MihamaA Treasure Chest of
JAPANESE BEAUTYBeaches, mountains, rivers, lakes, people, food
– it is a rare environment in which the essence
of Japanese beauty is condensed into one
place. Mihama is a town where undulating
landscapes and a peaceful atmosphere come
together.
The natural harbor of Wakasa Bay
The Five Lakes of Mikata (Mikata
Goko) and their five colors
The changing appearances of the
mountains and villages through the
seasons
Rarely seen on the Japan Sea side is the large-scale Ria
coastline of Wakasa Bay in which complex topographic
features create a scenic landscape. In 1955 the Wakasa-Wan
Quasi National Park was established here.
Within the bay there are several smaller bays, and given
that it is relatively sheltered, the bay has prospered since
ancient times as a natural harbor. The environment is good
for fish and thus the area has an established reputation for
seafood as well as delicious processed marine goods.
In summer the area buzzes with visitors from surrounding
areas who come to swim at the beaches, and in other
seasons people can be seen fishing for ‘the big one’.
On the 8th of November 2005 the lakes were registered as
wetlands under the Ramsar Convention, and the picturesque
areas around the lakes feature groves of plum trees.
The Mikata Goko means five lakes in Mikata County, and each
of which has a different water type – Lake Mikata is fresh
water, Lakes Suigetsu, Suga and Kugushi are brackish water
with a mixture of fresh and sea water, and Lake Hiruga
consists of sea water. As a result, the fish life in each lake is
different as well.
The Mikata Goko cruise takes passengers across the lakes and
through the man-made canal (Uramigawa Canal), so that
sightseers can enjoy the beautiful scenery directly from the
lake.
In the island nation of Japan it is typical to have the plains and
the mountainous areas so close, and Mihama is no exception.
A pleasant drive reveals a kaleidoscope of scenery, and the
seasonal changes are also impressive.
Mihama is blessed with water in the form of the sea, the lakes
and the mountain streams, and on the mountain side of
Mihama, in Shinjo District, cultivation of the mysterious and
rare iwana mountain trout and yamame trout is carried out.
People can enjoy fishing in natural mountain streams and
barbecues of fresh fish.

Suishohama means Crystal Beach in JapaneseThis bathing beach was chosen as one of the best 88 bathing beaches in Japan – the
best beaches in terms of the criteria set out by the Swimming Beach Investigation
Commission – water quality, natural environment/views, assessment of environmental
considerations and programs, safety and convenience, and thus it attracts many
swimmers from both near and far every year. The sand is fine and the beach glistens
with white sands and clear water.
Since it is on the west side of the peninsula
it is popular as a ‘sunset beach’
year-round, with couples on dates often
seen here at sunset admiring the view.

Nyu-Shirahama Bathing BeachThe northernmost of Mihama's bathing beaches, Nyu-Shirahama, or
the white sandy beach of Nyu, owes its name to the impressive
whiteness of the sand. Visitors can enjoy its relaxing atmosphere as
well as its scenic seascape. Boat fishing is another attraction available
here.
Takenami Bathing BeachTakenami Beach exudes a relaxing, homey atmosphere. The nostalgic
streets of the Takenami district combined with its gorgeous sunsets
that bathe the coast in orange attract many visitors who like to stay at
the local minshuku.
Daiyahama (means Diamond Beach in Japanese)
Bathing BeachThe azure sea, blue sky, the evergreen of a pine grove and a long
stretch of white sandy beach are the essence of Daiyahama Bathing
Beach. It is fully equipped with parking lots and showers. The beach is
also alive with those who enjoy camping.
Sugahama Bathing BeachSugahama Bathing Beach still retains the unspoiled atmosphere of a
traditional fishing village. Visitors are impressed by the smiles and
friendliness of the local villagers, not to mention the serenity of the
beachside itself. On August 15, this beach is the setting for the annual
religious festival ‘shoraibune okuri’ to send off the villagers' ancestral
souls on specially decorated boats back to heaven.
Matsubara Bathing BeachThis beach has an idyllic, homey atmosphere, and it is popular with
groups and families.
Kugushi Bathing BeachWith its history as the oldest bathing beach in Mihama, this beach is
truly the center for a variety of marine sports in the area.
Accommodations abound, ranging from hotels and ryokan inns to
minshuku family-run lodgings, which cater to young couples as well as
families and other groups.
Hayase Bathing BeachA bathing beach in the Hayase District where Zuirinji Temple is located,
which was a location in the movie Cherry Blossoms Bloom.
Hiruga Bathing BeachThis bathing beach is close to Lake Hiruga, one of the Mikata Five
Lakes representing Mihama's scenic beauty. Around dusk, fishing
boats are seen bringing back the day's catch from the Wakasa Bay -
an unforgettably poetic scene. A number of minshuku or family-run
lodgings can be found near the lake.

Urami Canal and Mikata Goko CruiseMikata Goko is designated as the Wakasa-Wan Quasi National Park. A rarity in Japan,
there are five lakes clustered together, each with unique scenery and ecosystems.
The Mikata Goko Jet Cruise boat leaves from Hayase, enabling passengers to see the
sights of Lake Kugushi, Lake Mikata, Lake Suigetsu, and Lake Suga, and the Rainbow
Line toll road gives sightseers a totally different, birds’ eye view of the lakes.

Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle History Museum was opened in the Spring of 2009. It was originally a
mountain castle from the Sengoku Era (15th-16th Centuries). It is a museum that provides
information on the history of the remains of Kuniyoshi Castle (from which the Echizen Asakura Clan
were driven back and the three Daimyo Lords Oda, Toyotomi and Tokugawa were welcomed) and
its castle town of Sagaki.
In the museum are many historical documents, models and photos, as well as information panels
and videos, all providing information on the 450-year history of Kuniyoshi Castle and Sagaki.

