GAMES With only two rounds to be played it now appears that the four

tei ms now on top will be the ones to fight out the finals commencing at Yerong Creek on August 26.

L ockh irt ad Wagga and to a lesser degree North Wagga still have a slender chance but for them to make it Temora would h.\lve to lose th :ir remaining matches one of which Is against Benty at Temora today. Tliey wa not want to take Benty lightly but the added incentive of knowing a win here will make them secure should seal the issue.

The fight for second place and the double chance is interesting as Culcair:n and Collingu)lill, the two teams with that chance meet the two

Wagga and Lockhart respectively.Thelle should be gJeat games, Cul• cairn and the Gullie not only desperately ' trying to win will, also have an eye on bu ding percentages as at present only approximately three per cent separate them, with Culcalm the better.

Both top teams have the home ground advantage, which must be to their aiJvantage. Lockhart and Wagga are pl'Obably the most improved teams in ,the League over the last few weeks will make these games thrillers that sboqld brhtg out a11 that is grand in the Code.

North Wagga are at home to the Combines .who in the last couple of games have shown considerable improvement and haven't lost by the whl, m rglo of earlier games". North with a comfortable win over Holbrook last week returned to the form thllt won them a number of games in a -row in recent weeks.

In the other game M.C.U, are at home to Holbrook although depleated by injuries should keep the leader!! busy.

The second semi-finals played at Temora last Sunday in very windv conditions, resulted in a very close win by Turvey Park over Coolamon in the Under l'f grade. After a vecy tight struggle in the first three quarters, Turvey Park managed to hold on to win 1;,y 5 points.

Coolamon turned the tables in the Under 16 division when. with the scores level with 10 minutes to go, Chris Dryden br6ke away from the tight Turvey Park defence to kick 3 ioals and seal the game for CoolamQil.

Scores-Under 14: Turvey P1ft"k 4-7-31 def. Coolamon 3-8-26. Under 16: Coolamon 8-13-61 def. Tufvey Park 5.-15-45

In the preliminary finals to be played this Sunday at North Wagga, the Under 16 Turvey Park team should win against M1ft"ian Dons, although Marian Dons could surprise Turvey Park with their teamwork and strong hackline.

Due to an unfortunate circumstance our regular scribe is hospitalised for an appendectomy. At last someone's going to get something out of Peter. All the best, Pete--see you soon.

Bill Hanison is still on the sick list although I heard that he was seen at the game last week, however with his tiger spirit running high I'm sure Bill will be well and back with us again soon.

THE ROCK-YER. CK. NOTES

The first half of last week's game was an interesting one, but afte-, half time you completely went to sleep and through the third quarter scoreless. If you played the full 100 minutes and the form you sometimes show for one or tw.o quarters, I am sure a few more wins would have been chalked up.

It was bad luck Brian Michael getting a nasty knock on the head with a touch of concussion that may keep him out today. Best of luck for a speedy recovery. Brian.

Stars of the game were Col Taylor, who rea)ly played a magnificent back man's game--those clearing dashes were well worth watching. The goals kicked by Leo (2) and Athol (1) were as long as any seen this year. Leo finished the game with four and is among the League's leading goalkicicers. But for his unselfish play he could have had many mo;e.

The seconds again came up with a good win. It was pleasing to see Barry Breed back with our Code. Others to tleserve a mention were John Collins, who rarely turns in a bad game; "Elvis" Meyers, a grand job in the ruck, and what a find in Bob Morris, playing his first game of Rules. We are

TEMORA NOTES

Full marks to Culcairn for putting up a great fight back in the third term and set themselves into second position, Was Temora over-eonfiedent at half time? If so, this was a timely defeat and a lesson to our yollllg1>ters that it takes ALL of 100 m1nutes to win a game.

Toe seconds ran on with 16 players, and of these Kevin Steinke, a junior: and Robert Hartwig helped out. With this poor representation. 11 is understandable that the side would be defeated. However, an interetsing gatne eventuated-the mark of Noel Steinke's was a beauty. .

With the seconds now fighting to avoid the wooden spoon, and the firsts hanging on grimly, to fourth place, _today's matches with Benty are J.IIl·

portant to both grades. . . Tonight the BIG dance 1s on m the

HENTY NOTES

Today it's Temora which will provide the opposition. We are soP;y to have to do this to our very worthy opponents, but we feel we are set to win this match and put Temora out of the "four".

Last week we had a meritorious win over the Combine and this was despite the fine <kop kicks for goal of Leo Brereton and Athol Webb.

Contributing to our win last week were:-

Charlie Griffith, who completely smothered Combine coach, Athol Webb, after the long break.

Bruce Diffey, for a cou,;ageous display despite a badly injwed right thiJili.

Brian Spencer's six goals, which spearheaded the Red and Whites' win

Brian Willis, with his fine aerial display.

K'angaroo pup, Col Ruhe, who played so well ill the ruck. ... and a mention also to War-;en Schulz in the $econds for his long, driving kicks from the centre.

All Australian Rules officials, players and supporters should patronise our advertisers in the Aussie Ruler.

M.C.U. NOTES A ti.,ily superb second half by the

18 Mango-Cook seniors -:e-established them as outright leaders of the League.

A very good Lockhart side looked likely winners at the long interval, but no team in our competition could have withstood the determination and magnificent play the lads "turned on". Congratulations to all players.

