Sharon Andreoli, Ph.D.ByronP.andFrancesD.HollettProfessorofPediatricsIUSchoolofMedicine

Dr. Andreoli received her medical degree from the IUSchoolofMedicine(IUSM)inJuly1978andthencompletedherfellowshipatIUSMin1984.Shebecame an assistant professor of pediatrics in June 1984.ShecontinuedhercareerwithinthesectionofPediatricNephrologyandin2004becamethesectiondirectorofPediatricNephrology.Duringhercareer,Dr. Andreoli served in many roles not only on the IUSMlevel,butshealsoservedandrepresentedthedepartmentandIUSMnationallyandinternationally.Dr.Andreoli’sschoolservicesincludedservingontheIUSMConflictofInterestCommittee.Dr.Andreoli has been a strong voice for the promotion ofthedepartment’sclinicalandtenuretrackfaculty,including service as the chair of the Department of

PediatricsPromotionCommitteeforClinicalFaculty.In2008,shebecamethechairoftheIUSMPromotionandTenureCommittee.Dr.AndreolihasalsoservedatthecampuslevelontheIUPUIPromotionandTenureCommitteesince2006.Nationally,shehasservedontendifferentcommitteesoftheNationalKidneyFoundation.Since2006,shehas served on the board of directors for the KDIGO - Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes, an international organization focused on improving kidney disease on a global scale including initiating clinical practice guidelines in all areas of kidney patient care.

Dr.Andreoli’sexcellenceinservicehasbeenwelldocumented.Sheiscertainlyrecognizedbymanyresidents,fellows,andfacultyas“passionateaboutteaching,diligentwithherpatientcare,andadynamicleader.”ItisnoteworthythatDr.Andreolihasbeennamedasaleaderinherfieldforthepast14yearsinthelistingofthe“BestDoctorsinAmerica.”ShehasbeentherecipientoftheIndianaUniversityTrustees’TeachingAwardand,in2014,shewasawardedtheIUSMAlumniAssociationDistinguishedMedicalAlumni Award. As a mentor for young fellows, Dr. Andreoli has been someone who has been described as a true example to follow.

WhileDr.AndreoliretiredfromIUSMinFebruary2016,shewillcontinuetoremainactive in her division and clinical practice. She is a tireless advocate for the care of children with kidney disease. Her continued service not only to the Department of PediatricsbutalsoIUSMisexemplary.AfteroverthirtyyearsofservicetoIUSMandtheDepartmentofPediatrics,itwouldbehonortohaveDr.SharonP.Andreoliasemeritusprofessorofpediatrics.TheDepartmentofPediatricsiscontinuallygratefulforherdedication.

Enrica Ardemagni, Ph.D.ProfessorofSpanishIUSchoolofLiberalArts

EnricaArdemagnijoinedtheIUPUIfacultyin1987asassistantprofessorofSpanish,shortlyafterreceivingherPh.D.inSpanishfromtheUniversityof Wisconsin, Madison. She has held adjunct appointmentsintheIUSchoolofMedicineandinUniversityCollege.Shehasalsoheldleadershipappointments as acting associate dean for academic affairsandaspresidentoftheSchoolofLiberalArtsFacultyAssembly.

Inthelast28yearsatIUPUI,shedevelopedcoursesinSpanishforspecificpurposes(medical,legal,andbusinessSpanish)andcoursesintranslationand interpreting. Her work paved the way for the establishmentofanUndergraduateandGraduate

CertificateinTranslation.Shehasalsobeenaleaderinonlineteaching,experientiallearning, and service learning. A forerunner in outreach activities to the local Hispanic community,shewasanearlyexemplaratIUPUIofsupportfordiversity.Herworkin developing a curriculum in medical interpreting and co-teaching the bilingual Introduction to Clinical Medicine course to medical students led to her appointment as adjunctprofessorintheIndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicine.

EnricaArdemagni’searliestresearchwasinthefieldoftextualcriticism.Herpublishedwork includes articles on medieval Spanish literature, research on translation studies and teaching translation, as well as applied and creative scholarship in the form of translations of novels and short stories by Latin American authors.

FewfacultyhavecontributedinsuchstrongfashiontoIUPUI’smissionasanurbanresearch university. She is the founder of Mapping Education Towards Achievement (META),amodelIUPUIprogramforLatinohighschoolstudents.Inherprofession,she has held leadership roles in the American Translators Association and the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care.

John C. Baenziger, M.D.AssociateProfessorEmeritusIUSchoolofMedicine

John Baenziger is a native of Iowa and a graduate ofbothIowaStateUniversity(B.S.1973)andtheUniversityofIowa(M.D.1977).HecametoIndianaUniversityin1977todoaninternshipininternalmedicine which he followed with a residency in pathology,graduatingin1982.JohnwascertifiedbytheAmericanBoardofPathologyinanatomicandclinicalpathologyin1982andinchemicalpathologyin1986.(Therewasnorequirementforformalfellowshiptrainingforsubspecialtycertificationatthattime.)JohnjoinedthefacultyoftheDepartmentofPathologyandLaboratoryMedicinein1982asanassistant professor and was promoted to associate professor,withtenure,in1987.

Johnplayedakeyrole,withthen-chairmanCarletonNordschow,M.D.,Ph.D.,inestablishing the Indiana Department of Health-sponsored newborn screening laboratory in1984.ThislaboratoryscreenseverynewbornchildinIndianaforinheriteddiseases.InJohn’s23yearsasdirectorofthenewbornscreeninglaboratory,approximately2,000,000babieshavebeenscreened.Johndirectedthelaboratoryfrom1992untilhisretirement.

WithDr.Nordschow,Johnestablishedasportstoxicology(“doping”)laboratoryin1984,directingthelaboratoryfrom1992to2002.ThelaboratorywascertifiedbytheInternational Olympic Committee and provided toxicological analyses for many amateur and professional sports organizations.

JohnalsomadesignificantleadershipcontributionstotheclinicallaboratoriesoftheIndianaUniversityMedicalCenter,includingtheRoudebushVAMedicalCenterandWishardHospital.Overtheyears,atonetimeoranother,hedirectedallofthedifferentchemistry laboratories as well as hematology laboratories and laboratory information systems.

