FOREWORD

This directory is a timely contribution to an ever-changing picture of new neighbours coming to live amongst us throughout this island. Some stay for a short time, some have already put down roots, some want to stay but are not allowed to. Each carries a unique story. Each brings a unique contribution to share with those who have lived here much longer.

Many of our new neighbours come from strong church-going backgrounds and look for an identity with their homeland that helps them make the huge adjustment to living in a new country with different languages, different customs, different weather and different ways of being church. Many are just bringing back the gift of the Gospel that Irish missionaries brought out to their forebears. Many are also adding to the significant growth taking place within Irish indigenous churches.

And so, new churches have emerged alongside the more traditional ones that we are familiar with in our neighbourhoods. These have grown at a phenomenal rate since the 1990s, and it is a tribute to those who have seen the need to document these changes, those who have funded the project and those who have undertaken the research, that this directory is now available in printed form.

Its aim is to provide a centralised database and resource for new migrants, community groups, established Irish churches and the wider community on this island. It has been the policy of the editors to include in this directory any relevant bodies who identify themselves as Christian churches. This does not imply either that these churches themselves, or other churches who will make use of the directory, will always be able to regard one another as churches in the true and full sense of the word. The directory is, however, an attempt to encourage all churches to develop a broader awareness of the scope of contemporary Christian worship and witness in Ireland, and wherever possible, to build living relationships with those around them who confess Jesus Christ as Lord. Its focus is on migrant leadership and majority migrant congregations. It does not include integrated churches or inter-cultural congregations that are documented elsewhere.1 It serves as a mapping exercise to raise Irish awareness of the extraordinary changes taking place in their midst and of the growing research and understanding about ethnic, parallel and intercultural congregations that are developing in our local neighbourhoods. This language is new and fast changing.

There is a view that increasing secularisation is forcing many church buildings to close on this island, but here is evidence of over 361 new local faith communities, congregations and chaplaincies being run by migrants and for migrants, bringing new life to our ecclesiological landscape. This new life is very diverse and may find expression in either existing or unused church facilities for worship. Meeting places may also be found in private homes or in spaces rented (often at huge cost) in hotels, community centres, business parks and industrial estates. Cost factors force many of these groups to be transient, flexible and as mobile as pilgrim people, while a few have already purpose-built centres. Some are much larger and better resourced than others.

One church, for instance, has already opened seventy-three new congregations on this island over the last ten years. Each has its own story. Each adds enthusiasm, richness and vibrancy in celebrating worship in its own particular faith tradition.

This directory is by no means complete in recording the presence of all the migrant-led churches, chaplaincies and house groups on this island. Some have preferred to remain informal and not publicise their existence, others may not be aware of the extensive efforts made to contact them. The directory can only hope to provide a snapshot of this new phenomenon - and acknowledge that there remain gaps. Efforts will be made by the organisers to update the directory with information about new Irish churches on the inter-church website at www.irishchurches.org

I can well remember participating a few summers ago in an all-night African Pentecostal service at the Point Theatre in Dublin. Attended by over 7,000 Africans, the service of praise and thanksgiving started at 7 pm, the sermon began after midnight, and it was followed by a time of healing, further music and time of praising God until we finished at 5.30 am. I felt I was in downtown Lagos as the Lord’s name was honoured African-style and spiritual energy just pumped out.

Soon afterwards I was with a group of Orthodox Christians in North Belfast, as they celebrated their liturgy in a variety of languages - English, Arabic, Greek, Romanian and Slavonic.Their worship style lies within the Holiness tradition with its ancient prayers, icons and litanies that emerged from the earliest Christian church established by St Peter and St Paul in 33 AD in Antioch. It was most moving to be reminded of the traditions dating from our Lord’s time before all the major doctrinal schisms that split the Church up into the hundreds of Christian denominations and groupings that we know today.

These Orthodox and African Pentecostal worship styles may both be new in Ireland but have long traditions overseas. They are gifts to complement the styles of worship we are familiar with in our own cultural context.

