The headline in The Washington Post March 2, 2011 read: Lt. Gen. John Kelly, who losthis son to war, says U.S. largely unaware of sacrifice.

No truer words have been spoken. Until recently, I could stand on one side of thatstatement and hang my head in shame because its clear he was speaking to me.

On February 27, 2011, Corporal Andrew Wilfarht, cousin to my husband, and son to Jeffand Lori Wilfahrt of Rosemount, Minn., was killed in Afghanistan.

This begins a story I did not know needed to be told.

An uncle of mine served in Vietnam. He survived, came home to receive a purple heartfor his efforts, and rarely spoke of it. Later, he would enter counseling, conqueralcoholism, and forgo having his own family because he didnt trust himself.

  • 8/7/2019 Military Resistance 9D 19 "Ten Years Is Long Enough"

    3/31

He has spent an entire lifetime battling the demons we civilians wont know by becominga counselor himself. He made several return trips to Vietnam, and later produced avideo for returning soldiers called, Coming Home.

My own cousin was a Marine and later became a part of The Green Berets, a specialforces unit of the Army. He served as the medic in his team and the trials he endured go

untold. We know he served the Bosnian refugees during their plight. Stories arerumored to be told of babies delivered in fields en route to escape. But hes alwayscome home.

I have friends with relatives in the service; other relatives whove served; and I wasshuffled along as a kid to the Memorial Day Parades and patriotic concerts around the4th of July; and like anyone, can describe in great detail what I was doing when thetowers fell.

What I cant explain is why I did nothing after the towers fell.

So enter Andrew Wilfahrt, a young man I met at various family gatherings with the

Wilfahrt crew. They are a silly bunch with a bit of a musical streak. Andrew was by farthe most gifted; composing and mastering the piano and clarinet and any otherinstrument he touched.

A stand-out memory includes my husband on guitar, mother-in-law on accordion, uncleon guitar, and Andrew on clarinet. It was Christmas and they were performing," but itwas so ridiculous that Andrew honked his clarinet consistently throughout due tolaughter. He didnt show off and gamely participated in mediocrity with the rest of thefamily band while we held our lighters aloft in delight.

Later, this same young mans eyes would sparkle as he played with my kids in a waythat suggested enjoyment rather than endurance.

When Andrew joined the Army, it was a surprise move made at the age of 29.

Hed done many things and gone many places and battled some of his own demons. His mother, Lori Wilfahrt, told Minnesota Public Radio her son was an interesting, wonderful young man who joined the service because he was looking for a purpose.Andrew wanted to be with a group of people that would be working together towardsomething.

Still, our thoughts werent firmly in place as to the enormity of the decision. Besides,Afghanistan and Iraq were like old wallpaper in the guest bathroom. Its there; no onelikes it; yet no one really pays attention to it.

This is not to say I didnt worry about his safety, but for months he was in Hawaiibored, sick of it, and thendeployment to Afghanistan. Our ears perked as werigorously paid attention to the news, but we would soon learn the price to pay forcomplacency.

I wouldnt consider myself a peace activist, yet who admits to being for war? But Ilearned, through a shocking introduction to icasualites.orgwhich tracks the deaths of

    4/31

all of our fallen soldiersthat I have been living foolishly under the assumption thatthey doesnt really mean me."

Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said it best in this email toa reporter from The Washington Post: I worry that we could wake up one day and theAmerican people will no longer know us, and we wont know them.

Later, in a speech given by Lt. General Kelly, he said, We are in a life-and-deathstruggle, but not our whole country. One percent of Americans are touched by this war. Then there is a much smaller club of families who have given all." He spoke of the angerthat some combat veterans feel toward the wars opponents. "They hold in disdain thosewho claim to support them but not the cause that takes their innocence, their limbs andeven their lives.

Lt. General Kelly then clarified in an interview that he is opposed to indifference, not dissent.

"I just think if you are against the war, you should somehow try to change it," he

said. "Fight to bring us home."

And this is where I am left.

I can no longer be indifferent after attending Andrews funeral, which was executed infull-on military style. Andrew would be the first to claim that his life was no moreimportant than anothers, but the Army clearly felt differently. There were high rankingmilitary officials in attendance along with Governor Dayton.

To look at that small box of Andrews remains surrounded by grieving family on a crispwinter day where 154 Patriot Riders stood at attention with a firm grasp on their flag isto be touched in a way that changes the shape of the heart.