Tamilyn Bakas, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.H.A., F.A.A.N.ProfessorEmeritaIUSchoolofNursing

Tamilyn(Tami)BakasreceivedherB.S.N.(1985),M.S.N.(1988),andPh.D.(1996)fromIndianaUniversitySchoolofNursing(IUSN).Duringthe30yearsTamiwasassociatedwithIndianaUniversity,she served in several professional capacities including faculty member, mentor, researcher, and administrator.ShewasalsoanaffiliatedscientistwiththeCenterforEnhancingQualityofLifeinChronicIllnessatIUSNandtheCenterforAgingResearchatIUPUI.Throughouthercareer,Tamiwascommittedto improving the lives of family caregivers for stroke survivors.

Tami was a popular and enthusiastic educator, earning the respect of nursing students at all levels.

She was primarily responsible for courses in the areas of data analysis, statistical methods, and research design and measurement. As a testament to her skills, she gave more than 30 invited lectures over the course of her career. She was selected as the facultyadvisor/mentorfor28undergraduateandgraduatestudentsfrom1999to2015andservedondissertationcommitteesfor17doctoralstudents.ShereceivedmanyteachingawardsincludingtheIUTrustees’TeachingAwardin2001.

Tami’sgreatestimpactatIUSNwasthedevelopmentoftheBakasCaregivingOutcomesScale(BCOS)andsubsequentinterventionprogramforcaregiversofstrokesurvivors,theTelephoneAssessmentandSkill-BuildingKit,whichwasfundedfor$1.9millionbythe National Institutes of Health. She has been recognized nationally and internationally for this innovative work that improved the lives for many family members caring for strokesurvivors.Shereceived15awardsinrecognitionofherexemplaryworkasanursescientist.

Tami was the chair of the Department of Science of Nursing Care until she retired in 2015.Asdepartmentchair,shewasinstrumentalinleadingthedevelopmentofprocessesand new initiatives to improve student educational outcomes and facilitate faculty. Her impactonthelivesstudentsandfacultyalikeatIUSNisimmeasurable.Wewillmissherand wish her well as she embarks on new endeavors.

SusanMcLennon,Ph.D.,R.N.AssociateProfessorandInterimChairDepartment of Science of Nursing Care IUSchoolofNursing

Trudy W. Banta, Ed.D.ProfessorofHigherEducationandStudentAffairsSeniorAdvisortotheChancellorforAcademicPlanningandEvaluation

Dr.TrudyW.BantajoinedIUPUIin1992fromtheUniversityofTennessee,Knoxville,whereshehadalreadygained a national reputation as an expert in assessment. Forthepast24years,IUPUIhasimprovedincountlessways thanks in large part to her leadership and expertise.

ThroughIUPUI’sOfficeofPlanningandInstitutionalImprovement, which she established, Trudy oversaw IUPUI’seffortstomaximizelearningbyemployingongoing processes of student assessment and program review. She has provided oversight for accreditation self-studies and has helped deans across campus evaluate theeffectivenessoftheiracademicprograms.Herofficeassistsfacultyandstaffinsettingstandardsforstudent learning, systematically gathering and analyzing evidence to assess student performance in relation to

those standards, and implementing changes to heighten student achievement. New initiatives includingIUPUI’selectronicportfolio,establishedunderherleadership,havehelpedbuildacultureofevidencetoimprovelearningatIUPUI.

Since1992,Trudy’sofficehasalsohostedtheAssessmentInstituteinIndianapolis(assessmentinstitute.iupui.edu),thenation’soldestandlargesteventfocusedexclusivelyonoutcomesassessmentinhighereducation,whichhasgrowninattendancefrom350tomorethan1,000.PresentersandparticipantscomefrominstitutionsacrosstheU.S.aswellasothercountries.

As a professor of higher education and a leading thinker and speaker on the topic of outcomes assessment,Trudyhaspresentedatconferencesin25countriesandhasdevelopedandcoordinated30nationalassessmentconferencesand15internationalconferences.Shehasreceived 10 national awards for her work, has served on national advisory panels, and has consultedwithfacultyandadministratorsin47statesonthetopicofoutcomesassessment.Sheis the author or editor of 20 books and several hundred articles and reports on assessment and isalsothefoundingeditoroftheaward-winningAssessmentUpdate,abi-monthlyperiodicalpublishedsince1989byJossey-Bass.

It is an understatement to say that Trudy has had a transformative impact on our campus, from our principles of undergraduate learning, accreditation, program review, and improvement to our culture of continuous improvement based on evidence. We are grateful indeed for having been her academic home and the host of the Assessment Institute for half the history of this campus.

Whiletoday’sluncheonandotheroccasionswillprovideopportunitiestoacknowledgeandcelebratethecontributionsTrudyhasmadetoIUPUI,wewillprobablyneverbeabletothankherenoughforhercommitmenttoleavingIUPUIbetterthanshefoundus.

Kathryn Coe, Ph.D.ProfessorEmeritusIURichardM.FairbanksSchoolofPublicHealth

Kathryn Coe received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English with minors in philosophy and history from ArizonaStateUniversity(ASU)in1965.Afteryearsof international travel and adventures, she returned toASUtocompleteamaster’sdegreeinsocialculturalanthropology(1984)andadoctoraldegreeinanthropologyandevolutionarybiology(1995).Sincereceiving her doctorate, Kathryn has worked at the ArizonaStateHealthDepartment(1995-1998),theUniversityofMissouriDepartmentofAnthropology(1998-2002),andtheUniversityofArizonaZuckermanCollegeofPublicHealth(20022010).

KathryncametoIUPUIin2010tobeafoundingfacultymemberoftheFairbanksSchoolofPublic

Health.Whenshearrived,shewasoneofasmallfacultyintheDepartmentofPublicHealthintheIUSchoolofMedicine.Herarrivalbroughtextensiveexpertiseincultureand health, global health, and cross-cultural research.