This directory provides a snapshot of this new landscape, but a snapshot is, by definition, a temporary feature that quickly becomes out of date. Within the next generation, Irish society will have changed; the language used in this directory will have changed; the children of migrant families will have grown up and faced the many challenges of having dual cultural identities; and new forms of relationships will have developed between the new and indigenous churches and chaplaincies that will have either moved us further apart or brought us closer together. The future will be shaped by the decisions that are taken now and by the faithfulness shown to the Gospel commandment ‘to love our neighbours as we love ourselves’ (Mark 12.33). So I invite everyone reading this directory to make contact this week and build up relations with a new church near you. The directory will have served its purpose if it has been a tool to help us do just that.

AICCMR INTRODUCTION

The AICCMR is part of the Irish Inter-Church Meeting which has 16 member churches (see www.irishchurches.org for information). Founded in 2002, AICCMR has organised many local networking meetings, worship events reflecting the variety of Christian worship styles new to Ireland, and in November 2005 a major church conference on racism. It has published works on Christian approaches to migration, including The experiences, expectations and aspirations of black and minority ethnic people in relation to the churches’ role in tackling racism (2005) and Intercultural Insights (2008).

AICCMR brings together church representatives, from both the Republic and Northern Ireland, in looking at issues of churches, racism, migration and interculturalism on an all-island and larger framework; it aims to complement the work being done by other Christian agencies working in the field.

The AICCMR developed this directory primarily as a resource for migrants, visitors to Ireland, the media, community groups, Christian churches and service providers. It includes information on the religious lives of Christian migrants in Ireland and on the nature of their contribution to the religious life of the country. The research focused on churches and chaplaincies where migrants were leaders and where their congregations were migrant majority.

The research was carried out by Dr Livingstone Thompson and Dr Alan Bruce in the Republic of Ireland, and by Dr Scott Boldt and his team of Yvonne Naylor, Rob Fairmichael and Naomi Brown in Northern Ireland. Both teams went to extraordinary lengths to complete the task, and we would like to thank those churches and chaplaincies that took the time to participate so fully in the research. Some of the research gathered hasn’t been included in this publication or in the online directory, but there are plans for a broader academic publication in the future. Certainly, the enormity of the research leaves the door open for a wide variety of strands to emerge, which hopefully this directory will stimulate in due course.

Special thanks to Philip McKinley, whose perseverance ensured that the directory was completed on time. Sincere thanks are also due to Máire Ní Chearbhaill for her excellent editing work, and to Chris Conville for overseeing design and publication. The AICCMR would also like to formally thank the following for their financial support: the European Regional Development Fund, the Community Bridges Project of the International Fund for Ireland, the Church of Ireland Hard Gospel Project, Edgehill Reconciliation Project, Presbyterian Board of Mission in Ireland, and the Irish Bishops’ Refugee and Migrant Project.

Republic of Ireland Research Background

Introduction

The 2006 Census of Population showed a detailed profile by religious affiliation of the major migrant groups and communities from among the 188 nationalities that now constitute the over 440,000 immigrants in the Republic of Ireland.

Members of migrant-led churches are primarily listed in the census under the ‘Apostolic or Pentecostal’ classification. Those listed in the ‘Apostolic or Pentecostal’ category show a 158 per cent increase over 2002, reflecting a growth in numbers from 3,152 in the 2002 census to 8,116 in the 2006 census. While all the churches recorded increased numbers during the 2002 to 2006 period, the most significant percentage growth took place in the new migrant-led churches. However, percentage changes in these figures need to be considered in conjunction with the actual increase in numbers. For example, although the Roman Catholic Church experienced only a 6 per cent increase, in numerical terms, that represented 218,000 persons - significantly beyond what any of the other groups added.

To keep pace with these increasing numbers and internal changes, provision must therefore be made for regular and ongoing updating of the data, which would otherwise rapidly become obsolete. The scale, rapidity and nature of these demographic changes are unique in Europe. They provide the backdrop for the extraordinary religious transformations occurring within and between all denominations.

Figures for 2008 already seem to be at variance with those recorded in the 2006 census. According to the 2006 figures, there were some 8,000 persons listed in the State as being members of ‘Apostolic or Pentecostal’ religious groupings. However, in one conference of the Redeemed Church of God alone in 2008, there were 12,000 persons in attendance.2 This suggests that some of the official figures may be already obsolete and that there is extensive dynamism and religious activity in religious communities in general, in Pentecostal communities in particular. The extent of this religious activity is illustrated by the fact that the rate of increase in Pentecostal membership between 2002 and 2006 was well beyond the rate in the population as a whole. The number of churches and chaplaincies that have been established in the last decade also reveals the extent of such activity.

