Punjab will witness high-stakes battle in many seatsincluding Amritsar and Bathinda .In Bathinda, SAD candidate anddaughter-in-law of Chief MinisterParkash Singh Badal, HarsimratKaur Badal is locked in a tightcontest against her husbandSukhbir Singh Badal's estranged

cousin PPP's Manpreet SinghBadal who is backed by Congressand CPI. Harsimrat Badalattributes the corruption issues toruling UPA Alliance at the nationallevel. Manpreet Badal is alsostoking the anti-incumbency fireby asking people to vote againstthe ruling Badals, if not for him.He is also taking potshots at thedevelopment claims by pointingto the heavy taxes imposed by theSAD.He is also trying to keep thevote bank of his fledgling PPP bydefending his decision to conteston the Congress symbol. Singer-turned-politician Jassi Jasraj is thecandidate for Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) in Bathinda. Jassi Jasrajwas recently here in Canada andhas acted in Punjabi Film also.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who is eyeing the post of financeminister in the next government atthe Centre, is locked in a toughelectoral battle in this Sikh holycity with Maharaja of PatialaCaptain Amarinder Singh, who ismaking a political comeback of hisown. Though Congress has

denied there is any Modi wave inPunjab, BJP leader Arun Jaitley ina scathing criticism againstCongress and reiterated BJP'sconquest in Amritsar sayingpeople of Punjab are distraughtwith the performance of Congressat the national level and blamedCongress candidate CaptAmarinder Singh for theimposition of property taxes inPunjab. Though Amrinder Singhhas denied that he wasresponsible for property taxes inPunjab.

Hogging light on Amritsar,Yudhvir Jaswal mentioned onRadio Southasian Pulse thatresidents here are agitated at thefact that the city has not beendeveloped in a manner it deserved. The government not only shouldhave upgraded facilities at thetattered airport but given boost tocommerce, created employmentand augmented tourism due to thepresence of the Golden Temple butuprooted corruption as well. Lawand order along with the menaceof Drugs are also major local

Issues.Yudhvir said the

industrialists are worried of thedwindling industry here in wakeof diminishing trade activity at theWagah-Attari border, impositionof a property tax and the menaceof drugs. They have shownresentment against the failing featof Akali Dal thus a change iskeenly awaited. But CaptAmarinder Singh has highlightedthe fact that only a Punjabi canresolve the issues of this state notoutsider from BJP.

Meanwhile, BJP-SADCandidate Arun Jaitely hasclaimed to have deep roots inPunjab saying his mother is aPunjabi and his sister was born inAmritsar, thus he has a closeaffinity with Punjab province. Onthe other hand Punjab ChiefMinister Prakash Singh Badal hasclaimed that with the victory of ahigh profile candidate like ArunJaitley would not only be valuablefor Amritsar but the whole stateas he would be able to highlightthe ailing issues of this region. Itis worth mentioning that ManishTewari and Preneet Kaur weregiven important portfolios butthey did deliver anything forPunjab is debatable.

A c t o r - t u r n e d - A A Pcandidate from Chandigarh GulPanag on Sunday campaigned infavour of her party's Amritsarnominee Daljit Singh, and exhortedthe people to cast their votes infavour of AAP to "get rid" ofSAD, BJP and Congress.

The Aam Aadmi Party hasfielded an eye surgeon Daljit Singhagainst the BJP's Arun Jaitley andthe Congress' Amrinder Singh inAmritsar. Joining the ongoingverbal battle among othercandidates from Amritsar Lok

Sabha seat, Dr Daljit Singhrecently said to Hindustan Timesthat his BJP rival Arun Jaitley istrying to 'piggyback' on the so-called Modi wave besides Badalsand revenue minister Bikram SinghMajithia. He further said that itwould have been better for Jaitleyto "go on his own steam than topiggyback on someone becausemany times such a move backfires. Also, those who piggyback onother hardly sprout their ownwings". Dr Daljit Singh said, "Whywas Jaitely waiting for so long tobring about development toAmritsar.

Congress stalwart R L Bhatiahad won Amritsar a record sixtimes, but Amritsar has beenvoting for BJP since 2004 whenthe party fielded cricketer-turnedpolitician Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Yudhvir invited IqbalRamuwalia, an AAP supporter wholives in Canada and was in Punjabthese days to comment on the stateof affairs in the province. Thoughunwell, Ramuwalia informed hehas toured 50 to 60 villages in theprovinces and only seen completedevastation due to corruption, nuisance of widespread drug use,and unabated inflation. Heinformed that lack of infrastructureand broken roads has pushedfarmers at the verge of hunger asthey cannot take their crops tocities speaking volumes of AkaliDal's failure.

