Tara F. Kelly Vice President Monmouth Medical Center Foundation
This was a year of strong accomplishments for
Monmouth Medical Center Foundation. We thank
our Board of Trustees, supporters, and especially,
our philanthropic leaders for their generosity and
unwavering commitment to the health of our community and our
region’s leading hospital – Monmouth Medical Center (MMC).
Foundation Board members and staff work tirelessly to raise funds
that benefit Monmouth Medical Center and the community it
serves. Our success over the past year is evident in the many
capital projects currently being unveiled throughout our campus.
Notably, the Hiriar and Anna Hovnanian Foundation Regional
Newborn Center, the region’s largest state-designated Level III
NICU, with one of the highest survival rates in the country, was
completed and opened in 2013.
MMC proudly delivers more babies than any hospital in
Monmouth and Ocean counties, and the third most within the
state. To serve families in our community and their growing
needs, the Foundation is currently funding an ambitious
expansion of the Eisenberg Family Center, to include additional
private postpartum rooms, as well as the second Scire Family
Nursery for newborns.
To our oncology patients and their families, MMC will dedicate
the new Cheryl L. Diamond Cancer Care Pavilion in 2014. This
will centralize the many facets of our cancer care programs and
services for over 50,000 patient visits annually.
Of the many awards we received last year, we were perhaps most
thrilled and honored to have been chosen by the Asbury Park
Press readers as “the best of the best” hospital in Monmouth
County. This award speaks to the community’s confidence in
Monmouth Medical Center’s stellar and compassionate care.
The pages which follow chronicle the accomplishments and the
opportunities before us. Please join us in celebrating the past year and
looking forward to the future of OUR Monmouth Medical Center. n

Ann Unterberg Board Chair Monmouth Medical Center Foundation
The merger will result
in seamless access to
Monmouth Medical Center’s
renowned specialty
services, particularly
in the areas of
geriatrics, oncology
and neurology.
in 2013, Monmouth Medical Center once again took impressive steps to maintain its position as the
region’s leading health care provider. The milestones attained during the past year serve to affirm
Monmouth’s commitment to excellence in clinical quality and performance improvement.
Monmouth was awarded straight A’s for hospital safety for the second consecutive year by The Leapfrog Group, an
independent national nonprofit organization. We were also once again voted the Best Hospital in Monmouth County
by the readers of The Asbury Park Press newspaper.
Also in 2013, Monmouth Medical Center joined forces with Spirit of Women, an elite coalition of American hospitals
and health care providers that ascribes to high standards of excellence in women’s health, education, and commu-
nity outreach. The renaming of our renowned children’s hospital to The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth
Medical Center in recognition of a major gift made by Ann and Thomas Unterberg was another significant highlight
of the year.
Among the new programs that debuted in 2013 was a Sudden Onset Seizure Clinic, developed by Monmouth
Medical Center’s Neuroscience Institute to provide newly diagnosed seizure patients with an expedited evaluation by
an epilepsy specialist. Monmouth Medical Center hosted its first Matthew J. Morahan Screening event, to provide
education, evaluation and assessment of sports injury and sports-related cardiac and concussion screenings. We also
dedicated the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center at Lakewood, marking another milestone for the Wilentz Center.
We became the first hospital in central and southern
New Jersey to introduce robotic-assisted partial knee
resurfacing and total hip replacement procedures
known as Makoplasty. This latest example of
pioneering robotic surgery at Monmouth Medical
Center came on the heels of the hospital’s milestone
of performing its 2,000th robotic surgery!
In an effort to raise awareness of cancer in all its
forms and educate the public about the importance
of early detection and prevention, Monmouth
Medical Center launched a unique cancer awareness
campaign designed to strengthen the fight against
every form of cancer. Roll Out The Ribbons is our
long-term awareness campaign designed to bring
together the surrounding communities in the fight
against all types of cancer.
Barnabas Health announced its plans in January
2014, to merge Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood
with Monmouth Medical Center to create an
integrated, regionalized, two campus partnership.
This new network of care will establish a stronger
health care delivery model for the future and expand
outpatient services to better manage the health of
the populations served.
As we grow and expand, we will continue to focus
on quality and innovation, and lead the region in
providing the very best health and wellness care
available. n