Although the 2006 Census disaggregated and evaluated its data according to religions and migrants separately, and is able to provide data on migrate involvement in religion, it did not include information on religious leadership. The purpose of the AICCMR research was simply to tabulate the instances where migrants were providing leadership in the churches under review rather than to assess the quality of such leadership.

AICCMR INTRODUCTION

Research Context

The gathering of data for the directory revealed that there are several existing directories of churches, many of which are accessible on line.3 There is considerable overlap between these directories, however none attempts to provide data specifically on migrant churches and chaplaincies. The Irish Council of Churches (ICC) research by Femi Olayisade (2002) concentrated on the major groupings among the migrant churches and provided significant background material on the rapid growth and nature of migrant religious experience in Ireland. However, it is now dated and, in its focus, lacked the comprehensive nature and investigation of the information that the AICCMR was seeking to obtain. For example, whereas the ICC research listed 17 churches under the ‘Redeemed Christian Church of God’ (RCCG), this research shows that the number of these churches in 2008 stands at 73.

Methodology

Given the need for the churches themselves to accept the notion of being migrant-led, a questionnaire with an explanatory letter was prepared and disseminated by hand and by regular mail, with a self-addressed return envelope, to all known, researched or suggested contacts. The process was repeated using electronic means (e-mail). Preparation of the questionnaire was an important aspect of the methodology. It provided the main fields into which the data would be organised and stored.

Contact details and addresses were accessed via websites, existing directories, networks, known groups of churches, international links and individuals. Visits were also made to several towns and cities to establish new and previously unknown contacts. Telephone calls were then made to verify and expand received data. Information was obtained from Christian contact points, resource centres and bookshops. A wide-ranging set of interviews and discussions were held with a variety of respondents around the country.

The researchers believe that, whereas some churches could have been missed in this process, the directory list presented here is generally an accurate picture of the number of migrant-led churches and chaplaincies as currently exists in the Republic of Ireland. In a few cases, the data presented does not include specific address or contact details for the church mentioned. In these instances, the researchers were not able to corroborate independently the continuing existence of the church in the originally identified location or the specific data recorded relating to them. Evidence indicated that many of these religious formations were quite fluid and evolving in terms of location, personnel, mission and outreach. The work involved in gathering the data presented here can be built on through the online directory (www.irishchurches.org) that will allow for regular updating as new churches are established or re-formed.

The term ‘migrant-led’ presented both the researchers and respondents with some difficulty. There were a number of churches that have significant numbers of migrants among their membership

3 E.g. www.tippfellowship.org, www.aontas.ie

as well as in leadership that found the notion too exclusive. For this reason the decision had to be made in what cases the church or chaplaincy would be called ‘migrant-led’ when the leadership or respondent was not prepared to accept the designation as relevant. While some churches had been originally established by migrants, they now had local leadership and/or saw themselves as indigenous formations, even if their congregations were still overwhelmingly migrant. The types of migrant-led churches identified can be categorised as follows:

a) churches with total migrant populations that have their headquarters overseas (usually in Africa); b) churches with total migrant populations that were inaugurated in Ireland and therefore have no outside point of reference; c) churches whose leaders also included Irish nationals but where the congregation was comprised primarily of migrants. The inflow of migrants often transformed pre-existing host congregations, thus changing the direction, focus and priorities of the ministry of church.

The researchers also further defined the scope and terminology of ‘migrant-led chaplaincies’. In the data presented here, migrant-led chaplaincies are referred to as:

a) chaplaincies within traditional churches where a non-migrant national serves the national grouping in a language other than English. This is specifically the case, for example, with the Brazilian Roman Catholic chaplaincies;b) chaplaincies that are led by migrants who deliver services in the main language of the migrant group, as in the case of several of the Polish chaplaincies. The scope, nature, scale and resources of the Polish chaplaincies were particularly noted in this research. They were organised throughout Irish dioceses and had, for example, strong web-presence and communication channels. Chaplaincies are primarily found in churches that are long established and have a formally ordained ministry.