Kathrynhasspenthercareerworkingtounderstandhowcultureinfluenceshealththrough a multidisciplinary, multicultural lens. She has inspired and served as a mentor to numerous faculty and students. Her research has ranged from looking at theeffectsofdeforestationonthehealthandwellbeingofatribeinEcuador,workingon cancer prevention and control with Native Americans in the Southwest, studying Andeanmothers’diagnosesofparasiteinfectionsinchildren,increasingbreastandcervicalcancerscreeninginunderservedwomenintheUnitedStates,andmostrecentlyexamining cancer knowledge in Serbian gypsies.

KathrynservedasPIandco-PIonseverallargegrantsaswellasco-investigatoronnumerous others. She has published more than 100 scholarly works which have brought her international recognition. Many of her publications contain very novel approaches that examine the role of culture on health, including ones on the etiology of breast cancer, art and evolution, the role of mothers in evolution, storytelling and health, health interventions as rituals kinship and health promotion, and religion and health promotion.

Kathryn will retire in June 2016 with the well-deserved designation of professor emeritus.

John (Jack) Coleman III, M.D.ProfessorEmeritusofSurgeryIUSchoolofMedicine

Dr. Coleman completed both his undergraduate work andmedicalschooltrainingatHarvardUniversitySchoolofMedicine.Hesubsequentlycompletedgeneral surgery residency and his plastic surgery residency at Emory School of Medicine where he joinedthefacultyasassistantprofessorin1980.Heserved on the faculty at Emory for 11 years, achieving the rank of associate professor of surgery during his tenure.HewasrecruitedtoIndianaUniversityin1991tobecomethedirectorofplasticsurgery.In2000,hebecametheJamesE.BennettProfessorofPlasticSurgery.

Dr. Coleman served in the role of chief of plastic surgeryforthepast24yearselevatingthedivision

to a strong national reputation, with a strong record of achievement in burn surgery, pediatric plastic surgery, and adult plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Coleman served in a number of distinguished roles in national leadership including president of Southern Surgeons Club, president of the American Head and Neck Society, president oftheNorthAmericanBurnSociety,andchairmanoftheAmericanBoardofPlasticSurgery.

During these years, Jack maintained a very busy surgical practice, covering the breadth ofplasticsurgery.Since1991,heservedastheDirectoroftheRileyBurnUnit.Hisscholarship has included 112 peer-reviewed publications, and he has been editor of two books.ItismoredifficulttoquantifytheprofoundimpactthatJackhashadonhundredsonIndianaUniversitymedicalstudentsandresidencytraineesingeneralandplasticsurgery.

Dr.JohnColemanretiredfromtheIUSchoolofMedicineDepartmentofSurgeryinDecemberof2015,andwithhis24yearsofservicetotheuniversity,heleavesalastinglegacy.

Gary L. Dunnington, M.D.JayL.GrosfeldProfessorofSurgery Chair, Department of SurgeryIUSchoolofMedicine

Patricia Ebright, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N. AssociateProfessorandAssociateDeanGraduateProgramsIUSchoolofNursing

Dr.Patricia(Pat)Ebrighthasdevotedmorethan18yearsofservicetoIUSchoolofNursing(IUSN)andIUPUI.PatwasappointedasanadjunctassistantprofessortoIUSNfrom1993to1998,assistantprofessor from 2000 to 2006, and associate professor with tenure from 2006-2016. She served as the associate dean for graduate studies from 2010-2016. During her tenure, she made many contributions to the school and the nursing profession.

Dr. Ebright has been recognized as an innovative leaderoftheIUSNgraduateprogram.Sheisresponsiblefortheprogram’sstellarreputationfor exceptional academic standards and scholarly achievements of the program graduates. Dr. Ebright

achieved this status for our program because of her strong commitment and scholarly achievements on behalf of our students.

Dr.Ebrightisalsoawell-establishedprofessionalexpertinthefieldofpatientsafetyandquality.HerfundedscholarshipfromtheCenterforEnhancingQualityofLife,ClarianHealthValues,theVeteransAdministration,andtheNationalPatientSafetyFoundationhas been instrumental in developing evidence-based patient safety guidelines. Her scholarshipwasacknowledgedbycompetitiveselectionasaFellowintheAmericanAcademyofNursingandreceiptofthe2015NursingOutlookExcellenceinEducationAward for her coauthored manuscript regarding clinical education in nursing.

Dr. Ebright served on numerous committees, task forces, and work groups during her tenureatIUPUI.ShehasawealthofknowledgeaboutIU,IUPUI,andIUSN.Sheiswell-sought faculty and administrator for campus level service. Additionally, she was involvedinseveralIUSNcurriculumrevisionsandschool-wideself-assessmentstoimprovethequalityofourprograms.

We sincerely thank Dr. Ebright for her many contributions to the department, the School of Nursing, the campus, university, and our community.

Stephen F. Echtenkamp, Ph.D.EmeritusAssociateProfessorofCellularandIntegrativePhysiologyIUSchoolofMedicine-Northwest-Gary

Dr.Echtenkampearnedabachelor’sdegreeinbiophysicsatNebraskaWesleyanUniversityandaPh.D.inphysiologyandbiophysicsattheUniversityofNebraskaMedical Center. He was appointed to the Indiana UniversitySchoolofMedicine(IUSM)asanassistantprofessorandbeganteachinginJanuary1986.AtIUSM,he has been a principal investigator of both National InstituteofHealth(NIH)andAmericanHeartAssociationresearch grants and participated as a coinvestigator on numerous extramural NIH and American Heart AssociationgrantswithotherIUSMfaculty.Hehasauthored substantive research publications during this time and, overall, has been an active participant in the researchactivitiesatIUSM-Northwest-Gary.

Dr. Erler has a national reputation as a leader in critical care air transport. Her scholarship provides evidence-based care for transporting critically ill patients. She disseminated her work in multiple venues.Significantly,sheco-wroteapublicpolicypaperfortheFoundationforAirMedicalResearchand Education. Her expertise has been acknowledged by a number of interdisciplinary professional organizationsincluding:(1)recipientofthe2005President’sAwardfromtheAssociationofAirMedical Services for contributions for promoting

researchandeducation;(2)recognizedin2009foroutstandingcontributionstoAirMedicalResearchGrantCommittee,AssociationofAirMedicalServices;and(3)competitively selected in 2011 as an Outstanding Alumnus Career Achievement Award fromPurdueUniversitySchoolofNursing.

