequent name change to Midcoast FCU. He also served as President when the Credit Union merged with Damariscotta’s Fisherman’s CU in 1991.
In review of this one man’s accomplish-ments, it is evident that he possessed a true sense of community. He gave of himself in many ways and touched many lives. Our sympathies go out to his family and those close to him. We thank David E. Desmond for lasting and profound impact he had on the formative years of Midcoast Federal Credit Union.
“ I had the pleasure of knowing David and serving on the Midcoast Board of Directors with him for many years. David always kept our members’ best interests first and provided valuable leadership to the Credit Union.”
-Beverly Emero, Midcoast FCU Director
