President’s Letter August, 2018

Hello, I purposely waited to write this (thanks for the extension, Jan!) until the Minneapolis Dollhouse & Miniature Show had ended, just in case I gleaned some good stuff from the Show. So glad I waited.

If you attended, thank you! If you weren’t able to attend, you missed a good show and a great start to hopefully a yearly event. The energy was felt in the room. Such a good way for our members to connect.

I was very pleased with how the show turned out! The show promoter, Teresa Zweiner, was pleased; the vendors (more than half were MMG members) were pleased; and the attendees seemed very pleased. Some attendees left with big bags, and came back on Saturday. Your ticket to attend included a return visit on Saturday. Several vendors had to be turned away because space was sold out.

The 2019 show date is set and vendors are already signing up. See our event calendar for date and new location.

A special thank you to Priscilla Scott who got the word out about the show online. There were about 185 attendees and about half were non-MMG members. We have several people interested in the Guild.

Lynn Snyder spotted an item that might make a great group project. Good eye, Lynn! More on this to come.

Thanks to our Board Members who helped staff the Guild table. What a great Board we have!

The Guild table was very active. We had a free member drawing. Winners were: the three piece furniture set (Jack Anderson), room box (Cory Mohwinkel) and wine accessories (Kathy Goettsch). Carol Blanchfield put together 50 mini gift bags with a small mini item and a Guild business card for non-Guild members. We ran out of gift bags around noon on Saturday. We also had many mini magazines to give away. Thanks to Betty Tarr for the magazine donation.

We emailed $1.00 discount coupons to members to use on the $5.00 admission price. 26 members used a discount coupon. The Guild Board thought it was money well spent to help our members and the new show.

Workshops were held before the show on Friday and Saturday. I took the doll class (along with 5 other Guild members) and enjoyed it. Of course, my doll isn’t finished but I will finish it. Dana Burton was the teacher, you may have seen her doll tutorials in America Miniaturist Magazine recently. Dana is from Sheboygan, WI and will come to teach a class, if we want.

Of course, the show is not Chicago International but I’m thrilled with the good start. It’s been a long time since Tom Bishop would come to Minneapolis and several years since Little Enchantments and other miniature shops are no longer around. Miniaturists need energy and camaraderie and the show provided that – if even for just two days!

The Meeting was called to order by President, Jane Sanem

Welcome back to Connie Eckert and Dureen Ruff (D. Anne Ruff). Also, welcome to JoAnne Lorenz who came as a guest today and has rejoined the Guild.

Welcome to Samantha Anderson who is the granddaughter and guest of Jack Anderson.

Amanda Maricle is the owner of Minnesota Miniatures Market. Amanda has recently joined the Guild and is a vendor today.

Dave Thorsen from Klohned is also at our meeting. Klohned does 3D printing of miniature scale figurines He can create realistic models to compliment miniature scenes.

Participants in the Trash-to-Treasure contest were judged by the members of the Guild. All contestants received participation ribbons. The three prize winners were Joan Myers (Reading Room), Sandy Fish (Tree Woodland Animals) and Carol Blanchfield (Laundry Sink). Carol was the first place winner and was presented with a special “tiara”.

The Charity today was Loaves and Fishes. Patti Sinykin (Director of Development) and Lonny Evans (Director of Volunteers & Outreach) were invited to our meeting by Gina Sanderson. Loaves and Fishes has been operating for 36 years. They support 26 dining sites in our area and place an emphasis on good nutrition.

Winners of the charity raffle were Helen Terzian, Deb Nelson and Jane Sanem.

Carol Blanchfield won a prize for returning a book to the library.

Betty Beskau won a prize for checking out a book from the library.

There were 5 door prizes. The winners were Suzanne Nelson, Vera Sullivan, Janice Krahn, Betty Beskau and JoAnn McCracken.

The Spring Garden Centerpieces were created by Karen Fernholz. The table favors were gathered by Carol Blanchfield. Tables numbered off and the winning number for centerpieces was #5.

Members were encouraged to pick up member rosters and “Tips, Tricks and Techniques” at the registration table if they haven’t done so already.

The Guild is always looking for workshop teachers. If anyone would like to teach but doesn’t have a project, please talk to Joan Purcell. The Guild will buy kits for you to teach – the teacher’s kit is free.

Kathy Goettsch asked for a discussion regarding plans for a future miniature museum. Members that spoke up felt that money would be better spent on a group project or reduced membership fees. There was interest in doing a project similar to ” The Secret Garden” and “Guilderville” projects that were completed by Guild members in the past.

Other ideas members suggested for the money were a bus trip to the Chicago show, an online museum or a traveling museum.

A request was made to include a treasurer’s report in the newsletters. It was agreed that the treasurer’s report will be included in the newsletters.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:05 pm.

OUR OCTOBER CHARITY

We miniaturists often include animals in our scenes. As they do in life, animals help create feelings of love, companionship and whimsy in our miniatures. Here is a chance for us to support animals in the world at large.

AHS cares for more than 23,000 animals every year; 95% find a new home. AHS is an independent nonprofit organization serving Minnesota, and is not associated with any national group. AHS receives no city, state or federal financial aid. They raise funds through events, donations, events, adoptions fees and from merchandise sales.

Tickets are $1.00 each to enter raffles for marvelous miniature prizes. Tickets will be available at the desk at the meeting.

TRASH TO TREASURE CONTEST Our first ever, Trash to Treasure Contest happened at the May meeting. Members chose at least five items from the free table at the February meeting. They had to bring back their creations for the May meeting. Members had to use their five items from the free table plus whatever else they wanted. It was a blind judging. Attendees received a ticket to vote for their winner. Our eight contestants did a wonderful job! And (drum roll) our top three winners are: 1.) Carol Blanchfield; 2.) Joan Myers; and 3.) Sandy Fish. Pictures of all contestants and their creations are included. Thanks to Freya Jacobson for setting up and overseeing the contest. We’ll definitely have another Trash to Treasure Contest!
