To the parents/guardians/caregivers of «First_Name» «Last_Name»,

Diwali, or Deepavali, is the Hindu festival of lights, which is celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere. One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance." During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated. The preparations and rituals for the festival typically last five days, with the climax occurring on the third day coinciding with the darkest night of the month Kartika of the Hindu calendar.

In the lead up to Diwali, celebrants will prepare by cleaning, renovating and decorating their homes and offices. During the climax, Hindus adorn themselves in their finest clothes, illuminate the interior and exterior of their homes with diyas (lamps and candles), offer puja (prayers) to Lakshmi – the goddess of prosperity and wealth, light fireworks and partake in family feasts, where mithai (sweets) and gifts are shared. Diwali is a major cultural event for all members of Hindu and Jain faiths.

Sincerely,

A. Daniel, A. Gheewala, D. Heron, S. Maharaj.

Happy Halloween from MCI!

On Wednesday, October 31st, MCI staff and students took part in Halloween. StuCo hosted a Haunted House in the Cafeteria, we had a Pumpkin carving competition, Ms. Falzarano’s Hairstyling & Esthetics students provided free scary special effects and many staff and students dressed up to mark the event. Reminder: MCI is a Scent-Free School

Please be reminded that many staff and students at MCI have allergic reactions or sensitivities to scented products like perfumes, deodorants and other fragrances. This includes Axe. All staff, students, and visitors are asked to refrain from using scented products, as they can result in adverse effects on the health of others.

We also have a number of students and staff in our school who have compromised and challenging health situations. When you spray Axe or other scents, including hairspray, you are triggering physical reactions in students and staff that can result in significant physical reactions, doctor’s appointments and missed time at school. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continued understanding and support!

Drive safe reminder!

Attention all drivers in the MCI Community! We have had a number of dangerous situations arise recently where members of the MCI student body have been injured by unsafe drivers in and around the school. We would like to remind you to adhere to the rules of the road and to keep the following in mind:

Please follow the speed limits. Driving a little bit slower, especially in school zones, is a good way to practice safe driving habits!

Please leave home early – often times accidents happen when people are rushing.

With the daylight savings time change soon approaching, roads will be darker so please pay extra close attention to pedestrians in the early hours of the day as well as late at night.

Please follow the rules of the road – the MCI parking lot has one dedicated entrance (west end of the parking lot) and one dedicated exit (east end of the parking lot).

Put your phone away. Distracted driving is never a good idea…your texts can wait!

Reduce all potential distractions and focus on the road at all times.

Be extra cautious and always be prepared to make a sudden stop.

Be aware of school buses and other vehicles in pick up/drop off areas.

Take extra care when approaching stop signs, crosswalks, and traffic lights.

Roads will soon become slick with the cold weather only weeks away…ensure that your vehicle is ready for harsh winter climates!

Expect the unexpected!

Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge

Did you know that MCI will participate in the online the Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge on November 12th, 2018, during periods 3 and 4 in room 336? The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) is a problem solving contest for grade 9 and 10 students with a focus on computational and logical thinking. Questions are inspired by topics in computer science but only require comfort with concepts found in Math curriculum common to all provinces. During the 45-minute session, students will answer 15 questions for 90 total points. The BCC exposes students to a new subject and way of thinking so there isn’t a need to prepare for the contest. However, you can get a feel for the style of the problems by viewing past

contests and these sample questions found at the University of Waterloo’s website: https://www.cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/bcc.html If you are a grade 9 or 10 student and wish to participate in the BCC, please see Mrs. Kapustina in room 336 to register for the contest before November 9. Practice BCC questions from last year’s challenge will take place on Wednesday, November 7, after school in room 336.

Islamic Heritage Month – Literature Café

YRDSB’s Alliance of Educators for Muslim Students concluded their October-long celebration of Islamic Heritage Month at Middlefield Collegiate Institute with a community Literature Café. Coordinating Superintendent of Education, Indigenous Education and Equity, Cecil Roach began the night with Board greetings. Author and YRDSB teacher Uzma Jalaluddin read from her titled novel “Ayesha At Last” and engaged guests in a dialogue around authentic voices, affirming Muslim identities and representation in literature. Guests were invited to share readings from their favourite Muslim authors and their personal works. The evening was truly a celebration of literature and heritage with students, staff, families and community.

There is a positive relationship between regular attendance and success in school. Students at MCI are required to attend regularly, to be punctual, and to participate in all scheduled classes.

VALID ABSENCES include illness, bereavement or family emergency.

AUTHORIZED ABSENCES include dentist/doctor appointments, driver’s test, and court appearances.

EXCUSED ABSENCES refer to field trips and school sanctioned events. Students are still considered to be at school.

EXTENDED ABSENCES of four days or more require the completion of a “Special Leave” form at least one week in advance of the leave. This form may be obtained from the Main Office. A parent/guardian signature is required. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on all work missed.

DO NOT plan absences or family vacations during culminating and exam periods as the evaluations CANNOT be rescheduled.

Type of Absence Parent/Guardian Responsibility Absent for a Full Day Phone the school with a valid reason the same day or send a note

upon return

Absent for One or More Classes Phone with valid reason indicating the time of absence or send a note with the student

Leaving Before the End of the Day Student signs out in attendance office with a note from the parent/guardian

In the Event of an Emergency Contact the office as soon as possible.

For safety reasons, students who have signed out must leave the building as they will not be directly supervised.
