HOMEWORK

In 2017 we will be reviewing student homework at Milgate PS. Recently members of our leadership team were lucky enough to attend a presentation by Alfie Kohn at Templestowe College. Alfie Kohn writes and speaks widely on human behaviour, education and parenting. His fascinating insights into progressive schools and choices for children were deeply thought provoking. He talked about homework and the research around this in terms of impact on student learning. The research and his presentation has caused us to reflect on student homework and the value of it in terms of student learning. We want to look at a different type of homework for 2017. Part of the homework will include Reading and Spelling for all year levels and the other part of homework will include activities / projects related to the Unit of Inquiry and some other suggestions. Further information will be available at the beginning of 2017. Alfie has written articles about Homework which are available on his website and he is the author of fourteen books and many other articles. If you would like to read any of his works, please go to http://www.alfiekohn.org/.

Yours sincerely, Debbie Mierisch | Principal Karlie Gooding | Assistant Principal

BIKE EDUCATION | Year 4

Our Year 4 students have been involved in their annual Bike Education Program during this past week. We have been extremely lucky with the weather and the students have all progressed extremely well. We had 6 students on Monday morning who couldn’t ride a bike and they are now up and riding. They went out on their first ride outside the school grounds on Wednesday. It is amazing to think that these students weren’t able to ride on Monday and are now quite confident on their bikes.

On Friday we have our ride/walk to Westerfolds Park, the students are really looking forward to this and it will be a great challenge. Many thanks to our Year 4 teachers and the parents who have assisted in making our 2016 Bike Education Program so successful. You support is greatly appreciated as always.

STUDENT REPORTS AND PORTFOLIOS

Teachers are currently writing student reports and these will be available for parents to access on COMPASS from Friday 16 December. Students will also take home their portfolios on Friday 16 December. The portfolios showcase the students’ learning and the students are looking forward to talking about their learning with their parents.
