Beverly grew up on the east coast and went to college in San Jose, CA. She met her husband, Jeff, in California. Eventually his company transferred them to Michigan. Bev has two younger sisters and a nephew who live in California. Her niece, Sarah, lives in Seattle with her family. Jeff died in 2012. Bev worked as an editor for various companies.

Favorite Food: Bev enjoys Mexican, Japanese, etc. She likes everything.
Least Favorite Food: Lima Beans!!!
Fun Fact: Bev went to 13 different schools, including 2 high schools, before she attended college. Her dad was a research engineer for IBM and they liked their people to travel. Beverly enjoyed Amsterdam and London most of all!
Outlook on Life: Life is a great journey even with the pot holes along the way!
Volunteer Spotlight: Drew Holt Why did you start volunteering at Milan Seniors for Healthy Living? (MSHL) I get great satisfaction from helping others and serving people. I picked MSHL because of the multiple serving opportunities in one place: Meals on Wheels, programs, etc. What do you do here? I help with Meals on Wheels, I set up
tables and chairs, move the wall, and help out with Special Events and Foodie Tuesdays. How long have you been volunteering here? I have been at MSHL for a year.
What do you like about volunteering here? I like that everyone is appreciative. I like that volunteering here is not cut-throat and everyone is real friendly.

Closing for Bad Weather To keep our participants and volunteers safe, MSHL closes when Milan Area schools are closed due to inclement weather. Tune in to your local radio or TV station to stay updated, and MSHL staff will attempt to update social media as well.
If you have a transportation ride scheduled or are receiving Meals on Wheels, you will receive a call saying whether these services are still running or need to be closed for safety.

Giving Tuesday’s Wall o’ Money Entering its sixth year, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and
collaboration. This year, MSHL had the Wall o’ Money (envelopes labeled $1—$100 for donations) to raise funds for a new wheelchair accessible vehicle. Not only is our transportation service growing to needing A third vehicle, but one of our current wheelchair accessible minivans is nearing the end of her life. New
wheelchair accessible vehicles cost approx. $45,000. Thank you to those who participated in MSHL’s Wall o’ Money! You helped us raise:
$3023!!! You can still donate as we have about $42k still to go! Contributions can be made anonymously, however if
you include your name we can send you a tax deduction letter.
Support Raising! Approximately 4% of MSHL’s budget as well as some special projects are raised through various fundraising efforts. Below is a brief overview of the many ways your dollars have supported all we do here to serve you!
December’s Special Bingo Fundraiser Thank you to all who came to our Special Bingo Fundraiser held this past December 6. It was a lot of fun and
I hope you found some pictures of you and your friends on Facebook. You helped us raise: $1707.85!!!
Fundraisers like Special Bingo help MSHL meet our bottom line and keep our costs for services low. Our next bingo will be Tuesday, April 10, 2018.
Perpetual Rummage Sale 2017 We’ve had a perpetual rummage sale as a fundraiser running all year to help us meet our bottom line and keep costs for you low. Community members bring in items from their homes they no longer want, and participants can “purchase” what they want for a free-will donation to the center! You helped us raise:
$1,068.60!!! In 2018, we are changing how the sale works. We will continue to accept donations year ’round, but the sale
will be only be available during our Birthday Celebrations (second Thursday of the month) and other select special events in the lunch room. Items not sold at the sale will be donated to another organization who
can better use the items. Pop can returns have moved to the kitchen and greeting card sales will still be available year-round.
Amazon Smile & Kroger Community Rewards 2017 Amazon and Kroger have giving programs and this is how it works: you pick a charity, you shop, they give a
portion to the charity of what you paid! No extra costs to you. Shoppers like you helped us raise: $1456.93!!!
Thank you for those using those programs to raise money for MSHL! If you want more information on how to use these programs, see page 16 of the newsletter or call the senior center at 734.508.6229.

Circuit training (also on page 4) is a fast-paced class in which you do one exercise for 5 minutes and then move on to another exercise. Everyone begins at a “station” (a place where an exercise is done), and when the instructor yells “Time!” everyone moves to the next station. Some classes alternate an aerobic activity (like stepping or stationary cycling) with a muscle-strengthening activity (like using weight machines). Others focus exclusively on muscle toning or aerobic exercise.
Circuit Training is a Fitness Class that runs for 8 weeks for $21. Space is limited, sign up in the office.

Monroe County Commission on Aging supports the Senior Center activities, Transportation, and Home Delivered Meals with the Monroe County Senior Millage.
MSHL is pleased to be funded in 2017-2018 by the Washtenaw Coordinated Funders, a collaboration of Washtenaw County, the City of Ann Arbor, and Washtenaw Urban County (represented by the Office of Community & Economic Development), United Way of Washtenaw County, the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor, and the RNR Foundation.
Thank you to the voters of Milan who supported the Milan Senior Millage. Thank you to the City of Milan for the Millage and the many shared resources such as the senior center itself.
The Senior Nutrition Program of the Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) is funded in part by the Federal Older Americans Act and the Aging and Adult Services Agency through the Area Agency on Aging 1-B. OCED complies with the terms and regulations of the Title V Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended and Section 504 of the Social Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and is an Equal Opportunity Employer program. Reasonable accommodations will be provid-ed upon notification or request.

About the cost of services:
Transportation Service fares only cover 20% of the actual costs to run the service.
Senior Café & Meals on Wheels actual cost is approximately $9.50 per meal. The suggested
donation for those programs only covers $3 per meal. 53% of Meals on Wheels participants are
NOT able to pay.

Scholarship Opportunities for ALL Programs
While we set our fees as low as possible, we are aware that even this price may pose a hardship for some. We have a scholarship fund which pays up to half of the cost of a program. If you (or someone you know) is hesitant to participate due to costs, please speak to one of the staff—we’d love to help! If you are interested in supporting the fund, it is sustained by the snacks sold on the office counter and through donations. We greatly appreciate any support to make what we offer accessible to everyone.