Directory Overview

The data for the Republic of Ireland in this directory lists 327 migrant-led churches and chaplaincies. Of that number, 243 represent congregations of migrant-led independent or grouped churches. The remainder (84) represents chaplaincies where services are held for or by migrants in a language other than English. Most of the migrant-led churches are located in the major towns, consistent with the concentration of migrant figures shown in the 2006 census. They are often situated in business parks and industrial estates, community centres or private locations. Others meet in hotels or share facilities with other churches.

Most of the migrant-led initiatives are in Dublin, but there are significant concentrations in locations such as Louth, Galway, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Limerick and Clare. The mobility of the migrant-led churches is evident from the fact that some have changed their location even within the time of the research. This flexibility stems primarily from the fact that the leaders want to find a secure, accessible and pleasant location without having to acquire the property, the cost of which may be prohibitive.

DIRECTORY OF MIGRANT-LED CHURCHES & CHAPLAINCIES8

AICCMR INTRODUCTION

While nearly all the chaplaincies conduct services in languages other than English, with Polish and Portuguese being the most common, services in migrant-led churches are held primarily in English. There are only a few instances where there are services in two languages. For example, within a few of the Celestial and the Cherubim and Seraphim Churches, Yoruba and Zulu are used alongside English. While most of the migrant-led churches describe themselves and their worship form as Pentecostal (a few use the designation of free-style or contemporary), the chaplaincies use the traditional or liturgical forms of worship. The Orthodox churches often have ethnic-specific origins and their mission to these communities has both social-support and linguistic components. The leadership may be tied to Episcopal structures, often with locations outside the State. Some of the Orthodox formations are complex (for example, the Indian) and reflect historical issues in terms of both governance and allegiance. Some Orthodox churches have developed strong links and mission to indigenous Irish communities (notably the Romanian and Russian).

There were only a few cases in which the leader was not also the contact person for the church or chaplaincy. The designation of pastor (abbreviated Ptr) was used in most cases for churches. Other designations include Shepherd, Evangelist, Mother or Prophet. When Deacon (Dn) or Deaconess (Ds) is used for the leader, they usually signify a temporary responsibility. Very few churches have an office, which means that the number given is a personal mobile or landline number for the contact person or pastor. Mobile contact proved to be the more reliable form of telephone contact. In general, the main services for both churches and chaplaincies are held on Sundays. However, although not shown in the data table, several of the churches mentioned other important worship meetings on other days. Northern Ireland Research Background

Introduction

The research in Northern Ireland revealed a contrasting picture to that of the Republic of Ireland in regard to migrant-led churches. It appears that the wide and diverse range of established Christian denominations and churches in Northern Ireland has catered for the needs of many migrants. Established churches have provided for some of their congregations’ language needs (e.g. a monthly mass in Polish), and migrants are making considerable contributions to Christianity in Northern Ireland through their participation and diverse cultural expressions of their faith.

People who have migrated here have received or created additional support through small fellowship groups. These seem to be playing an important role for participants. Although they may not constitute a ‘church’, they are the church (understood as the people) pursuing their faith and supporting and serving one another.

The migrant-led churches and chaplaincies in Northern Ireland have been set up to meet particular needs (i.e. chaplaincies to Polish or Filipino migrants), to cater for a specific language or ethnic group (e.g. Chinese Christian Church), or as a mission (e.g. Polish Mission Church). It is unclear if over time more migrant-led churches will be started up in Northern Ireland or if existing churches will continue to attract and cater for the needs and expressions of their faith. One thing for certain is that Christianity in Northern Ireland has become more diverse in recent years, with people from a wide range of backgrounds enriching and contributing significantly to church life.

Demographic Shifts

The last census in Northern Ireland, which was taken in 2001, showed that there were 26,600 people residing here who were born outside the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland out of the total population of 1,685,267. Clearly, these numbers have increased considerably since the time of the census. A report in 2006 suggested that the non-indigenous population might be closer to 45,000.4 Moreover, nearly 30,000 people from the A8 European Accession states were listed on the Workers’ Registration Scheme between 2004 and the middle of 2008.

The majority of people who have migrated to Northern Ireland in recent years are of European origin. Nevertheless, it is estimated that there are people residing here from more than 120 countries speaking over 70 different languages. While many still arrive in Belfast, the latest migrants often move on and the latest jobs that they fill are much more widely spread. Most country towns and rural areas now have some foreign nationals working there.5

AICCMR INTRODUCTION

Research Context

EMBRACE is a voluntary group of Christians from across the denominations whose aim is to make Northern Ireland a more welcoming place for people seeking asylum and people who have migrated here. Prior to work on this directory being undertaken, EMBRACE had conceived the idea of compiling information on migrant-led churches and the contribution of migrants within established churches in Northern Ireland. EMBRACE was pleased to support the AICCMR project and assisted in passing on any relevant information it had collected.

