President’s Letter

It’s weird writing this note before Christmas for you to receive after the holidays are over! That being said, I hope your holidays were filled with fun and good cheer. I love the Christmas holidays, but it’s always good to put decorations away and get my minis out of storage. I love remembering where my minis came from – what I made, where I bought something, and the good times and friends that came with them.

On a serious note, what will happen to your miniatures when you are gone? Two family members that enjoyed what I made/bought and liked to hear about them – one was my brother-in-law, Steve, who died a couple of years ago and my now eight year old granddaughter who is now more interested in things other than grandma’s miniatures. I have a letter with my will instructing my family to let Midwest Miniature Guild have anything that my family doesn’t want. Wouldn’t you rather know that miniaturists are enjoying your “treasurers” instead of being left on the curb for Goodwill to pick up?

On a happier note, it’s 2017. A new year for us with great classes and opportunities for MMG members. The Guild is only as strong as our member involvement. What can you contribute? Attend, yes, and have a good time supporting our hobby. Other ways to get more involved:

• Join the MMG board or be a helper. We need: a vice president (not necessarily to become president, but would be nice!); newsletter helper, library helper and helping at meeting lunches. Ask any Board member for more information. What else do you see where the Guild needs help?

• Teach a class! It’s fun and a great experience. Need help? Have ideas? Remember, scholarships are available – even after you’ve taken a class that you enjoyed.

• State Fair – we would like to participate again. It’s a great way to show off our hobby and bring in new members. Ideas, displays, mini instructors needed.

• Mini Parade of Homes – we still need members to show off their minis and their work spaces and attendees. Please let Freya Jacobson know if you are interested! [email protected]

• New Member Luncheon will be held this spring. It’s a great way to meet each other and find common interests.

All for now, I hope to see you all in February, Jane

SHABBY CHIC, ANYONE? By Mary Breslin

Styles come and go, but shabby chic is a perennial favorite in miniatures and in full scale, too. Some shabby chic is shabbier than others, and some to my eye aren’t shabby at all. There are some elements in common, though.

Wikipedia also mentions common design elements like florals – especially roses - and appliques for furniture, featuring cherubs, flower swags and garlands. Although many of the shabby chic images I’ve seen evoke the Victorian era, there are definitely some other styles out there, including a country shabby chic and variations that take elements from various countries, like France.

Pinterest and Etsy are brimming with shabby chic photos of miniature creations (just google “shabby chic in miniature”.) You’ll find nearly every room in the house represented. Maybe you have an idea for a workshop featuring the shabby chic style? Send me an email [email protected]. Or maybe you have a piece you’ve created in this style, and would like to share it at the February meeting? In any case, I hope you enjoyed this brief tour of the style.

From the Board continues on page 7

One is color palette. There’s even a company that created a set of colors. This palette was created by Rachel Ashwell, who may be the creator of the style and whose product line features chalk and clay paints in this palette. (If you have a black and white copy of the newsletter, you can see Rachel’s color palette on her website: http://rachelashwellshabbychicpaint.com/2016/12/the-tried-and-true-palette-from-the-world-of-shabby-chic/ ) You can see that the colors lean toward muted blues and browns, with white, pink and green rounding out the palette.

Another element that shabby chic aficionados seem to agree upon is that there needs to be a shabby element. Wikipedia says: “Shabby chic is a form of interior design where furniture and furnishings are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique.”

MIDWEST MINIATURE GUILD GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES

Shoreview Community Center, October 1, 2016

The Meeting was called to order at 12:35 by President Jane Sanem.

The members of the Guild were welcomed to the meeting.

Two members were given $10.00 gift certificates for good Ideas. Ruth Hynes suggested ringing a bell for the start of classes. Freya Jacobson suggested a Mini Parade of Homes.

Ten members have volunteered to open their homes to show their miniatures in a “Mini” Parade of Homes. This would be a commitment of opening their homes for a couple of hours. The plan is to charge a small fee to view homes and to have an activity at each home. There is still time for more members to volunteer.

Joan Myers refurbished a house that was donated by Joyce Beytien. Joan came to the podium and talked about her project. The house was donated to a women’s shelter in Eagan for the children’s playroom. Some of the furniture was donated and some was purchased. Joan estimated the cost of her project to be approximately $60.00. Pictures of the project were on display at the meeting.

A friend of Mary Breslin donated a dollhouse for renovation. It will be taken home by Priscilla Scott (a new member). Priscilla told us that she had experienced the loss of loved ones and then began giving away dollhouses to others struggling with sadness and tragedy in their lives. She gives the homes to individuals and groups – from families healing from violence to residents of nursing homes.

There are magazines for sale today. The price this afternoon will be .50 cents for a dozen. Angela May won a prize for checking out a book. Mary Breslin won a prize for returning a book. Brad still needs an assistant. Sue Taylor encouraged anyone that might be thinking of volunteering for a board position to come forward and give it a try because it can be a fun experience.