The guns fired, Taps played, and sobs echoed throughout Fort Snelling.

I looked SPC Kevin Gill, Andrews platoon mate, in the eyes as he told me the story ofAndrews last patrol. Andrew was handing out candy to some Afghani children; childrenhe loved as much as any children hes met, and shooed them away. Platoon 3 marchedover 100 meters of control wire where three IEDs were remotely triggered. SPC Gillwalked over one and Andrew another. Only one of the three detonatedAndrews. Isoaked in SPC Gills pride and pain, and felt his tears while realizing this man is foreverchanged.

It seems disrespectful to return to life as we know when a bright, colorful, articulate,

gentle soul, is gone simply because he wanted to be part of something bigger.

I, too, want to be a part of something bigger. I want to be a part of a country that doesntlet those who are fighting for an idea that we take for granted every single day gounnoticed.

I want them to be remembered and respected and I want them to come home.

We, I think, have done our time in Afghanistan.

  • 8/7/2019 Military Resistance 9D 19 "Ten Years Is Long Enough"

    5/31

We have sacrificed too many to those who clearly cant find their way even with our help.

Ten years is long enough and every day the number of families and soldiers who willnever be the same increases.

Andrews platoon members went back to work within 36 hours of his death.

Its time for us to join those who have been trying to no avail. Contact yourrepresentatives. Attend a peace rally. Send an e-mail. Start a letter writing campaign.

As Jeff, Andrews father said, Prayers arent cutting it. Prayer has been going on sincethe beginning of time and clearly, its not enough. Join in being part of the message toour leaders that says it is time bring our soldiers home.

Please dont look away from the next headline. That wall paper is someones life.

The next name you see is also Andrews; his familys; my family; yours.

These are people whose hearts are in complete disrepair, and we owe themnothing less than our willingness to speak out on their behalf.

Andrew did it; I am trying. I need more to join me. To not do so is nothing lessthan shameful.

Two weeks ago, we reported that a national sit-in movement launched across Iraq. Thecity of Mosul in northern Iraq seems to have become the epicenter of the continuingprotests this week.

An estimated three hundred Iraqis initially set up tents in the northern Iraqi city ofMosul to demand an end to the U.S. occupation, the release of political prisoners,

rewriting of the constitution, and the departure of what they call the Green Zonegovernment, headed by Nouri al-Maliki.

Among the dozens of grassroots organizations calling for sit-ins in front of U.S. militarybases, two of the most prominent taking part in Mosul are the Popular Movement toSave Iraq and The Free Iraqis of Mosul.

Contingents of Iraqis from as far south as Nasiriyah and al-Basra are at the Mosulsit-in being held in what has become known as Prisoners Square.

The calls for nation-wide demonstrations in Iraq comes in the wake of high-ranking U.S.politicians including Senator Kerry, Vice President Biden, and most recently Secretary

Gates all implying that U.S. forces may stay past the December 2011 deadline.

Last week, Iraqi Facebook pages administered directly by protest organizers reportedthat government security forces encircled their camp, surveilled and taunted them, andcalled on them to end their sit-in.

Protesters also reported that a low-flying American military helicopter swept towards thedemonstrators, in what was interpreted as an attempt to intimidate them.

Their response, captured in the video below, was to throw dozens of shoes towards thehelicopter, and has prompted them to ask for an investigation into why this militaryvehicle was sent towards them.

Demonstrations have been joined by dozens of women, who are calling for theend of the U.S. occupation and the release of their sons and brothers who are heldin both Iraqi and US prisons throughout Iraq.

This week tribal chieftains from nearby Anbar province joined the Mosul protestsas well.

As of today, reports now estimate the growing crowds in Mosul to number in thethousands, comprised of many young people who were last seen marchingtoward the 4th bridge, where they were stopped by government troops preventingthem from going to the square to join with other protesters.

Demonstrators are insistent on continuing their sit-in until all their demands are met, foremost of which are:

Complete departure of the U.S. occupying forces.

No extension of the security agreement between the Maliki government and the

    U.S.

    The release of innocent prisoners.

We will keep you informed of new developments in this growing Iraqi protest movement.

ISLAMABAD: Thousands of people, led by Pakistani cricketer-turned politician ImranKhan, on Saturday blocked the main supply route for NATO troops in neighbouringAfghanistan to protest against the US drone strikes in the restive tribal regions.

Several opposition and Islamist groups as wells as tribal elders have backed the protestled by Imran, the chief of Tehrik-e-Insaf party (justice movement).