He reported that Arvind

Kejriwal's tour to Amritsar haspumped new blood in Punjab aspeople specially youth, who haveno future even after completingtheir degrees are looking for achange. According to Ramuwalia,AAP stand a fair chance to dowell on the 13 seats of Punjab and1 Seat in Chandigarh if Akali Daldoes not play dirty games. Heeven predicted victory for H.S.Phoolka in Ludhiana, BhagwantMann in Sangrur. Ramuwaliaadded if drugs, injustice andcorruption are wiped from the cityand court functioning is madeefficient Punjab will gain force.

Yudhvir asked what were hisexpectations of Modi's Punjabyatra next week? Ramuwaliadeclared it would not make anydifference as the people of Punjabhave seen the rules of BJP,Congress and Akali Dal, now theyare ready to give chance to AAP.Asked if Kejriwal's decision toresign from Delhi constituencywas correct, Ramuwaliamaintained had he not resigned thesame people would haveconsidered him power hungry.

About Ludhiana where twopoints of view exist as oneconsiders industry prospering inthe city, the other denying it,Ramuwalia declared industry is ina shambles and industrialist arenot happy at all due to the rawdeals they are getting on thehands of government officials.

Kejriwal and Mr Phoolka were riding in openjeep. The convoy of cars and motorcycles was over 3km long itwas very popular among the citizens. All along the route the itwas greeted with cheers, flowers, snacks and slogans of vic-tory. The impact of the show amongst the residents in terms ofvotes will be outstanding. The young voter will make a bigdifference. This is first time that intellectual candidates havedecided to come out for the sake of Indian future. It may besomething like Jack Layton's NDP charge. The road show was a grand success in spite of the mediaboycott by the local channels and a scant coverage by mostnews papers. This attitude of some of the media will not im-pact the spirit and the bloodless revolution is continuing. CONTD. FROM PAGE 4Thus most of them are setting up their factories outside Ludhiana. Inthe end he urged community members to strengthen the hands of AAPby donating generously.

Meanwhile, AAP has fielded reputed cardiologist Dr DharamveerGandhi from Patiala who is claimed to have thorough knowledge of theailing state affairs. Experts have claimed the educated youth of Patialawill favor Dharanveer. Gandhi, a noted cardiologist has made the contestmore intriguing. Gandhi is a well-known social activist of the region. Hehas made a name for himself by providing inexpensive treatment to thepeople in the rural areas of Patiala. He is banking on the clean image ofhis party, even as he points out the failures of the Congress and SAD todevelop the region, despite having got so many chances in the past.

Deepinder Dhillon of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is alsoconsidered a strong candidate. Deepinder had turned a rebel and quitthe Congress in 2012 when he was not given the party ticket to contestthe assembly poll.

The Ghaggar, the river that served as one of the lifelines for peoplein the Patiala constituency, now delivers death to them in liberal doses.Heavy pollution has made it a major source of cancer for villagers alongits banks. The number of patients has been on the rise over the years, yet the villagers have no other option but to use water from the river forirrigation and domestic purposes. The Rs 109 crore sewerage line projectfor outer colonies of Patiala remains half-done and the political will tomitigate the problem appears weak.

Patiala, an education and agro-machinery industry hub, may havebeen the stronghold of the Congress for the last 15 years, with PreneetKaur, wife of Patiala royal and former Punjab chief minister CaptAmarinder Singh, having won the contest for three successive termsfrom here, but the party has to try extra hard to convince people on itsseriousness on problems such as Ghaggar to get their votes this time. That Kaur is against an anti-incumbency wave does not help her causeat all.

Patiala parliamentary constituency is marred by poor civic amenitiesin the urban areas. Many of the internal roads are in a dilapidatedcondition and Preneet is finding it hard to explain to the people why thisis so despite her being the MP from the region for all of 15 years. Peopleare also questioning why the city's civic facilities have failed to improvewhen they have been paying heavy taxes all these years. In the ruralareas, lakhs of people living alongside Ghaggar river have been facingproblems every year because of floods. Political leaders have not paidmuch attention to the people's woes and as a result Patiala's 'river ofsorrow' is yet to be tamed. Residents say during every election politicianspromise an end to their woes arising out of the river, but noting concretecomes around once the elections are over.