While our Seconds kick points galore the opposition kick as many goals. These lads, however, never give up. All are behind you boys, so see if you can win these last two games to finish the season on a high note.

The -very best of everything that's good go to David and Marlene on this their wedding day.

Sorry to see John Joyce leave the field last week. Hope the injlh--y is not too serious, John. and you will be there for the finals.

To-day we face Holbrook without the Maher brothers. Provided the senior players can reproduce last week's fo;m, their absence will not be felt. So, here's hoping Rex can recapture his old 3:ccur~cy,_ an~ we _can again see a premiership side in actiol!..

HOLBROOK NOTES Defeat again, but considering the

number of players carrying injuries not a bad effort I feel.

Let's hope we have a fully fit side today. Any more injuries and we won't have enough players for two teams. If only we could get our teamwork flowing things would be a lot different. This part of our game seems to have deserted us since we played Wagga, without it we are just an ordinary team. It has been quite a while since we won a major.

The seconds played quite well afte-: half time to outscore North in that half of the game. Once again, as has been the swry for the last five matches. they were short last week, started with sbr.teen, had .eighteen at half tinie,, at threequarte'r time were one short again. Regru:-dless of numbers I am sure you will win today.

A man walked into a coffee shop during the lunch-hour rush, ordered a cup of coffee, gulped it down, left a dime on the counter and walked out. The waitress scooped up the coin and put it in her pocket--only to catch the cold eye of the owner staring at her. She hesitated a moment, then shook her head sadly. "What a screwbaU," she confided. "Leaves a ten-cent tip, then walks out without paying."

LOCKHART NOTES

Well, we weren't good enough on the day. but we certainly made "United" pull the big ones out of the 'bag', which they did to no me!in or~er. We had many good players, mcludmg Rex Smallwood, who was unbeatable for most of the day However, Mango's little men proved a hurdle when $ey broke away towards the end of the third quarter.

The seconds were able to notch another win, but will have to imP£ove their work to reach the grand final.

Return of some first XVIII players available for the final-Ian King; Geoff Schirmer and Les Harrington, from injury-will no doubt give them a big lift.

Don't forget the Club Banquet coming up; bookings by August 26th at Ian King's store. This should p,;ove to be the event of the year, with the announcement of the winners of club awards as the climax.

The under 16's have their fi.ist semi coming up on Sunday at Yerong Creek, having missed out on second position by 10 per cent. So how about some support from the older players and officials.

Would like to congratulate the last two umpires we played under-MeS&,s.

Mannering and Hodge. What an improvement . . . having the game under control at all times. They earned praise from all sides.

Old rivals, "Gullie". will be a beauty - a first class game should be seen by all at the Crossroads.

COLLINGULLIE NOTES

A good team effort in which every member played his part carried us to a rather convincing victory over Wagga last week. However, our tendency to lapse in the final quarter allow_ed Wagga to kick five goals and, with the finals coming up, we will have to tighten our play a little more.

Sonny- Morrow, playing his first game in the centre for some time, had his best game this season and gave the side a Jot of drive. Others to play well in a fairly even side were Stephen Shipway, Brownie Whyte, Jim Absolum, Alan Tipping and Ken Morrow.

The seconds had a rather disappointing matcp, having no answer to Wagga's non-stop pla)!,on style of football. No doubt th~, will be the side to beat fo: this year s pennant, and it's hard to see them going down to any of the other sides at present.

Shirt winners for last week were Sonny Morrow and Ron Gunning.

CULCAIRN NOTES Well, even after winning Saturday's

game by seven goals, you are still only just holding second position, so the next two games win be very import• ant to you.

Your performance in the first half last week. was not very impressive, because many of you seemed as if you we-,·e not very interested in playing football. The second half you decided to play football, and made the scoreboard look much brighter. Why must yu play in- fits and starts? It is just not good enough, because you must go all out to win from now on, otherwise you will lose that coveted second position. The 'Gullie will be flat out trying to get into second place, so why not hold them out, with a big win to-day.

Let us see some team work to-day instead of getting in each others way which occurred many times last week; also you still are not talking enough and this causes bad misunderstanding between you.

The Seconds had another big win against Temora, and seem to be improving every week. To-d. y's game will be a big test for you, so give your best and I am sure you will come through with flying colours.

Good luck!

WAGGA NOTES The less said about last Saturday

the better. It was by no means a grand performance on our part at Robertson Oval. We could not match the "Gullie" wifh their open forward line play and this I feel was ou,,_· downfall.

Today we travel to Culcairn and with a very slim chance of making the four we will be out to regain the form which we showed when we downed competition leaders M.C.U. a couple of weeks ago. so look out Culcairn. We may cause another upset.

The second eighteen ended any chance Colingullie may have had of making the finals with another good win and it this stage look set to take out the majo; premiership.

Players to show good form in the seconds were J. Meyer, who landed three grand goals while resting in the forward pocket, G. Smith who played his usual solid game at centre half forward, and G. Rockliffe on th· wing.

Our social, which was held last Saturday night was once again a huge success and our social organiser Neal Owen togethe,; with his fellow workers are due for a big pat on the back for the way they have kept these functions going this year.