"I congratulate the people on the successful protest," Imran said, adding the people ofPakistan will continue to protest unless the US halts the strikes targeting the people.

He demanded that the government shut down the NATO supplies through Pakistan.

"Pakistan will not be made a servant of the United States," he said, asking thegovernment to quit the US-led efforts to combat the terrorism.

Ignore The Stupid Bullshit:Pfc Bradley Mannings Attorney

Explains Why He Was Moved FromQuantico To Fort Leavenworth; The Defense Was In The Process Of

Filing A Writ Of Habeas Corpus SeekingA Court Ruling That The Quantico BrigViolated Pfc Mannings Constitutional

    Right To Due Process

    www.bradleymanning

[While this is one dimension, there are also the thousands of activists who haveraised hell loudly and publicly about the hideous torments inflected on Manning atQuantico. The court process described below would have been unbearable forthe Obama regime against that background. T]

19 April 2011 Posted by Army Court-Martial Defense Specialist at 9:00; The Law Officeof David E. Coombs

Why Was PFC Manning Moved to Fort Leavenworth?

Like many others, the defense first learned of PFC Mannings move to FortLeavenworth, Kansas by reading that a government official, speaking on the condition ofanonymity, leaked the information to the Associated Press.

    http://www.bradleymanning/http://www.bradleymanning/http://www.bradleymanning/
  • 8/7/2019 Military Resistance 9D 19 "Ten Years Is Long Enough"

    21/31

The defense was not officially notified of PFC Mannings pending move until twentyminutes before the Pentagons press briefing.

This is despite the fact that the Pentagon has been thinking about this for a while.

Although the news of the move came as a surprise to the defense, the timing did

    not.

The defense recently received reliable reports of a private meeting held on 13 January2011, involving high-level Quantico officials where it was ordered that PFC Manningwould remain in maximum custody and under prevention of injury watch indefinitely.

The order to keep PFC Manning under these unduly harsh conditions was issued by asenior Quantico official who stated he would not risk anything happening on his watch.

When challenged by a Brig psychiatrist present at the meeting that there was nomental health justification for the decision, the senior Quantico official issuing theorder responded, We will do whatever we want to do.

Based upon these statements and others, the defense was in the process of filinga writ of habeas corpus seeking a court ruling that the Quantico Brig violated PFCMannings constitutional right to due process.

See United States ex. rel. Accardi v. Shaughnessy, 74 S.Ct. 499 (1954) (violation of dueprocess where result of board proceeding was predetermined); United States v.Anderson, 49 M.J. 575 (N.M. Ct. Crim. App. 1998) (illegal punishment where MarineCorps had an unwritten policy automatically placing certain detainees in MAX custody).

The facts surrounding PFC Mannings pretrial confinement at Quantico make itclear that his detention was not in compliance with legal and regulatory

standards in all respects as maintained at the Pentagon press briefing.

While the defense hopes that the move to Fort Leavenworth will result in theimprovement of PFC Mannings conditions of confinement, it nonetheless intendsto pursue redress at the appropriate time for the flagrant violations of hisconstitutional rights by the Quantico confinement facility.

Americans Clearly Dont Want TheGovernment To Cut Medicare:

Voters Oppose Cuts To Those Programs By80-18 Percent

04.18.11 By STEVEN THOMMA, McClatchy Newspapers [Excerpts]

Americans clearly dont want the government to cut Medicare, the government healthprogram for the elderly, or Medicaid, the program for the poor. Republicans in theHouse of Representatives voted last week to drastically restructure and reduce thoseprograms, while Obama calls for trimming their costs but leaving them essentially intact.

Voters oppose cuts to those programs by 80-18 percent.

Even among conservatives, only 29 percent supported cuts, and 68 percent opposedthem.

Only 44 percent of voters approve of Obamas job performance, while 49 percentdisapprove.

    That was down from 48 percent approval in January, and marked the 17th straightmonth that his approval has been below 50 percent;

A peaceful uprising by army and civilians, known as the carnation revolution (Revoluodos Cravos), ended 48 years of fascism in Portugal.

The regime killed four before giving into the popular resistance.

25 April 2004 By Manny Thain, Socialist World.net [Excerpts]

It started at 12.25 am on Thursday 25 April 1974 when the rebel song, GrandolaVila Morena, played on the radio.

By early evening the end of dictatorship was announced.