In gathering the data in Northern Ireland, a relatively small number of migrant-led churches were identified. This is not surprising in the light of 2001 census data that found that in addition to the 1,344,165 people who identified themselves as either Catholic, Presbyterian, Church of Ireland or Methodist, a further 102,221 identified themselves as ‘Other Christian’, citing an additional 100 Christian denominations, affiliations or individual church groupings. Christians who have migrated to Northern Ireland have a very wide range of churches from which to choose or associate.

Methodology

Working from information supplied by EMBRACE and the Inter-Church Centre, the research in Northern Ireland relied primarily on telephone, e-mail and personal visits to gather the data. The same criteria were used as in the Republic of Ireland to identify migrant-led churches in Northern Ireland. While this was necessary for the purposes of compiling the directory, it was clear that there is a great number of expressions of Christian faith by migrants that do not fit into the research criteria.

It was obvious to the researchers that migrants are making a significant contribution to Christian churches in Northern Ireland. Many attend and enrich established churches but also gather in smaller fellowship or home groups. Catholic churches, such as St. Colmcille’s and St. Anthony’s in Belfast or All Saints in Ballymena, have diverse congregations with significant numbers of Polish and Filipino parishioners. Similar examples within the Presbyterian Church include Fitzroy and Fisherwick churches in Belfast. Many of the newer, contemporary Christian churches throughout Northern Ireland have a diverse range of members, including many migrants, but are not migrant-led churches.

Terminology

The term ‘migrant-led’ did not present respondents with any difficulty; however, the researchers felt that while it was necessary as a means for identifying churches for the directory, it did not capture some of the expressions of migrants’ Christian faith. The Poor Clare monastery in Belfast, for example, has six sisters, four of whom are from the Philippines, so this Christian community and all the services that it provides would not be viable without the Filipina sisters. A number of fellowship groups were found but are not included in this directory since they would not consider themselves a ‘church’ or, for a variety of reasons, would not want to be identified publicly.

Page 13: MIGRANT-LED CHURCHES & CHAPLAINCIES · churches or inter-cultural congregations that are documented elsewhere.1 It serves as a mapping exercise to raise Irish awareness of the extraordinary

DIRECTORY OF MIGRANT-LED CHURCHES & CHAPLAINCIES 11

Overview of the Directory

On the whole, it seems that migrants prefer to join a local established church rather than set up their own, unless they require a service of worship in their own language (e.g. Belfast Chinese Christian Church), or a denomination that does not exist (e.g. The Antiochian Orthodox Church of St Ignatius)

The much greater number of Protestant Christian denominations in Northern Ireland and the choice available to migrants probably explains why there are not so many migrant-led churches. Nonetheless, the migrant-led churches in Northern Ireland are making an important contribution within the ecclesiological context and indicate the diverse social landscape which has been emerging and forming over recent years.

This ‘Directory of Migrant-Led Churches and Chaplaincies’ was produced by the All-Ireland Churches Consultative Meeting on Racism (AICCMR) as a resource for migrants, visitors to Ireland, the media, community groups, Christian churches and service providers. It has focused on churches and chaplaincies, where migrants are leaders and where their congregations are migrant majority and has identifi ed 361 such examples throughout the island.

The research was carried out by Dr Livingstone Thompson and Dr Alan Bruce in the Republic of Ireland and by Dr Scott Boldt and his team of Yvonne Naylor, Rob Fairmichael and Naomi Brown in Northern Ireland.

Due to the nature of this subject it is inevitable that some of the information listed will become dated over time. Therefore as well as this published directory, an online version will be regularly updated on the inter-church website at :

www.irishchurches.org

Go to this website and click ‘Migrant Churches’ on the top menu bar.

To update information, or to add new entries, please look at the entries listed and provide the detail in the same order, and send to [email protected] or by post to Rob Fairmichael, Inter-Church Centre, 48 Elmwood Avenue, Belfast BT9 6AZ.

The AICCMR would also like to formally thank the following for their fi nancial support:
