Virginia's Middle Peninsula region encompasses approximately 1,388 square miles in the eastcentral Tidewater area of Virginia. This central location allows for a lifestyle with access to theamenities of both rural and urban areas for the more than 90,000 residents. The region lies at theheart of the Virginia metropolitan triangle of Hampton Roads, Richmond and Northern Virginia.

Government

The Middle Peninsula includes the counties of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William,Mathews, and Middlesex. Each county has a county administrator and a board of supervisors.

Each county has a comprehensive plan and zoning and subdivision ordinances.

There are three incorporated towns in the Middle Peninsula.

Taxes

Localities in Virginia collect a 1% sales tax. They do not tax other items taxed at the State level.

Counties and cities in Virginia are separate taxing entities. Therefore, a company pays taxes toeither a county or to a city.

If a company is located in a town, it pays town and county taxes except for utility taxes which arepaid only to the town and the license tax which is paid only to the town unless town law permitsthe additional collection of a county tax.

Manufacturers pay real estate, machinery and tools, truck and automobile, utility, and sales taxes.

Nonmanufacturers pay real estate, tangible personal property, truck and automobile, utility, andsales taxes. They also may pay either a merchants' capital or a license tax.

The Middle Peninsula region is served by two hospitals the Riverside Health System and SentaraHealthcare. Riverside Tappahannock Hospital is a 67-bed facility that offers state-of-the-artmedical care. A wide variety of services are available ranging from traditional hospital care tointensive care, sophisticated diagnostics, home care, and physician specialists in most elds. The Middle Peninsula is home to four federally-recognized Indian tribes: the Pamunkey, theMattaponi, and the Upper Mattaponi are based in King William County while the Rappahannockare based in King and Queen County. The Pamunkey were the rst Tribe to receive federalrecognition in 2016 and subsequently, in 2017, the other Tribes were also designated. Thesehistoric cultures have unique access to federal resources to help protect their cultural heritage.

The region boasts an active regional arts community. Mathews County is the heart of the region'sartisan culture with a nexus based at the Bay School Community Arts Center. Balanced at theother end of the Middle Peninsula is the Tappahannock Art Gallery. The Virginia Oyster Trail andthe Artisan Trail of Virginia create connectivity for independent artisans and heritage businessesto become more visibly engaged with a variety of audiences.

The Middle Peninsula leverages broad-based civic involvement in festivals and events that attractthousands of visitors annually. The Gloucester Daffodil Festival, Mathews Market Days and theUrbanna Oyster Festival arguably are the most prominent on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia. Butmany others are happening such as southern Gloucester’s Guinea Jubilee and the GloucesterWine Festival. The Main Street Blues and Brews event, relatively new to the area, is becomingimmensely popular, as is the Tour de Chesapeake bicycle race in Gloucester. The Arts & WineFestival at Locust Grove in King and Queen County draws multitudes of visitors each year; as doesArts in the Middle, a juried ne arts event in Middlesex County. RivahFest in Tappahannockcelebrates the importance of the river to the town's heritage. Holly Point Nature Park in Deltavillehosts a series of summer concerts. Virginia Motor Speedway, located in Middlesex County, hostsweekly races as well as national and regional touring series. Numerous camping venues offer avariety of outdoor experiences, from tent camping to "glamping"; BethPage Resort, located inMiddlesex County, has been named the highest-rated waterfront RV resort in the nation, threetimes.