LEADING THE WAY
p hilanthropy is frequently understood to mean an act or gift done or made for humanitarian
purposes. Yet Monmouth Medical Center’s (MMC) philanthropic leaders are more inclined to
align themselves with the second, lesser known definition—love of humanity.
The dedicated philanthropists and leaders featured here are committed to Monmouth Medical Center and
know the meaning of philanthropy first hand. They value their engagement in the community and share
among them a goal of raising philanthropic awareness for the programs and services at the Medical Center.
These individuals have taken the position to lead, engage and make a difference. Their collaborative actions
share with YOU, our supporters and the community, the mission of Monmouth Medical Center.
Our leaders value state-of-the art medical care, cutting-edge technology and equipment, quality health
care education, and the most accomplished medical personnel. Through their gifts, and yours, we meet
the needs of the community by working closely with the hospital to facilitate awareness and provide stellar
family-centered medical care.
We are truly grateful for our community leaders, who are dedicated to advancing the quality of medical
care in our area. Their unwavering commitment to the hospital and the community is greatly appreciated. n
“The quality of care at
Monmouth Medical Center is
truly exceptional. Every staff member,
from the housekeepers to the nurses
and dieticians are all kind and friendly.
It is an uplifting experience to be there
as a patient or as a family member! ”– Morgan E. Cline, Monmouth Medical Center Foundation trustee, honorary chair, Capital Campaign

is one of many footprints morgan Cline
left in our community. What he gave to
the hospital will forever be remembered
for generations to come. Morgan’s tenacity,
mentoring and strength of spirit created
a bond with the hospital and its staff that will be
forever missed.

D id you know that some of monmouth medical Center’s most
effective caregivers are “Man’s Best Friend”? We have twelve dogs of
diverse breeds in our Pet Therapy Program that enhance the healing
process for patients of all ages by reducing stress for both the patients
and their families. Monmouth Medical Center’s (MMC) team of volunteer handlers and
therapy animals provide positive interactions that bring unconditional love from an animal
to the bedside, which contributes to the emotional and physical healing process. Interacting
with a dog has been shown to improve cardiovascular health and diminish overall physical
pain. Mental benefits include decreased depression, lowered anxiety, decreased feelings of
isolation, increased socialization, and reduced boredom.
Pet therapy dogs have been in The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical
Center since 2007. In fact, one of MMC’s first therapists, Tilly, was recently inducted into the
New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association’s Animal Hall of Fame for her devotion to MMC’s
patients. From the first moment Tilly waddled into the front doors of the hospital, she acted
like a veteran. She licked sad faces, sat patiently waiting for a squeeze from the children,
and she never wavered when machines started to beep loudly next to her. Her human
partner reports, “It seemed that Tilly was as comfortable within the chaos of a hospital as if
she were lying on her favorite chair in our quiet home.”
Tilly has been at MMC long enough to establish deep and meaningful relationships with
both patients and their families. One pediatric patient was in treatment for years, with
multiple inpatient stays. Tilly and the young patient grew quite close, and Tilly was with the
family during the patient’s final days.
The patient’s family requested the comfort of Tilly at the wake. Tilly attended and stood quietly
on the altar before resting at the foot of the casket, guarding the patient in rest. The therapy
dog was then able to stay and help soothe everyone at the wake, especially the children. Tilly’s
handler reports that this was one of her most difficult, but rewarding experiences.
The Pet Therapy Program has proven to benefit the dogs, as well. Kahlua, a chocolate
Labrador-Retriever mix joined the program after being rescued from an abandoned
warehouse in South Carolina. She had multiple broken bones and lacerations. The
Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals heard about the puppy
and had her transferred and treated at their Eatontown shelter. After a lengthy recovery, she
was adopted by Margie Pardes, who soon realized that Kahlua’s temperament would make
her an ideal therapy dog. Kahlua and Margie have been a Monmouth Medical Center team
ever since, frequently working in the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center,
where Margie’s husband, Dr. Jorge Pardes, is a diagnostic radiologist and director of Breast
Imaging at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center.
In 2013, the pet therapy program was fortunate to receive philanthropic grants from the
Monmouth Park Charity Fund and the Jersey Shore Greek Festival Outreach Fund. External
funding is essential as we seek to expand the program and add more loving paws to provide
unconditional love, support, and comfort to children and adults. n