Duringher15yearsofservicetotheIUSchoolofNursing,Dr.Erlercontributedtotheknowledge development of the next generation of professional nurses. She was the course leader for the undergraduate Management and Leadership Didactic course as well as the primaryinstructorforcoursesinProfessionalNurseIssuesandNursingResearch.Shewas instrumental in teaching our RN BSN program. During these early years in practice, Dr.Fergusoncaredfor56Alaskanvillagescoveringover98,000squaremiles.Hewaspartofearlyhealthcare for Eskimos and traveled to the villages by boat or small plane spending weeks at a time in the villages.In1970,afterleavingAlaska,Dr.Fergusonbegan private practice in Wabash, Indiana, and stayed to practice the full scope of family medicine including inpatient, outpatient, obstetrics, and emergency room careuntil1987.

In1987,Dr.FergusonjoinedtheMethodistFamilyMedicineResidencyasfacultywiththecorevaluesoffamilymedicineinmind:patienteducation,quality/compassionatecare,publichealth,andtrulycomprehensivecare.In1996,IndianaUniversityandMethodistHospitalFamilyMedicineresidenciesmergedandDr.FergusonjoinedthefacultyasanassociateclinicalprofessoroftheIUSMIUMethodistFamilyMedicineResidency.Duringhistenureasresidencyfaculty,Dr.Fergusontouchedthelivesof247residentscommunicatingtothemthroughhisteachingstyleandmentorship.Hisnumberonegoal:“teachtheresidentshowtolovetheirpatients.”

Dr.FifejoinedtheRheumatologyDivisionin1981after completing a rheumatology fellowship at the UniversityofWashingtonSchoolofMedicine.Shereceived her undergraduate degree from Barnard CollegeandattendedtheJohnsHopkinsUniversitySchool of Medicine where she also did her internship and residency in internal medicine.

As a rheumatology faculty member, her laboratory research focused on articular cartilage glycoproteins and metalloproteinases particularly in relation to osteoarthritis. She served as the codirector of the Specialized Center of Research in Osteoarthritis from 1987to1992.Thisexperienceledhertoinvestigatethe role of metalloproteinases and their inhibition

incancer.Notjustabenchresearcher,Dr.FifebecamethedirectoroftheIndianaUniversityOutpatientClinicalResearchCenterin1993.Herdevotiontoassistinggraduate students and faculty obtain external funding resulted in her appointment as assistant,andlater,associatedean,forresearch(1990to2010).

JaniceFroehlichjoinedtheIndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicine(IUSM)in1985.Shebuiltaninternationally recognized research program in the genetics of alcoholism with a focus, in recent years, on the development of drugs to treat alcoholism and alcohol abuse. Her seminal studies on the heritability of opioid responses to alcohol and the role of opioid peptidesinmediatingalcoholdrinkingledtotheFDAapproval of Trexan for the treatment of alcoholism. Her research program, which has been continuously fundedbytheNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH),has served as the training ground for many students. Janhasbeentheresearchadvisor/mentorfor24students who have gone on to medical school and arepracticingallovertheUnitedStates.Shehas

also been the research advisor/mentor for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students who have developed their own independent careers in the basic sciences, dentistry, and law,someofwhomarenowtenuredfacultyofinstitutionsbothinsideIndiana(PurdueUniversity)andelsewhere(YaleUniversity).

Jan has served on most of the important committees and task forces at both the campus and university levels, many of them more than once. Dr. Michael Graham has committed his career to the practice of clinical family medicine. He has largely practiced in an academic setting while mentoring resident physicians and medical students. Michael has won countless teaching awards over the years and continues to maintain a relationship with many of his resident advisees. His commitment to education was only surpassed by his dedication to his patients.

He embraced the role of patient advocate and is skilled in one of the most challenging areas of medicine—end-of-lifecare.Familieshavebenefitedfrom Dr. Graham's wisdom, compassion, and composure along the journey of terminal disease and hospice care. He has enabled both patients and their

lovedonestofindpeaceanddignityduringlife'sdarkesthours.

Dr. Halstead has been a dedicated leader to the IndianaUniversityofSchoolofNursing(IUSN).Sheserved as professor and executive associate dean for academicaffairsfromAugust2004untilJuly2013.Dr. Halstead also served as the inaugural director of the center for Interprofessional Health Education. In addition, she served as the associate director of theOfficeofOnlineEducationandthedirectoroftheOfficeofOnlineEducationforIndianaUniversityPurdueUniversityIndianapolis(IUPUI).

Within the School of Nursing, Dr. Halstead provided visionary leadership, and her contributions lead to many innovations within the nursing program and online education program for the university. Her

Dr. Lappas has a long history of department and university service, including a history of dedication to the education and enrichment of our trainees. He was involved for several years in the Radiology Residency Core Curriculum Committee and the Radiology Residency Screening and Interview Committee. He also has served a variety of teaching roles, including daily instruction of residents and fellows. He has taught at noon conference, participated in board review sessions, and served as a mock board examiner.

Dr. Lappas has also been an integral part of our growth and development as a department, serving asamemberofthePrimaryPromotionandTenureCommitteeandchairingthatcommitteefrom 2000 to 2010. He not only has been an essential part of our growth as a department but alsoourgrowthasauniversity,servingontheIUPUIFacultyCouncilforyearsandalsothroughmembershipontheIUSMFacultyPromotionandTenureCommittee.Hewasatirelessmentortofaculty regarding their academic achievement and a strong advocate for their advancement.

Wei-Hua Lee is a native of Beijing, China, with an undergraduate degree in medicine from the Capital InstituteofMedicalSciences(1982)andaPh.D.degreeinpharmacologyfromtheIndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicine(1989).Shecompletedtwoyearsof postdoctoral training at Eli Lilly & Company as a clinicalresearchassociate(1988to1990)andtwoadditional years at the National Institute of Child Health in Bethesda, Maryland, as a pharmacology researchassociatefrom1990to1992.