Preneet has accused the SAD-BJP government of diverting funds

Elections 2014 - Who willwin the battle in PUNJAB ?

allocated to the Patiala constituency to Bathinda district from where theBadal family hails and in the process allowing her region to remainbackward. "I brought in central funds many times and got approved aRs 148 crore project to tame river Ghaggar. Unfortunately the Akalishave been stalling my project," says Preeet Kaur.

On the other hand SAD nominee Deepinder Dhillon has blamedPreneet for her inability to bring any major industrial project to Patialadespite having represented the constituency for the last 15 years. "Wehave been working hard to siden and strengthen the Ghaggar's banksto check annual floods that inundate the region causing loss of livesand farmers' fields," says Deepinder Dhillon.

Interestingly, both SAD and Congress are hoping that AAP willcut into the vote bank of the other. Patiala constituency has a total of15.7 lakh voters.

Bhagwant Mann, one of Punjab's top comedians and the AamAadmi Party candidate in Sangrur, is also discussed a lot in Punjab andPunjabis settled here in Canada. The response has given him confidenceenough to say that his two major opponents, sitting MP Vijay InderSingla of the Congress and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa of the ShiromaniAkali Dal, will forfeit their deposits. "Arvind (Kejriwal) saw all thesepeople at my rallies and told me that we will meet in Parliament," hesays.

MP Vijay Inder Singla, 41, one of Rahul Gandhi's handpicked menin these Lok Sabha polls, dismisses the challenge. "Right from a hospitalto a synthetic turf for our athletes, what I have brought to Sangrur isunprecedented," he says. "People are not blind." On his part, Dhindsa,a former Union minister supported a great deal by four MLAs in this LSconstituency, says it will be an Akali-BJP sweep. No one is taking hisclaims lightly.

From Jalandhar Congress has fielded Santokh Singh Chaudry.Shiromani Akali Dal is facing the heat for announcing Pawan KumarTinu as its candidate. Many community leaders were demanding anotherchance for Hans Raj Hans, who had lost to Congress candidateMohinder Singh Kaypee in the 2009 parliamentary elections from thisseat. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded a school teacher, Jyoti Mann. After Jyoti was announced as the AAP candidate, many people in thecommunity have come to her support. Jalandhar area has a huge NRI

belt and many Indo-Canadians canbe seen right across Punjab duringthe elections.

BSP has gone alone in Punjabwithout any Pre-Poll alliance. These candidates are SukhwinderKotli (Jalandhar), Bha gwan SinghChauhan ( Hoshiar pur), KSMakhan (Anandpur Sahib), RajKumar Prajapati (Ferozepur),Succha Singh Mann (KhadoorSahib), Pardeep Singh Walia(Amritsar), Ram Singh Dhiman(Patiala), Sant Ram Malia(Faridkot), Kuldip Singh(Bathinda), Savjit Singh Khalsa(Fatehgarh Sahib), Navjot SinghJarg (Ludhiana) and SukhwinderSingh Sukh (Gurdaspur).

Claiming an anti-Congress wave in Gurdaspur, BJP candidate fromthis Lok Sabha seat Vinod Khanna today alleged sitting Congress MPPartap Singh Bajwa, his rival in the election, had failed to solve problemsof the people owing to his constant absence from the constituency.

"The anti-incumbency wave against Bajwa is no fiction. Peoplehave not seen him here at all. They are eager to know where their MPwas when they were grappling with their woes," the film-star-turnedpolitician said. Partap Bajwa blamed BJP's prime ministerial candidateNarendra Modi for projecting himself and not the party and also pointedout that all the slogans were centered around him. He said theforthcoming polls were going to be a decisive battle to shape the destinyof people by resolutely confronting the communal forces. He said Punjabburned for more than a decade in the fire of terrorism and Khanna wasnowhere to be seen.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Gurdaspur Sucha SinghChhotepur said that he would highlight corruption, unemployment, economic backwardness, adulteration and drug abuse prevalent inGurdaspur constituency and ask the people to vote for him to get theseproblems solved effectively.

Also, Ambika Soni, Congress candidate from Anandpur Sahib hasurged for more empowerment to women. Among others, BJP's VijaySampla is fighting his first Lok Sabha poll from Hoshiarpur againstCongress MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee.