W e know that a children’s hospital isn’t just a building; it is also the people within that building
working together for the wellness of your children. The newly formed The Unterberg Children’s
Hospital Leadership Council, believes that happy and healthy children are our future. The
Council supports The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center’s commitment to
pediatric excellence by advocating for the health and wellness of children in our community.
This February, the Council hosted its first educational event on a subject that has captured the attention of
virtually every parent: Raising Confident Children in a Social Media World. The speakers, Mary Harris, a specialist
professor of public relations at Monmouth University, and Mike Seeley, RN with Barnabas Health, addressed
how social media has revolutionized the way our world communicates and, in turn, the way our children
learn, develop and interact. In this dynamic presentation, parents gained helpful suggestions for implementing
safe practices at home and embracing this interactive media for the great learning opportunities it can offer.
The Unterberg Children’s Hospital’s Leadership Council continues to advocate, educate and raise awareness of the
hospital’s programs and services. Look for future events this year. n

Tim and Beth mcLoone, longtime supporters of Monmouth Medical Center,
decided to launch a special initiative in 2013 that raised both awareness and
critical funds for The Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood
Disorders at The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at monmouth medical
Center. Their son, Jack, was successfully treated for leukemia at the Valerie
Center. During such a trying time, both parents took comfort in the fact that
their son’s treatment was close to home. This was a tremendous help during the
most critical stages of his care.
Despite their losses from Superstorm Sandy, the McLoones persisted with their
plans. All the McLoone’s restaurants participated in the fundraising and awareness
drive throughout 2013 including: Pier House in Long Branch, Boat House in West
Orange, CJ McLoone’s in Tinton Falls, McLoone’s Asbury Grille, Tim McLoone’s
Supper Club, Asbury, McLoone’s Bayonne Grill, and McLoone’s Woodbridge.
The staff at each restaurant worked closely with the staff at the Monmouth
Medical Center Foundation to raise funds through events, restaurant sales, and
such promotional items as t-shirts and pins, which were sold to highlight the
fundraising campaign. All of us at the Foundation and in the Valerie Center are
grateful to the McLoones for this initiative. n
The Monmouth Medical Center Foundation was thrilled to receive a $1.5 million
charitable contribution from robert m. rechnitz, Ph.D., and Joan rechnitz,
Ph.D., to benefit The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center.
“Drs. Rechnitz have proven their dedication to the Monmouth County community
time and again through their philanthropic efforts,” said Tara F. Kelly, vice president,
Monmouth Medical Center Foundation. “We are so grateful for this generous gift,
which is just one more testament to their commitment to area residents.”
The Rechnitzes’ gift marks the first seven-figure contribution to The Unterberg
Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center since it was named after the
Unterbergs in September 2013. The donation will support the unrivaled pediatric
care provided by The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center,
and allow for facility renovations and refurbishments. Additionally, it will provide
patients and their families with a more comfortable environment, and an expanded
pediatric intensive care unit that will better serve hundreds of children each year. n

Here are several ways to consider making a gift:
n Designate a specific dollar amount or percentage in your will;
n Donate a specific asset, such as land, a second home, or stocks
and bonds held in a brokerage account;
n Create a trust to provide income for the hospital and have the
remainder go to your family, or create income for your family and
have the remainder go to the hospital;
n Name the Medical Center a beneficiary of all or a portion of your
retirement plan or life insurance policy;
n Receive back a guaranteed high rate of income by contributing to
a MMC gift annuity.
