Milan, 18th May 2015

Dear reader,

On behalf of MILMUN Association it is our pleasure to present you the MILMUN 2015 Conference Report. This document will provide you with all the relevant information collected throughout the year in the preparation process and during the event itself.

The Executive Committee, together with a devoted Secretariat and the support of the Association’s Advisory Board, managed to attract more than 130 participants, with 29 different nationalities and representing 33 universities to Milan, Italy. This success would not have been possible without the continued strong support of our Patrons and Sponsors!

As in previous years, we were honoured by the presence of world-class representatives of the academic and professional sectors relevant to this year’s theme “Changing Course to Feed the World”. Their input guaranteed energetic discussions in all committees and provoked interesting suggestions on how to solve some of today’s most pressing global issues. We will provide you with a complete summary of the debate outcomes in our Annual Report later this year.

We hope that our activities will continue to attract as many interested young professionals from all around the world in the future and look forward to the MILMUN 2015 conference.

With best regards,

Elena N. Sandell K. Victor Henckel von Donnersmarck MILMUN 2015 Secretary-General MILMUN Association President

What is a MUN conference?

A Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of different committees of the United Nations, where the mainly student-level participants take on the role of a diplomat and represent a country different from their country of origin. The aim of this alternative education approach is to allow participants to familiarize themselves with the UN and EU systems, investigating possible solutions to global issues and researching about another country’s culture, economy and political positions.

Background

With its tenth edition in 2015, the Milan International Model United Nations (MILMUN) conference is the longest lasting annual, university-level simulation of international institutions in Italy. It was first held in May 2006 and has since attracted more than 900 young academics with over 70 different nationalities and representing 140 universities from all over the world.

Impressions

UNCITRAL UK: It was awesome. We managed to establish a lot of friendships, meet new people, and express ourselves in English. Bocconi is a stimulating environment, and the legal committee is a great committee. It's how it actually works. Canada: This was one of the best committees. It dealt with both political and technicalities, and was very beneficial for our personal and academic careers.

UNSC

China: For our committee we discussed the construction of the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile River, which is of great importance to China -- although we ultimately had to veto the resolution in the end because of that. We didn't have a Russia on our committee, but the United States was very prepared and passionate, and the observer delegates we invited from the conference team were very helpful. The crisis was also very well prepared, but I don't think we would have had the time to handle much more than the four updates we received. The conference itself was very fun, and the delegates were passionate, motivated, and prepared.

UNEA

Indonesia: This was my first experience of MUN in general, as I am in my first year in university. It is exciting because you can improve your skills, learn to speak publically, inform yourself, and build good friendships with each other. It was good because I had to think of Indonesia's position, not just Italy's. The crisis updates we received during the conference were very interesting, because they were not expected and because we had to inform ourselves quickly which made them much more involving than other topics. I would suggest to a friend that they should try it. It is a social experience: you get to know other people and other cultures, improve your English skills, and have to represent your assigned country on positions that you do not yourself hold.

CEU-ECOFIN

Spain: I have been to four MUN conferences, and MILMUN 2015 was one of the best. It was an honour to be on the best council I have ever attended at a MUN. I like CEU-ECOFIN as a committee: it was a formal meeting, but the chairs also have a very human attitude. I really liked the CAP topic, which is possibly the most important topic as it underlines the importance of the work of the EU. This is an international experience that gives you the skills to be ready for the challenges of life.

FAO

Ecuador: This was my first MILMUN. It was great, especially as it was linked with the Milan Expo 2015 and matched its topics with the theme of the Expo. I chose the FAO because of its topics and my interest in GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). This conference inspired me and I will definitely go on to others. The socials were good, especially the Gala on the terrace of Hotel dei Cavalieri with its view of the city, and the food was the best ever. I know, because I've been sitting on the FAO.