Ontario Strengthens ImmunizationRequirements for Next School Year

Keeping Children SafeFrom Harmful Diseases

Ontario is helping children and youth stay healthy by requiringtheir immunizations to be up to date before they return to school inSeptember. The province has updated the immunization requirements for the 2014/15 school year to include new mandatory immunizations and doserequirements that align with changes to Ontario's publicly-funded Im-munization Program. All students attending primary or secondary school this fall will need tohave proof of immunization against three more diseases: meningo-coccal disease, whooping cough and --for children born in 2010 orlater -- chickenpox. This is in addition to updated dose requirements fortetanus, diphtheria, polio and mumps immunizations. Requirementsfor measles and rubella immunizations have not changed.Parents should take the following steps to ensure that their childrenmeet the new immunization requirements:1) Double-check with their doctor, nurse practitioner or local publichealth unit to make sure their children's immunization records are upto date.2) Make sure that their child's updated immunization record has beenreported to their local public health unit.Once the school year begins, parents will be contacted by the localpublic health unit if catch-up immunizations are required.Following Ontario's Immunization Schedule and maintaining immuni-zation records are important steps to prevent the spread of these dis-eases in our communities. These diseases can spread easily in schoolsand can lead to serious health consequences especially in children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. ProtectingOntarians from vaccine preventable diseases is part of the Ontario'sAction Plan for Health Care to keep Ontario healthy. It is also part of thegovernment's economic plan that is creating jobs for today andtomorrow by focusing on Ontario's greatest strengths - its peopleand strategic par tnerships. QUICK FACTS" Thanks to vaccines, infectious diseases that were theleading cause of death worldwide 100 years ago are now thecause of less than five per cent of all deaths in Canada." Vaccines for meningococcal disease, whooping coughand chickenpox are publicly funded and par t of Ontario's routineimmunization schedule. They are also consistent with currentclinical guidelines for best protecting Ontario's children fromdisease." The Ontario government currently publicly funds 21different (routine and non-routine) vaccines through its provin-cial immunization program that protect against 16 diseases." Parents of children who require an immunization ex-emption should speak to their local public health unit. Childrenwho are exempt from immunization are at increased risk andmay be removed from school during a disease outbreak.

Conservative GovernmentContinues to Welcome Record

Number of ImmigrantsTORONTO - Each year, Canadabenefits greatly from the talent, hard work, and ideas broughtby newcomers from around theworld. We all know that Canadais the best country in the world, and is a popular destination forvisitors, students, andbusiness travellers. We areproud to announce that Indiawas one of our top sourcecountries in 2013, during whichmore than 130,000 visas wereissued to Indian cit izensvisiting family and friends, andtourists - an increase of 14percent since 2008. Canada alsowelcomed 14,000 students fromIndia in 2013, which is nearlyfour times the 2008 level. Andlastly, more than 33,000 Indiancitizens were admitted aspermanent Canadian residentsin 2013 - a 17 percent increasesince 2008. These trendsreinforce Canada's position asone of the most attractivecountries in the world to visit

or live in.Our Government has a

strong record when it comes toimproving our immigrationsystem. In 2008, the BusinessExpress Program (BEP) wasintroduced to streamline thevisa application process forbusinesses. The WorkerExpress Program, which wasintroduced in India in 2009,provides quicker service toapplicants sent to Canada bycompanies under the BEP. Since2009, more than 7,200 Indiancitizens have benefited from theWorker Express Program.

In July 2011, ourGovernment extended thelength of multiple-entry visasfrom five to ten years. Thisallows visitors to enter and exit

Canada for up to six months ata time over the ten-year period.

The Parent andGrandparent Super Visa, whichis a ten-year, multiple-entryvisa, allows parents andgrandparents to spend longerperiods of t ime in Canadavisiting their families. As ofFebruary 2014, over 31,000Super Visas had been issued, and roughly 97 percent ofeligible applicants wereapproved.

Our Government willcontinue to work hard to ensurethat Canada's immigrationprocess is smooth and efficient, and that Canada remains anattractive destination fornewcomers from around theworld.

We need explanationon Wait times

Since I was appointed by Justin Trudeau to serve at theLiberal Citizenship and Immigration critic I have had a num-ber of exchanges with the government regarding the bal-looning wait times for immigration and citizenship services- all under this Prime Minister's watch. The government's illogical excuse is always the same - that they arecleaning up the Liberal's mess.Never mind that the Conservatives have been in power for eight longyears.Never mind that the numbers showing skyrocketing wait times werethe government's own numbers covering the period 2007-13, whenConservatives, not Liberals, were in power.Never mind that what happened over those years had everything todo with Conservative actions and nothing to do with Liberals.Never mind any of that. It's still the fault of the Liberals, accordingto the government's twisted, magical logic.Mr. Menegakis boasts about plans to reduce wait times for familyclass immigrants and citizen applicants over the next year - buthe is silent on the 208 per cent increase in family class wait timesover the past five years of Conservative government, and equallysilent on the 107 per cent increase in citizenship wait times overthe same period.Given this dismal historical record, why should Canadians be-lieve promises of a sudden turnaround in the lead-up to the nextelection?Sadly, this illogical response to legitimate criticism of thegovernment's own record is typical - all vitriol about a Liberalgovernment eight years gone, and no response at all to rising waittimes under the Conservative watch. The minister of citizenshipand immigration should be concerned. His government is failing byalmost every metric, and he has no response to legitimate criticismof his government's record. The Bank of Canada announced on April 16th, 2014 that it waskeeping its trend-setting overnight lending rate at 1 per cent, where it has been parked since September 2010. The Bankalso published its latest quar terly Monetary Policy Repor t andupdated its economic growth and inflation forecasts. The Bank's global economic growth outlook remains upbeatdespite softer readings in recent months that it attributes to"unusual weather" in the United States earlier in 2014. TheBank still expects that investment and expor ts will outshineconsumer spending as the main driver of Canadian economicgrowth as the United States economic recovery gains momen-tum.While the Bank raised its inflation forecast, it expects the in-crease to be temporary and made it clear that it would notreact by raising rates sooner than previously anticipated. The Bank identified a weaker than expected upturn in expor tsas being the most significant domestic risk to its inflation out-look. It also repeated its concerns about Canadian householdindebtedness while indicating that a soft landing in the Cana-dian housing market and a stabilization of debt-to-income ra-tios continue to unfold in line with its expectations. On balance, the Bank is of the view that interest rates shouldremain where they are and it will continue to monitor eco-nomic and inflation data closely to determine the direction offuture policies. Canadian private sector forecasters widelybelieve that the Bank of Canada will not begin raising the over-night lending rate until well into 2015.As of April 16th, 2014, the adver tised five-year lending ratestood at 4.99 per cent, down from 5.24 per cent at the previousBank rate announcement on March 5th, 2014.The next interest rate announcement will be on June 4th, 2014.The next update to the Monetary Policy Repor t will be on July16th, 2014. IS CONGRESS WORRIED FORRAHUL GANDHI IN AMETHI?

Refrain from makingirresponsible statementsNEW DELHI: BJP's prime ministerial candidate NarendraModi on Tuesday reacted to controversial statements byleaders like Pravin Togadia and Giriraj Singh."Petty statements by those claiming to be BJP's wellwishers are deviating the campaign from the issues ofdevelopment & good governance. I disapprove any suchirresponsible statement and appeal to those makingthem to kindly refrain from doing so," Modi tweeted. While Togadia had repor tedly called for the forcibleeviction of a Muslim family from a Hindu-dominatedlocality, Bihar BJP leader Giriraj Singh had said thatthose who oppose Modi should go to Pakistan as therewill be no place for them in India. On Saturday evening, Togadia joined a group of VHP andBajrang Dal members on a street protest in Bhavnagaroutside a house purchased by a Muslim businessmannear Meghani Circle.

AMETHI: Is the Congress getting the jitters in Amethi, a high-profile constitu-ency long considered a pocket borough of the Gandhis? While no Congress-man openly talks about it, senior leaders concede in private of an "oppositiononslaught" that was "worrying if not frightening".They are emphatic that incumbent MP Rahul Gandhi will win a third term, butthey are haunted by a rare spectre of a narrowed down margin of victory forthe Gandhi scion. And it is not without reason that Rahul's mother and Congress presidentSonia Gandhi held her first election rally in 10 years in Amethi last week.Striking an emotional chord, Gandhi asked people to repose their faith inRahul whom she "gave to them in 2004"."Like Indira ji gave Rajiv ji, my husband, to you many years back, I gaveRahul to you in 2004 and hope your love for him will continue," she said at therally. This is very unlike the Gandhis who in the past have only held a road showprior to the nomination and leave the campaigning to local leaders and Rahul'ssister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The "once-in-a-decade" rally of Sonia Gandhi has caught the attention ofBJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who has since been taunt-ing the first family of Indian politics, saying when Rahul has failed to take careof Amethi, how can he look after the country?"Sonia ji is seeking votes for her son on an emotive note...things are clearhence," Modi said at several rallies in the northeast.

The worry for Congressmen does not seem misplaced too.Considering the near rout of the Congress in Amethi in the 2012 state assem-bly elections, the candidature of Kumar Vishwas by the Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) and Smriti Irani of the BJP has also made the electoral contest tough.Faced with a strong anti-incumbency sentiment across the country, the partyis now worried that the two glib talking contestants would take the sheen offfrom the Congress 'yuvraj'.Leading the charge is poet-turned-politician Kumar Vishwas who has beencamping in Amethi for the last three months, ever since the AAP set its eyeson the VVIP constituency.Having rented a house for himself here, Vishwas calls himself the frontrunnerand says that "history will be written May 16" when the votes are counted."I am the real 'ummeedvaar' from here as people have ummeed (hope) fromme alone," Kumar Vishwas said."He (Rahul Gandhi) has been MP from this place for 10 years, look at thestate of roads and the grim power scenario," he says as a handful of peoplelistening attentively to him clap in agreement. He goes on to attack Rahul's brother-in-law Robert Vadra, saying how Robert'srags-to-riches story was a slap on every sane thinking, law-abiding citizen ofthe country.Worry for the Gandhis, as admitted by Priyanka to close aides, says a source,is also the presence of thousands of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS)activists who are camping in the villages trying to win them over for the BJPcandidate.

shortshortshortshortshortstoriesstoriesstoriesstoriesstoriesNO IMMEDIATE RELIEF FORTARUN TEJPAL, BUT SC AGREESTO HEAR HIS PLEA FOR BAILNEW DELHI: Former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal will have tostay in jail for now as the Supreme Cour t on Monday refused togrant him any immediate relief. However, the apex court agreed to hear his plea for interim bailand issued a notice to Goa government. To allay fears of influencing witnesses, senior advocate HarishSalve appearing for Tejpal, told the apex cour t that if granted bailthe former Tehelka editor will not come to Delhi where the com-plainant and witnesses stay. However, the top cour t said it would not grant any interim orderwithout hearing the prosecution.A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam asked the GoaPolice to file its reply within four weeks.50-year-old Tejpal approached the apex cour t challenging theMarch 14 verdict of the Goa bench of the Bombay high courtwhich had rejected his bail plea.Tejpal has been chargesheeted for allegedly raping, sexuallyharassing and outraging the modesty of a junior colleague dur-ing an event held at a hotel in Goa in November last year. Tejpalwas arrested on November 30, 2013.He has been accused of sexually assaulting the victim on No-vember 7 and repeating the offence the next day.He is currently in judicial custody and lodged at Sada sub-jail inGoa's Vasco town.Tejpal, in his bail petition, stated there were 152 prosecutionwitnesses who have to be cross-examined by the cour t, due towhich the trial is likely to get prolonged fur ther.Tejpal has been chargesheeted under sections 354, 354-A (sexualharassment), 341 and 342 (wrongful restrain), 376 (rape),376(2)(f) (being a person in a position of trust or authority to-wards the woman and rapes her) and 376 (2)(k) (being in aposition of control or dominance over a woman and rapes her)of the IPC.The Goa Police has claimed in the chargesheet that there wassufficient evidence available in the form of documents and state-ments on record to show that Tejpal had been evading policeafter commission of the alleged crime.

Bharatiya Janata Par ty (BJP) prime ministerial candidate NarendraModi on Monday attacked the Samajwadi Par ty (SP), the BahujanSamaj Par ty (BSP) and the Congress for making fun of the poor andraising doubts about a tea seller running this country."It is the people who will teach a lesson to par ties like the SP, BSP andCongress. The minds of this trio have been filled with so much aboutrights that they make fun of the poor. I have no regret with the Al-mighty as to why I was born in a poor and a backward family. Whatpains me is that those big leaders from these three par ties make funand raise doubts about the ability of a tea seller to run this country. The issue is not about me, the issue is about their mindsets. I canboast of selling tea, and at least, I have not sold the country like them. They not only believe in dynastic politics, but also in extended family,as they are including their son-in-law. Can't they even think that peoplefrom outside their family in the society can do any good for the people. They only believe that their daughter and daughter-in-law will only dogood, and therefore, they are insulting the future of Uttar Pradesh,"Modi said at a rally in Hardoi. He attacked Rahul Gandhi for express-ing fake concern about the poor and visiting the poor as if he washeading to a tourist destination."There are people who come to catch a glimpse of Taj Mahal and takesnaps of it, and show it to their kin when they are back home. In asimilar way, Rahul Gandhi visits the poor like a tourist and takesalong with him several cameramen, as he knows nothing about poor,

and hence, sees his visits to their homes as a tourist destination. Inorder to have the best photo oppor tunity, he lifts a poor baby, and eveneats their food, denying them theirs. What will he know about thecondition of poor when he is born with a golden spoon. I know it verywell how one feels in chilling winter when you don't have enough tocover yourself," Modi added."It is the mother and son duo which has finished this country, andsimilarly, it is the father and son duo who have destroyed Uttar Pradesh. You have two types of government here, where the father and son duoattacks Behenji (Mayawati) and vice-versa. Therefore, they do nothave time to look after the welfare of people, and the mother and sonduo only add fire to the tussle between the SP and the BSP. They do notthink at all of the poor or the farmers. Enough is enough, now give mean oppor tunity to serve you," Modi added."I am amazed at the sheer gun culture being practiced in UP. Can thegovernment in Uttar Pradesh give answers to this?," said Modi. Heasked: "How come common people possess more arms than whatthe police carry with them?". He asked the crowd to elect a stronggovernment, as they had already seen the misgovernance of all otherpar ties, be it in UP or at the Centre."Tell me something that the SP, BSP and the Congress ruled you for somany years. Do you want to still face the hardships which your par-ents had to face. If you want change in your lives, then, you mustreplace the government in Delhi.

Missing Jet OfficialsMull RevampingFruitless Search Efforts

Authorities overseeing a fruitless-so-farunderwater hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370are pondering an overhaul of search efforts asrelatives of passengers balk at the suggestion theyshould begin compensation negotiations withoutseeing evidence it actually crashed

As the Bluefin-21 unmanned submarine completed its eighthmission to look for wreckage from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370on Monday, having already scoured two-thirds of the 121 sq.mi. (314 sq km) focused search area, authorities in Australiaare mulling whether to adjust or roll back effor ts.MH 370 vanished soon after taking off from Kuala Lumpur boundfor Beijing early on March 8 with 239 people on board, anddespite an intensive air, surface, satellite and underwater search, not a single item connected with the errant Boeing 777 has sofar been found.Australia’s Ambassador to the U.S. Kim Beazley told CNN thatthe multinational search team would “regroup and reconsider”if nothing is discovered on the section of the southern IndianOcean seabed currently being scanned by U.S.-made sonar-equipped autonomous underwater drone. “You may well alsoconsider bringing in other underwater search equipment,” hesaid. “All these sor ts of things will be on the table if nothing isfound in the next few days.”Six weeks after the twin-engine jet disappeared, it is increas-ingly unlikely that any debris would still be afloat, and officialshave already suggested calling off air and sur face operation.“Obviously that’s one of the things you’re going to consider,”said Beazley.Officials believe the 11-year-old plane crashed somewhere inthe southern Indian Ocean based on analysis of data communi-cations, although even this may be re-examined if nothing is discoveredsoon. Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had told re-porters in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday that the fruitless weekend search wascrucial. “The narrowing of the search for today and tomorrow is at a verycritical juncture, so I appeal to everybody around the world to pray andpray hard that we find something to work on over the next coupleof days,” he said.

Churning the "slice of life" genreof movie making is notsomething new in Bollywoodand it's been time and againwhen we have seen ourIndustryvalas putting in theirstirring apparatus in the genre toget something desirable out ofit. Be it about paintingsomething pertaining to "love inthe time of recession" , "life inmetros", "sperm donation" orsomething as sensitive as "inter-caste marriage", ourBollywooders at the power oftheir connoisseur vision alwaysmanage to come with a modernday cine idea belonging to thecine-ilk of "slice of life".And this time its cross culturalor rather inter-regional, inter-caste marriage which has alluredSajid Nadiadwala & K.Jo, whohave come up with a cine offeringbased on the bestselling novel"2 States" of the ace novelist,Chetan Bhagat, with the themeof cross- culture or inter-castemarriage being at the centre ofthe business. Well this is not forthe first time that any of theBollywooders have tried toexperiment with this genre. If weturn back the leaves of Indian

cine history then Bollywood'sassociation with somewhatsimilar story-line dates back to80's, when Kamal Haassan andRati Agnihotri starrer 'Ek Duje KeLiye", where a South Indian ladfalls for a North Indian girl, madeit to cine world. But after seeing,`2 States", it looks like with a shiftin the era, even the concept ofinter-caste love and marriage has

taken an altogether differentshape. On one hand where "EkDuje Ke Liye" banked heavilyupon the plight and agony oflovers, its 21st century versioni.e. "2 States" not only differsfrom the spirit of its predecessor, but also introduces viewers to anew perspective pertaining tointer-caste or cross cultural loveaffair and marriage. Based uponthe bestselling novel of ChetanBhagat, `2 States", truly re-introduces us to a usually seenreality of North-south divide, where for North Indians, everySouth Indian is a "MADRASI"and for every South Indian,North Indians are nothing morethan the boastful exhibitionists.Besides this what "2 States"communicates with conviction isthat, in Indian culture marriageis a ceremony which takes placebetween families & not justbetween a boy and a girl, therefore making certain factsmandatory. Firstly girl's familymust have a liking for boy, secondly boy's family must haveliking for girl and thirdly, but mostimportantly girl's family musthave a liking for boy's family andvice-versa. And after that if anyquota of liking and love remainsin hand, only then the love birdsshould proceed ahead with theirforemost desire of tying thenuptial knot. Anyhow unfurlingthe premise of the movie, `2States" primarily pertains to thetwisty- twirly love jaunt of cupidbitten lovers, Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) and AnanyaSwaminathan who after havinga rendezvous at IIM-Ahemdabad fall in love with eachother. With frames rolling aheadthe duo decides to tie the nuptialknot, but the only hitch in thisnoble mission of theirs are theirrespective family backgrounds, where Krish is from North IndianPunjabi family, whereas Ananyabelongs to a Tamil Brahamincommunity. And what follows

next is the cultural clash betweentheir parents. So what happenssubsequently, does Krish andAnanya succeed in convincingtheir sweetie rebels i.e. theirparents and make their lovetriumph, or do they lose it todestiny, to know watch "2States". Because of "2 States"being a cine narration based onthe best seller "2 States" anautobiographical eponymousaccount of Chetan Bhagat, thereremains very less scope to gaugethe enveloping appeal of thestory-line. But yes one thingwhich stands-out as a fact isthat, while dealing with asomewhat generic issue, Chetanhas prudently succeeded inembossing a diverse range ofsocio-cultural & emotionalvariables, on the story to make itan assimilating reading orviewing experience. As far asmesmerizing captivatingpotency of "2 States" while itsbeing on big screen isconcerned, then for thatperspective entire credit goes tomovie's director and screenplaywriter, Abhishek Varman, whohas not only kept every minutestdetail pertaining to culturaldiversity, emotionalexpressiveness etc under tabs, but at the same time has adroitlymanaged to keep the spirit ofBhagat's best seller alive. If wetalk about the shifts in the timeperiods, flow of narration, andeven liaison and affinity ofonscreen characters then eventhat packaging of "2 States" isso dauntless and neat, that yousomewhere sub- consciouslystats empathizing with theonscreen proceedings. With hisexemplary cinematographicadeptness, Binod Pradhan hascaptured milieu and every relevantdetail associated with the narrationwith paramount excellence. Bydexterous use of her editing skills,Namrata Rao further contributes tothe win-win score of "2 States".

Chetan Bhagat Whose Novel 2 States Goes Into A MovieAdaptation This Week Speaks To Subhash K Jha...Another movie adaptation of your novel, this one very close to home. How much of your true-life love story has the film managed tocapture?Yes indeed, 2 States is quite close to me because the inspirationcame from my own life. The key plot points are from my life butthere is fictionalization and drama added as well. Hence, technically it is Krish and Ananya's story in the book and Ithink the film has captured that quite well. How much of your romantic and marital life would we see in 2States?Not much of my martial life, as the film ends with the couplegetting married. It is also more a 'how to convince family' storyso even the romantic bits are limited. How different is 2 States from other Tamil-North Indian lovestories like Ek Duuje Ke liye and Gori Tere Pyar Mein?MEk Duuje Ke Liye is a classic from the 80s. In that film, there isactually violent resistance to the match. In 2 States, a moremodern take, the parents are not going to beat you up. Theyare just not on board to accept the match. 2 States is aboutwinning them over, not fighting them.Alia Bhatt has lately come into mammoth acclaim for herperformance in Highway. She has apparently used your wife'sdress sense and demeanour as a reference point in 2 States. How far has she succeeded in bringing alive the character?Alia is to put it in one word ,extraordinary. In every frame of 2States she captivates you in her role as Ananya. It is a tough part, with the girl she is playing being an intelligent MBA student and acorporate type later. It limits the jumping around one can do as typicalof Bollywood films. Yet, Alia captivates. That is her achievement.