AfterreturningtotheIUSchoolofMedicine,Wei-Hua had the opportunity to establish herself as a neuroscientistintheDepartmentofPediatrics,Section of Neonatal Medicine, and later in the Stark

Neuroscience Institute. Her primary research focus was on hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in newborn patients, a neonatal disease that has high mortality and morbidity. Overthepast23years,shehasmadesignificantcontributionstowardsrevealingnovel mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic injury to developing brains as well as towards developing a potential treatment for this devastating disease. In this process, Wei-Hua obtained multiple major grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and other organizations that greatly facilitated her research. In the meantime,shealsoservedasanNIHgrantreviewerfrom1995to2015andpublishedover60high-qualityresearcharticlesinpeer-reviewedjournals.

Wei-Huaenjoysteachingandisaneffectiveteacherinandoutoftheclassroom.Shehastaught Developmental Neurobiology and Neuroanatomy at graduate and professional levels. In addition, a number of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows were trained in her laboratory and now work in medical and neuroscience research in China and the UnitedStates.OnJanuary1,2016,Wei-HuaretiredfromtheIUSchoolofMedicineDepartmentofPediatricstopursueherotherinterests.

Katherine Roscoe Levin, M.D., Ph.D. AssociateProfessorofAnesthesiaIUSchoolofMedicine

Kathy Levin was born in St. Joseph, Missouri; attendedhighschoolinFarmingdale,NewYork;and earned a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University,graduatingMagnaCumLaude.AtSyracuse,KathywasinductedintothePhiEpsilonPhihonorsociety.ShesubsequentlyobtainedaPh.D.inPharmacologyfromtheUniversityofChicago,attended medical school there, and followed with an internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesiologyatNorthwesternUniversity.Kathyremained at Northwestern to complete a fellowship in obstetrical anesthesia which was to remain her passion throughout her career.

After her fellowship, Kathy joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia, serving as the director of Obstetrical Anesthesia. In 1988,shewasrecruitedtotheDepartmentofAnesthesiaatIndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicinewhereshehasbeenatrustedandrespectedcolleaguefor28years.KathybecamedirectorofObstetricalAnesthesiain1999and,inthatrole,hasdonemuchtoadvanceresidenteducationandimprovewomen’shealthinIndiana.

WhileleadingtheobstetricalanesthesiaserviceatIndianaUniversityHospital,Kathyenergetically promoted the adoption of best practices, including improved anesthetic drugs,equipment,andtechniquesastheybecameavailable.Sheinsistedonprovidingpatients with optimal comfort and safety, respecting the needs and wishes of each as an individual. Kathy stressed the importance of keeping aware of the current status of the laboring patient in order to be prepared to deal with any contingency.

Kathy could always be counted upon to be familiar with the most current knowledge in obstetrical anesthesia. This, and her considerable experience in dealing with obstetrical patients, including the highest risk mothers and neonates, made her a valued resource when other anesthesiologists were faced with these challenging patients. Her clinical advice and dedication to her patients and her residents will be missed.

Dr.Mikeskyhasreceivedseveralcampus(FACET,ChancellorsTeachingAward)andschoolteachingawards(Trustees’TeachingAwards)andhasbeenrecognizedforhisworkwithundergraduateresearchstudentsoftheIUPUIDiversityResearchScholarProgram.HeisaFellowoftheAmericanCollegeofSportsMedicine,themostrecognizedinternationalorganizationintheexercisesciencefield.Dr.Mikeskypublishedtwopopulartextbooks,“PhysicalFitness:AWayofLife”and“PracticalApplicationsinSportNutrition”andhasbeenasuccessfulresearcherwithover80peer-reviewedscholarlypublications and numerous grants. Over the years, Dr. Mikesky has been a reviewer for leading professional journals in sport performance and conditioning and has served as a consultant for collegiate, national, and professional sports organizations. Dr. Mikesky istheepitomeofateacher-scholar;heisdedicatedtothedeliveryofhigh-qualityundergraduate and graduate education. He also pursued an active research agenda that enriched his teaching and student learning experiences.

Linda Marler studied medical technology at the IndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicine(B.S.1973)andalliedhealtheducationattheIndianaUniversitySchoolofEducation(M.S.1978).Shejoinedourfacultyasanassistantprofessorin1978andwaspromoted to associate professor, with tenure, in 1984.ShewascertifiedbytheAmericanSocietyofClinicalPathologistsasamedicaltechnologistin1973andasaspecialistinclinicalmicrobiologyin1978.

Linda has taught medical microbiology in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences program throughout her career andwonteachingawardsforthisworkin1984,1995,1998,2001,2005,and2006.Shewastherecipient

ofanIndianaUniversityTeachingExcellenceRecognitionAwardin1998.Lindaservedas codirector of the clinical laboratory sciences program from 2006 until her retirement. Throughout her career, Linda was active with the South Central Association for Clinical Microbiology in many capacities. She has served on the board of directors for 33 years.

Linda reached out to the clinical laboratory science teachers of the world with an innovative series of compact disks of photographs of microorganisms, including both their growth properties on various nutrient media as seen with the naked eye and their microscopic appearances. As a complement to the series of compact disks, she developed a series of posters and bench aids in microbiology, urinalysis, and hematology to be used by instructors and by practicing medical technologists. The excellence of the images in her compact disk series can be seen on the walls and in the conference rooms of FairbanksHallofIUPUIwheretheywereselectedtobekeyelementsofthedécorofthebuilding.

Dr.PhilipOuellettejoinedthefacultyattheIndianaUniversitySchoolofSocialWorkin2002,readyto push the use of online education to a new level. He had become one of the early leaders in the online education movement nationally while at the UniversityofSouthFloridainTampa,Florida.Hiseffortscombinedface-to-faceclasseswithonlinematerial.“Myinterestwastodosomethingfullyonline,”Dr.Ouellettesaid.

Dr. Ouellette, who received his doctorate degree ineducationalpsychologyfromLavalUniversityinQuebec,Canada,didhisdissertationontheimpactoftraining family therapists on organizational change. Online education was already a big issue in Canada

whereeducatorsbelieveddevelopingtechnologywasawaytobetterserveCanada’sruralpopulation.However,onlineeducationwasrelativelynewtothesocialworkfield.Dr.Ouellette was one of the early advocates for introducing online practice courses in social work.

SchoolofSocialWorkDeanMichaelPatchnerhadasimilarinterestinseeingtheschoolbecome more involved in online education and hired Dr. Ouellette to help make it happen. The idea was still a novel concept for social work, and Dr. Ouellette started out by transferring his practice social work classes to an online format.

Dr. Ouellette then worked on the development of online courses in the M.S.W. program. At the time, online education was considered controversial. Some people felt it could not bedoneandquestionedthequalityofonlinecourses.ToquoteDr.Ouellette,“IlearnedalothereatIUabouthowtoimprovetheonlinedeliveryofmyownpracticeclasses.”

Dr. Ouellette encouraged others to work with him to develop an entire program online. WiththecontinuedsupportofDeanPatchnerandotherfacultycolleagues,thiseffortresultedinMSWDirect,theschool’scompletelyonlineM.S.W.degreeprogram.MSWDirect debuted in December of 2012 and now has more than 200 students enrolled who lived in 16 time zones.

Grant Nicol grew up in southern California and attendedUniversityofCaliforniaIrvineasabiologymajor.HereceivedhisPh.D.inphysiologyfromYaleUniversitywhereheexaminedsignalingpathways involved in visual transduction with Dr. William Miller. He did postdoctoral fellowships at theUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyandattheUniversityofWisconsinstudyingphotoreceptorsandcGMPsignaling.GrantwasrecruitedtotheDepartmentofPharmacologyandToxicologyatIndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicine(IUSM)in1988andwaspromotedtofullprofessorwithtenure in 2001. Between 2006 and 2016, he was the ShowalterProfessorofPharmacologyandToxicology.

Grant’sresearchfocusedonmechanismsunderlyinghypersensitivityofsensoryneurons,workwithstrongtranslationaltiestoinflammatoryandneuropathicpain.Hemaintainedcontinuousfundingbetween1994and2016withnumerousgrantsfrom the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and the American Heart Association. His seminal work on signaling pathways that mediate the actions of prostaglandins and the importance of potassium channels in regulating the excitability ofsensoryneuronsareamonghismajorcontributionsandsolidifiedhisprominentnationalandinternationalreputation.WhileatIUSM,GrantNicolhasbeenregardedasan outstanding electrophysiologist, rigorous scientist, and a stellar colleague. His work askedimportantquestionsaboutfundamentalphysiologicalmechanismsandhasbeenpublishedinhighlyrespectedjournalsincludingNature,JournalofPhysiology(London),and Journal of Neuroscience.

Grant Nicol has also been highly regarded as both a challenging teacher and a sage mentor. He made substantial contributions to teaching in pharmacology and toxicology where he chaired the Student Advisory Committee as well as to the Medical NeurosciencesPh.D.graduateprogramwhichhedirectedforseveralyears.Hementorednumerous predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees as well as junior faculty. Grant had high expectations for his students and mentees but was also widely valued for his sense of humor, his compassion, and his dedication to research and teaching. His contributions will be greatly missed.

KenRennelsjoinedIUPUIin1986asanassistantprofessor of computer integrated manufacturing technology after working in the industry for 11 years. Hemadesignificantcontributionstothemechanicalengineering technology and engineering technology departments involving laboratories, curriculum, and new degree programs. He was the director ofIUPUI’sElectricVehicleRacingprogramfrom1994to2004.Startingin1998,Kenservedasthechair to the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology and then as associate dean of the School

of Engineering and Technology. He developed and served as director of the Master of TechnologyFacilitiesManagementProgramwhichisoneofthefewonlinegraduatedegreesintheworldaccreditedbytheInternationalFacilitiesManagementAssociation.Ken has been active on the national level for the advancement of engineering technology education.

He has held numerous leadership positions within Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, our accrediting body. Ken has served as treasurer of the Engineering TechnologyDivision(ETD)ofAmericanSocietyforEngineeringEducation,asamemberof the ETD Executive Committee, and as general chair for the Conference for Industry andEducationconferencesin2006and2014.Hehasservedaschairandexecutiveboardmember of the Engineering Technology Leadership Institute.

Ken also serves in several professional societies, including the Society of Manufacturing Engineers,theSocietyofAutomotiveEngineers,andtheAmericanFoundrySociety.HeservesasIUPUI’sliaisontotheIndianaStateBoardofRegistrationforProfessionalEngineersandasproctorfortheexamforover15years.HisservicetoIUPUIhasincludedservingastheschool’sfacultysenatepresidentandontheIUPUIFacultyCouncil Executive Committee.

He passed along his love of dental hygiene to those graduates.Hehadsomuchpatiencetoteachinstrumentationskillstostudents.Idon’tthink it will be possible to replace him, his patience or his leadership. We miss him dearly.Hehasalwaysbeenthestudent’sfavoritehygienefacultymember,andanyonewho knows him will understand why.

Dr. Connie Rowles is an accomplished nurse educator. She is a well-known expert in clinical preceptortrainingandcapstonecurriculum.Foryears,shecoordinatedtheIUSchoolofNursingcapstone clinical experience for senior nursing students. She developed a partnership model of preceptor teaching and conducted analysis on

preceptorandstudentoutcomes.ShepreviouslyreceivedfundingfromIUPUIandClarianHealthPartners(nowIUHealth)toadvanceherscholarshipincapstoneeducation. Her capstone course syllabi and publications on how to reward clinical preceptors and the use of Internet databases for students to match their clinical preceptorshavebeenwellreadbynurseeducatorsintheUnitedStates,Canada,Australia,andPakistan.TheIUSchoolofNursingcontinuestoadopthercapstonemodelafter her retirement.

In addition to capstone coordination, Dr. Rowles also has expertise in nursing management and leadership. She taught undergraduate and graduate nursing leadership, management,andadministrationcourses.Shementoredmaster’sstudentsandguidedtheir projects such as job satisfaction of registered nurses and head nurse management style.ShewasamemberoftheIndianaUniversityFacultyColloquiumonExcellenceinTeachingandafellowoftheIUSchoolCenterforExcellenceinTeaching.

Teacher, artist, innovator, colleague, collaborator, andtruefriend.Oneoftheoriginalmaster’sstudentsin the Media Arts and Science program and one ofthefirstfacultymembershiredbytheSchoolofInformaticsandComputing(SoIC),ProfessorTennant is beloved by students and respected by faculty,staff,andcommunityleadersbothhereandabroad. She has excelled at extending the concept of media arts to a wide variety of applications and using it to reconsider her own particular discipline of sculpture. Among her many achievements was bringing a variety of experts to campus whose focus was on interactive art. The group included Theo Jansenwithhismassive“Strandbeest”sculpturesthatwalked under their own power which was the genesis

ofourschool’ssuccessfulcolloquiaseries.

ProfessorTennantsuccessfullycompetedforaCreativeRenewalArtsFellowshipfromthe Arts Council of Indianapolis, traveling to a variety of sculpture gardens and museums and presenting, using this experience to propel her evolution as an artist forward. ProfessorTennantwasinthefirstcohortofstudentstobeadmittedtothenewsculptureM.F.A.programattheHerronSchoolofArtandDesign,usingthisdegreeasadditionalinspiration and a launching point for continued creativity, which is now culminating in invitations to display her work in various galleries. Rod Suthers retires from the School of Medicine–Bloomington(MedicalSciencesProgram)after51yearsofsignificantcontributionstotheresearch,teaching, and service missions of the university.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Rod completed the B.A. with honors in zoology from Ohio Wesleyan Universityin1960wherehisdeepinterestinanimalbehavior, bioacoustics, motor control, and muscle physiologybegan.HecompletedtheA.M.andPh.D.degreesinbiologyin1961and1964,respectively,fromHarvardUniversity.RodjoinedIndianaUniversityasanassistantprofessorin1965androsetofullprofessorin1976.Heiscurrentlyprofessorof cellular and integrative physiology, professor of

neuroscience in the Center for Neural Sciences, and adjunct professor of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Rod has had an outstanding career in production and acoustic communication, biosonar signal production, and motor correlates of vocal learning in juvenile songbirds. His work hashighlightedtheneuroethologyofacousticcommunicationinover105publications,book chapters, and books.

Rod’srecentresearchhasfocusedonthephysiologyofsongproductioninsongbirdsandparrots.Thesetwogroupsofbirds,togetherwithhumans,arealmostuniqueamong animals in having a complex vocal communication in which learning plays an important role. The exceptional vocal abilities of these birds enable investigation of basic problems related to the development and neural control of behavior. Some of these issues include the development and coordination of the diverse motor patterns during vocal learning; the role of vocal practice, analogous to human infant babbling; and of critical developmental periods in song learning. The value of his work was recognized by the NationalInstitutesofHealthandtheNationalScienceFoundationinthathehashadcontinuousfederalsupportofhisresearchsince1966.

Over the years, Rod has maintained productive, long-term research and teaching relationshipswithfacultyandstaff.WewishRodcongratulationsonanoutstandingcareer and best wishes for a wonderful retirement.

Each of his publications constitutes the culmination of painstaking, time-consuming work. Beyond being exemplars of clarity and informativeness, these aredocumentsofrigorousscholarship.Foryears,Tilley focused on ethical theory—cultural relativism, psychologicalegoism,andthequestionofwhyoneshould be moral. And more recently, adding a new domain of expertise, he has become a world expert ontheBritishmoralphilosophers(e.g.,Hutcheson,Wollaston,Hume),publishinginpremieroutletsin the history of philosophy. The following number

Allthewhile,ProfessorTilleyhasgenuinelydedicatedhimselftoourstudents.Notonlywerehisinstructorevaluationsoffthecharts—scoresof4.9/5.0and5.0/5.0beingwhollytypical for him—he passionately embraced the role of personal mentor and friend to students. And his campus, school, and departmental service, especially as our chair, has been unbounded, with immeasurable impact on the careers of many faculty. There is not amemberofthedepartmentwhohasnotbenefitedfromTilley’swisdomandmentorship.And, notably, he has conscientiously and successfully nurtured a strong and, frankly, rare camaraderie among his fellow philosophy faculty.

UntilheretiredfromIndianaUniversityinDecember2015tobecomethefoundingchairmanoftheDepartmentofPopulationHealthattheDellMedicalSchooloftheUniversityofTexasatAustin,Dr.TierneyhadbeenpartoftheIUSchoolofMedicine(IUSM)communityfor43years.Tolistallofhiscontributions and accolades would take many more pages than allotted here, so what follows is a very small selection.

Bill’stimeatIUSMgoesbacktohistrainingasamedical student, resident, chief resident, and fellow ininformatics(1972to1982).Afacultymemberfor35years,Dr.Tierney’simpacthasbeenfar-reachingand lasting, crossing many disciplines and partner

institutions on campus and beyond, including the Wishard/Eskenazi Health System, RoudebushVAHospital,IU-Kenyaprogram,andRegenstriefInstitute.Heworkedinand at the interface of the disciplines of biomedical informatics, health services research, qualityimprovement,andglobalhealthresearch.Dr.Tierney’scontributionsincludedbeing the founding director of multiple programs such as the Biomedical Informatics ResearchFellowship,theCenterforHealthServicesandOutcomesResearch(nowrenamedinhishonor)andoneofthefirstandmostproductivepractice-basedresearchnetworks that became a model for the nation. Throughout, Dr. Tierney remained a teacher, mentor to many, and dedicated clinician at Wishard.

He served as the course director for both the gross anatomy course and the clinical gross anatomy electiveofferedattheIUSchoolofMedicine-FortWayne.

Joelwaspromotedtoassociateprofessorin1987andfullprofessorin1992.Heservedtheuniversityin many capacities throughout his career, including interimdirectorattheFortWaynecampusfrom2005to2007.Hehasmanypublicationsandhasauthored

several books. Most recently, he coauthored a radiological atlas that compares radiograph imagestoNetter’sanatomicaldrawings.

Throughout his career, Joel concentrated on providing the best educational experiences forhisstudents.HeincorporatedultrasonographyandiPadtechnologyintohiscoursesand invited physicians to provide lectures as an additional means to emphasize the clinical relevance of the materials presented in class. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, although the most cherished is the success of his students. In addition to teaching the students, Joel mentored several students and coauthored many publications.

