Virginia's Middle Peninsula region encompasses approximately 1,388 square miles in the eastcentral Tidewater area of Virginia. This central location allows for a lifestyle with access to theamenities of both rural and urban areas for the more than 90,000 residents. The region lies at theheart of the Virginia metropolitan triangle of Hampton Roads, Richmond and Northern Virginia.

Superb primary transportation corridors and an uncongested highway infrastructure provide easy,90-minute access to the urban areas of Northern Virginia, 30-minute access to Greater Richmond,and just minutes to Hampton Roads.

The region is served by three general aviation airports, a Norfolk Southern rail spur in the Town ofWest Point, and numerous marinas. Limited demand-response transit is provided by Bay Transit.Middle Peninsula Rideshare coordinates travel demand management services in the region.

Government

The Middle Peninsula includes the counties of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William,Mathews, and Middlesex. Each county has a county administrator and a board of supervisors.

Each county has a comprehensive plan and zoning and subdivision ordinances.

There are three incorporated towns in the Middle Peninsula.

Taxes

Localities in Virginia collect a 1% sales tax. They do not tax other items taxed at the State level.

Counties and cities in Virginia are separate taxing entities. Therefore, a company pays taxes toeither a county or to a city.

If a company is located in a town, it pays town and county taxes except for utility taxes which arepaid only to the town and the license tax which is paid only to the town unless town law permitsthe additional collection of a county tax.

Manufacturers pay real estate, machinery and tools, truck and automobile, utility, and sales taxes.

Nonmanufacturers pay real estate, tangible personal property, truck and automobile, utility, andsales taxes. They also may pay either a merchants' capital or a license tax.

The Middle Peninsula region is served by two hospitals the Riverside Health System and SentaraHealthcare. Riverside Tappahannock Hospital is a 67-bed facility that offers state-of-the-artmedical care. A wide variety of services are available ranging from traditional hospital care tointensive care, sophisticated diagnostics, home care, and physician specialists in most elds. InGloucester, Riverside Health Care offers 24-hour emergency services, a 12,000-square footIntensive Care Unit, outpatient services, and more than 50 area physicians at Riverside WalterReed Hospital, a 67-bed acute care facility. Direct access is provided to Riverside RegionalMedical Center's Level II Trauma Center, nationally recognized Heart Center, and 18-bed NeonatalIntensive Care Unit, all located in Newport News. Gloucester’s Middle Peninsula Cancer Centerand the Peninsula Cancer Institute house both Medical Oncology and Radiation OncologyDepartments. Sentara Healthcare operates ve therapy centers and physicians' practices in theregion. The region has numerous rural health care clinics, free clinics, nursing home facilities,assisted living facilities, and hospices.

There are additional top-quality hospitals and health care facilities within a 100-mile radius of theregion in Richmond, Newport News, and Norfolk.

The immediate retail and service needs of area residents are met by numerous retail andservice-related small businesses, primarily anchored in the commercial areas of Gloucester to thesouth and Tappahannock to the north. The region is known for its specialty shops, restaurantsand antique stores. Additional shopping opportunities can be found in the nearby metro areas ofHampton Roads, Richmond and Fredericksburg.

A region that respects and values a calm quality of life, the Middle Peninsula's lifestyle is borne ofa love for the environment and the peaceful rhythm of the ow of the wide rivers that surround thepeninsula. Bordered by the Rappahannock River, York River and the Chesapeake Bay and with1,055 miles of shoreline, the Middle Peninsula offers residents and visitors endless opportunitiesto experience the area’s rich quality of life. Recreational boating opportunities range from paddlingthrough the pristine Dragon Run Swamp; exploring the rich coastal marshes; sailing the openwaters of the rivers, the smaller bays or the Chesapeake Bay; shing; waterskiing the protectedcoves; to nding a quiet place to anchor out for the night. All along the river there are beautiful,unspoiled beaches where swimming and sunbathing can be enjoyed. There are marinas and yachtharbors concentrated in Deltaville, Urbanna, and Grey’s Point. Motorboat races, regattas andsailing races are held throughout the summer.

The region has a rich historical heritage with an abundance of Colonial and Civil War sites. NearbyJamestown and Yorktown are known for their military inuence in America's history; Williamsburgis known for its governing inuence. The Middle Peninsula of Virginia, located just north of theseColonial-era communities, was America's production center where farmers and craftsmen builtthe middle economy that sustained the early development of the Country. Museums include theEssex County Museum and Historical Society, the Gloucester Museum of History, the PocahontasMuseum, Rosewell, Fort Nonsense in Mathews County, Gwynn's Island Museum, MathewsMaritime Museum, Tompkins Cottage, the Deltaville Maritime Museum, the Middlesex CountyMuseum, The Old Tobacco Warehouse in Urbanna, King and Queen Courthouse Tavern Museum,King William Historical Museum, and the Pamunkey Indian Museum.

The Middle Peninsula is home to four federally-recognized Indian tribes: the Pamunkey, theMattaponi, and the Upper Mattaponi are based in King William County while the Rappahannockare based in King and Queen County. The Pamunkey were the rst Tribe to receive federalrecognition in 2016 and subsequently, in 2017, the other Tribes were also designated. Thesehistoric cultures have unique access to federal resources to help protect their cultural heritage.

The region boasts an active regional arts community. Mathews County is the heart of the region'sartisan culture with a nexus based at the Bay School Community Arts Center. Balanced at theother end of the Middle Peninsula is the Tappahannock Art Gallery. The Virginia Oyster Trail andthe Artisan Trail of Virginia create connectivity for independent artisans and heritage businessesto become more visibly engaged with a variety of audiences.

The Middle Peninsula leverages broad-based civic involvement in festivals and events that attractthousands of visitors annually. The Gloucester Daffodil Festival, Mathews Market Days and theUrbanna Oyster Festival arguably are the most prominent on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia. Butmany others are happening such as southern Gloucester’s Guinea Jubilee and the GloucesterWine Festival. The Main Street Blues and Brews event, relatively new to the area, is becomingimmensely popular, as is the Tour de Chesapeake bicycle race in Gloucester. The Arts & WineFestival at Locust Grove in King and Queen County draws multitudes of visitors each year; as doesArts in the Middle, a juried ne arts event in Middlesex County. RivahFest in Tappahannockcelebrates the importance of the river to the town's heritage. Holly Point Nature Park in Deltavillehosts a series of summer concerts. Virginia Motor Speedway, located in Middlesex County, hostsweekly races as well as national and regional touring series. Numerous camping venues offer avariety of outdoor experiences, from tent camping to "glamping"; BethPage Resort, located inMiddlesex County, has been named the highest-rated waterfront RV resort in the nation, threetimes.