Traditional Events in MIHAMA
Hassaku Festival (First Sunday in September, Hiruga)
This is the festival of Inari Shrine in Hiruga to pray for a bountiful fishing
season. Brave young men partake in sumo matches, and male babies
born in the year leading up to the festival have their sumo debut in
‘nakizumo’ or crying sumo. The screaming baby wrestlers evoke the
laughs of the audience.
Hassaku Festival (Shinjo, 1st September)
This is a festival at Hiyoshi Shrine in Shinjo to pray for a bountiful harvest.
The main event is the rampaging goblins. Said to be the most unusual
festival in Fukui Prefecture, it involves goblins chasing festival-goers with
a wooden phallus which he flashes from his robes.
Children’s Kabuki Theater (Hayase, 5th of May)
The Children’s Kabuki Theater has been
performed every year for 150 years. Boys
from elementary schools in Hayase District
put on makeup, wear bright costumes and
dance the Kotobukishiki Sanbuso dance.
You can enjoy the energy of the children
performing an elegant grown-up dance. A
clip of this dance was used in the film
‘Sakura Saku’ (Blossoms Bloom).
Water Tug of war(Hiruga, 3rd Sunday in January)
Held in Lake Hiruga (one of the Mikata Goko Lakes)
and the canal connecting it with the Japan Sea, the
water tug of war is an event to pray for a bountiful
fishing season. The young men of the village divided into
east and west try as hard as they can until either of the two
side breaks the thick straw rope, which is 30cm diameter and
40m long straw rope. They are not defeated by the winter cold and
their energetic tug of war makes for an exciting event.

Crab Course Meal
Yellowtail feast
A course meal in lavish style using plenty of crab
– the king of winter flavor.
Pufferfish Course Meal
Pufferfish is the stand-out taste of winter so eat your fill!
A pufferfish course meal uses generous portions of fresh tiger puffer, its flesh firm from being tossed by the
rough winter waves of the Japan Sea. It is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.
The most common pufferfish dish is ‘tessa’ or sashimi. The pattern on the plate of the almost transparent,
thinly sliced fish is a piece of art prepared by the chef. ‘tecchiri’ or pufferfish hot pot has a rather different
flavor from most hot pots because of the pufferfish flavor that forms the stock. You can also enjoy grilled
puffer, fried puffer karaage and lightly boiled puffer skin, followed by a light taste and refined zousui or
congee.
Limited timeDec. to Feb.
The opening of the Snow Crab fishing season at the beginning of November heralds the start of winter on
the Japan Sea. Snow crabs from Fukui Prefecture are branded as ‘Echizen Crab’, and are of very high
quality. Said to be the King of winter flavor, the taste is exceptional! In Mihama you can enjoy crab course
meals at ryokan inns, minshuku lodges and restaurants.
Particularly recommended is boiled crab. Freshly boiled crab is bright reddish orange, and the white meat
from the legs has refined sweetness. Remove the shell and you will find the crab ‘miso’ (innards). And in no
way inferior to boiled crab is crab sashimi. If you put the crab legs into iced water, they change into
beautiful chrysanthemum-like ‘petals’, with a texture that just melts in your mouth. There are also grilled
crab, crab tempura, crab hotpot, and crab congee. There are so many ways to eat it, and all exquisite.
At Hiruga Harbor in Mihama from December to February the fishermen are busy carrying out triangular set net fishing to
catch winter yellowtail. A variety of dishes are suited to the substantial fat content of winter yellowtail, including sashimi,
lightly boiled yellowtail (buri-shabu) and yellowtail teriyaki. Buri-shabu is a superb dish in which thinly sliced yellowtail is
wrapped around a piece of white leek and then swished through boiling water. Fish offcuts are simmered with fresh daikon
radish to create the exceptional taste of ‘buridaikon’. A yellowtail feast which also includes salted grilled yellowtail, lightly
boiled yellowtail skin and soy-marinated yellowtail sushi is also as popular as pufferfish and crab courses. Especially in the
cold of winter, why don’t you treat yourself to a rare feast of famous Mihama yellowtail?
Containing substantial fat and firm flesh, the taste of
yellowtail from Mihama is outstanding.
Mihama
Gourmet Food
gose perfectly well with steamed rice or sake.
A fermented food with an addictive
unique flavor that is good for your health.
Mihama Heshiko is fresh mackerel or other fish
preserved in salt then preserved in rice bran for a
long period of 1-2 years. It matures as it sits, and is a
traditional home-style dish chosen as one of the best
100 local dishes by the MAFF. In order to make it
even tastier, extra flavors can be added or alterations
made to the preserving methods or salt content, thus
different brands have different characteristics.
Furthermore, Mihama Heshiko is a fermented food
with a superb balance of minerals and amino acids.
The vitamins in rice bran promote good metabo-
lism, and the effects of DHA etc. contained in mack-
erel and other blueback fish are also well-known.
In addition, the fact that the flavorsome, fermented
heshiko has an effect on lowering blood pressure
has been taken up by the media in Japan.
According to the research carried out by Professor
Yoshiaki Akahane of Fukui Prefectural University,
there are approximately five times as many peptides
(amino acid chains) in heshiko-prepared mackerel as
in raw mackerel. In this way it has become known
that the peptides in fish can prevent high blood
pressure, and thus heshiko is attracting attention as a
health food with blood pressure control effects.