Michael Vasko is a Michigan native who attended the UniversityofMichigan,earninganundergraduatedegreeinnaturalscienceandaPh.D.inpharmacology.FollowinghisPh.D.,hebecameastaffpharmacologist at the VA Medical Center in Dallas withanappointmentinneurologyattheUniversityofTexasHealthScienceCenterinDallas(UTHSCD).Hethen moved to Cambridge for an opportunity to train with Dr. Marthe Vogt, a leading neuroscientist of the 20th century. He returned to Dallas as chief of the pharmacology section in the VA and as an assistant professorofpharmacologyatUTHSCDwhereheestablished the framework to investigate how the sensitivity of peripheral sensory neurons is regulated.

MichaelwasrecruitedtotheIndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicine(IUSM)in1988asanassociateprofessorintheDepartmentofPharmacologyandToxicology.Hewaspromotedtofullprofessorin1993andreceivedthePaulStarkEndowedProfessorshipin1994.In2002,MichaelwasselectedtobethechairoftheDepartmentofPharmacologyand Toxicology. He was an enthusiastic leader who worked diligently to ensure the successofhisfaculty.Michaeliswellknownforhisspontaneousvisitstofacultyofficeswhich stimulated communication and understanding of what each scientist needed to be successful in his or her research.

Michael greatly impacted the study of peripheral pain mechanisms by pioneering the utilization of in vitro cultures to study signal transduction mechanisms that alter neuronalsensitivity.HemaintainedconstantNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH)fundingthroughouthiscareerandwaswellrecognizedasanexpertinthefield,servingonseveralNIHstudysectionsandreceivingtheOutstandingAlumnusAwardfromUniversityofMichiganandtheBenjaminG.CovinoawardfromHarvardUniversity.Inadditionto his success in research, Michael was an inspiring mentor to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and spent countless hours training his mentees the art of critical thinking. He received numerous teaching awards throughout his career, including the Trustees’TeachingAwardfromtheIndianaUniversitySchoolofMedicine.

George Willis is an Indiana native, earning his B.S. degreefromPurdueUniversityin1974andhisD.D.S.degreein1979fromtheIndianaUniversitySchoolofDentistry(IUSD).Healsocompletedgraduate studies in operative dentistry at Indiana University.

Dr. Willis has had a distinguished 36-year career in dental education. He became a full-time faculty memberin1980andtaughtclinicaldentistryfor many years with an emphasis on operative dentistry, dental auxiliary utilization and practice administration, while continuing to maintain his privatepractice.George’smultifacetedtalentsledhimtobechosentobethefirstchairoftheDepartmentof Restorative Dentistry which encompassed

multipleareasoftrainingforD.D.S.studentsandleadtothedevelopmentofIUSD’sComprehensive Care Clinics which were on the forefront of a national trend to move awayfromsiloeddentaleducation.Ultimately,Georgewasrecruitedtobetheassociatedeanforclinicalaffairs,apositionwhichhehasheldmostablyfor19years.

Dr. Willis has also been honored as an outstanding teacher and was elected to several prestigious academies including the American College of Dentists, American Association ofDentalExaminers,andOmicronKappaUpsilonHonorSociety,amongseveralothers.

PerhapsunknowntomanyisthatGeorgeisoneoftheforemostnon-veterinariananimaldentists in the country. This is one of his passions, and he serves as a dental consultant toseverallargezoosintheUnitedStates,includingtheBrookfieldZooinChicagoandrighthereathomeattheIndianapolisZoo.Hetreatsallcomersfromlemurstotigerstoelephants.

George will be sorely missed. Over the years, in his patient and dedicated manner, he has enhanced the professional lives of countless dental students. We wish him success and happiness in his retirement!

KarenwasthefirstgraduateofthepediatricsurgicaltrainingprogramatIndianaUniversity,havingcompleted her medical school and surgical residency atIU.Shejoinedthefacultyin1984andwillretirewith over 31 years on the faculty. Karen has been the consummate academic pediatric surgeon with contributions in all aspects of the academic mission.

She has been a remarkable surgeon, impacting the lives of thousands of children and their families, particularly with her development and longtime leadership of both the Biliary Atresia Multidisciplinary Clinic and the Extracorporeal MembraneOxygenation(ECMO)programwhichshehasledsinceitsinceptionin1986.Shehasbeenascholarrecognizednationallythroughher98peer-

reviewedpublicationsand8bookchaptersandfrequentappearancesonthepodiumatnational and regional meetings.

In addition, she has been a remarkable teacher of medical students and residents who have been inspired over the years by her humility, her gentle spirit, her encyclopedic knowledge, and her skill at always placing the learner agenda ahead of her own. Karen's contributions to the institution over the years has been exceptional, including notable serviceontheIndianaUniversityFacultyCouncilaswellasservingaspresidentoftheFacultySteeringCommitteefrom1997to1998.ShealsoservedontheFacultyGrievanceCommitteeandtheFacultyPromotionandTenureCommittee.

Hermostimpressivecontribution,however,maybeher24yearsofserviceontheExecutive Committee of the Student Admissions Committee. She has served as cochair of the Admissions Committee for the last six years.

an active participant in four community-based activities emphasizing tobacco-related health problemsandcontrol.HerepresentedIUSDontheIndianaCancerConsortiumTobacco-RelatedCancersCommittee.HeisamemberoftheIndianaPublicHealthAssociation,American Dental Education Association, and the American Academy of the History of Dentistry. As a clinician, he provides dental care to high-risk patients for the Marion County Health Department,Indianapolis.HehasbeendirectorofthePecarSpecialCareDentalClinicsince1995.

OneofDr.Zitterbart’ssignificanteducationalcontributionstotheIUSDcurriculumwasaformaldidacticcourseintheHistoryofDentistry2007-2016.Onlyaveryfewdentalschoolscurrentlyprovideanyformaltraininginthistopic.Dr.PaulA.Zitterbarthas,overtheyears,becomeanexemplary dental historian and teacher who has taken a great deal of pleasure and interest in presenting the fascinating and important historical aspects of our great profession.