Mary Breslin asked for volunteers to teach classes for the next 3 meetings (Feb, May and Oct 2017).

Cherie’ Mattson asked that members send a card or call Alice Roberts. Her husband has cancer and is very ill.

Thank-you to Irma Escue for her Silent Auction donation of Halloween items for a silent auction. The winning bidder is Jan Rasmussen.

New Members – Susan George, Priscilla Scott and Betsy Philips Wolford were introduced.

Returning members – Karinna Gosmann (junior member), Lisa Ketchmark and Sarah Peterson were introduced.

Guests – Ashley Meyers (Granddaughter of Peggy Meyers) and Priscilla Scott (guest of Jean Johnson) were introduced.

Thank you to Beth Grabau for the miniature slippers and blankets that are today’s table favors.

Thank you to Carol Blanchfield for the Celebration Birdcages that are today’s centerpieces, and to her helpers: Vera Sullivan, Carol Sherry, Mary Breslin and Sue Taylor.

The winning number for centerpieces was the number “four”. One table only had 3 people and the winning number was “two”.

Door prizes were given away.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m.

Submitted by Sue Taylor, Secretary

At the February Meeting (Continued from page 5)

CHARITY RAFFLE Our February charity is Stepping Stone Emergency Housing sponsored by Gina Sanderson. Once again, we’ll have three

raffle prizes for members who contribute money or goods - one ticket for every dollar or item contributed.

I'm just back from my first visit to Stepping Stone Emergency Housing, moved as I never could have been had I just read about it. It is Anoka County's only homeless shelter, a small 66-bed building in a parklike setting. Stepping Stone offers shelter to single men and women (18 and older) in 8-bed dormitory-style bedrooms. Three meals a day and snacks are provided, mostly donated by local businesses, schools, and churches. Volunteers deliver the food, and residents do everything else--prepare the food, serve it, clean up afterward. Through a work training program, residents participate in both kitchen and janitorial duties throughout the building and grounds.

Residents are administered to in every conceivable way, body, mind, and spirit. There is a gym, a recreation area, a library, a computer room, a medical examination room--and a classroom, for learning the skills needed not only to find employment, but to explore ways to further their formal education. Residents also learn about health, finances, library resources, and computer technology. Three community organizations collaborate with Stepping Stone to offer this educational program: the Anoka County Library, MetroNorth Adult Basic Education, and WorkForce Center.

Each resident has the regular attention of a Shelter Advocate who makes sure all immediate needs are met, and a Case Manager, who works with the resident to develop a comprehensive individual goal plan. Stepping Stone truly understands that meeting physical needs is only the beginning. The Stepping Stone staff commits to getting to know each person, and to explore with each what would create a fulfilled life. And that's only the beginning. They help residents forge a plan for attaining their goals, and mentor them as they take action on each step of the plan.

Allina Health Care professionals volunteer to offer residents free monthly medical care, and dental professionals volunteer free dental services to residents every other month. A caring chiropractor even offers her services twice a month. As Anoka County Commissioner Scott Schulte observed in recognition of these services, "When people receive treatment for their health care issues, they are more likely to be able to handle other problems in their lives."

There is always a waiting list of from 50 to 100 names. So great is the need! Over 60% of the residents suffer some form of mental illness, which makes their situation especially challenging and their entire independence unlikely. Two thirds of the residents are men. When I asked about this imbalance, I was told that women more often stay with family and friends. Do women have better heart connections? Ask more readily for what they need?

Stepping Stone received the MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce 2015 award for Excellence in Business, nonprofit category. For their continuance, they will always need just about everything--money, volunteers, goods. The facility is small and storage is at a premium, so they are not accepting clothing donations at the moment, but here's what they do need:

• Comfortable walking shoes (gently used, in all sizes)

• Office copy paper • Socks, underwear and white undershirts/t-shirts (new)

• Deodorant • Pillows (new) • Toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss

• Extra-long twin sheet sets • Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body lotion (all full-sized)

• Towels and washcloths

• Hangers • Shaving razors • Women's feminine hygiene products

Money or checks made out to Stepping Stone Emergency Housing are also much appreciated.

FAIRY DOORS IN ANN ARBOR By Sue Taylor

I am always interested in ways to share my love of miniatures with others. While visiting Ann Arbor, Michigan I discovered “fairy doors” all around the town. They are inside and outside, high and low. Some doors are very fancy and have rooms that can be seen through the windows and others are very simple. Even if a person might not be a fan of all things “fairy” who can’t appreciate the architecture of a lovely miniature door.

One of my favorite fairy doors is installed on the end of a bookshelf at the public library (in the section that includes Fairytales and Folklore). Another is in the Children’s Hospital – what a simple way to make a child smile! Sometimes admirers leave small gifts and candy for the fairies.

The fairy doors have been in Ann Arbor for many years and they are now showing up in other towns and cities. Perhaps they will show up in your town!