    26/31

The Movimento das Foras Armadas (MFA), radical mid-ranking officers, hadexecuted the plan devised by Captain Otelo de Carvalho. Troops secured Lisbonand the second city, Porto. Key installations were taken, ministers arrested.

THE news of the regimes downfall spread like wildfire.

    People flooded the streets.

MFA vehicles were mobbed by adoring crowds.

Thousands of school students marched, shouting Down with fascism.

Red carnations, the symbol of the revolution, blossomed in rifle barrels andfestooned the streets in this festival of freedom.

The ex-dictator, Marcello Caetano, cowered in National Guard barracks.

He was the successor to the fascist regime consolidated in the early 1930s by Antnio

Salazar. Paramilitary groups terrorised left-wing and industrial militants. Independenttrade unions and the right to strike were illegal.

The secret police had a massive network of agents and informers.

    Torture was systemic.

But it was the armed African liberation struggles - especially Angola, Guinea-Bissau andMozambique - begun in the early 1960s, which drove the final nails into the coffin of thefascist regime.

Many mid-ranked officers had been influenced by the Marxism they read in

    counter-insurgency training.

Radicalisation continued in Africa with the brutal repression meted out to the peoplefighting for their freedom. A policy of fast-tracking new officers fuelled the anger.

The MFA set up a junta of national salvation to rule until a provisional government wasformed. Elections were promised within a year. It announced freedom of associationand expression, and an amnesty for political prisoners.

Having suffered at the hands of bosses and landowners linked to the regime, workersdrove them out of the factories and off the land. The editor of the daily, Dirio deNotcias, was forced out on 7 June after print workers seized the presses, publishing a

front-page article exposing his fascist connections.

Homeless people occupied empty properties. Shipyard and underground workers wenton strike for a 50% pay rise. Car workers won a 40-hour week. Bakery and textileworkers struck. Train and tram conductors refused to collect fares.

General Antnio de Spnola was made acting president. The son of a friend of Salazar,Spnola had impeccable fascist credentials. He had, however, called for the easing ofdirect colonial rule, which gave him a certain amount of support.

    27/31

Spnola made one more pathetic bid for power, on 11 March 1975.

But the paratroopers he mobilised mutinied.

The fact that six members of the Esprito Santo banking family were implicated in the

    coup fiasco fuelled further outrage.

Enough With Those People WhoAccuse The Undocumented Of Being

LeechesThe Real Leeches -- Those With EnoughMeans And Political Clout To Exploit

Every Single Loophole In Our Tax LawsNot To Pay Their Fair Share

April 20th 2011 By Albor Ruiz, NY Daily News [Excerpts]

I bet most of you didnt know undocumented immigrants contributed more - much more -to the national treasury last year than General Electric.

    Surprised? Yet its true.

While GE - which earned a whopping $14 billion last year - is reported to have paidnothing, nada, zero in taxes (GE denies it), the undocumented paid billions in state andlocal taxes in 2010.

No, its not me talking; its the Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy (itepnet.org), aprestigious, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization that works on federal, state andlocal tax policy issues.

"The rich are different from you and me," the famous F. Scott Fitzgerald quote, is a muchmore accurate description of whats going on in the country.

  • 8/7/2019 Military Resistance 9D 19 "Ten Years Is Long Enough"

    29/31

To no ones surprise, taxes are still as certain for working people - and whatever is left ofthe middle class - as they ever were.

But for, well, GE and other corporate giants, the only certainty is that many found waysto contribute as little to the countrys coffers as possible.

Closer to home, Gov. Cuomo has announced the so-called millionaires tax will not berenewed once it expires in December, although since it was established in 2009 it hasbrought in as much as $5 billion annually.

There is no doubt, when it comes to taxes the rich are really different.

Ironically the vilified undocumented population, among the poorest and most vulnerablein the country, does its part when it comes to taxes.

They pay sales taxes and property taxes - even if they rent, ITEP said. At least half ofthem pay income taxes.

And, I believe, if they were ever legalized, close to 100% would do the same. "Add thisall up," ITEP said, "and it amounts to billions in revenue to state and local governments."

ITEP estimates that households that are headed by undocumented immigrants (whichmay include members who are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants) paid $11.2 billion instate and local taxes last year. That included $1.2 billion in personal income taxes, $1.6billion in property taxes and $8.4 billion in sales taxes.

New York is fourth in the country in tax revenue - $662.4 million - from householdsheaded by undocumented immigrants, after California, Texas and Florida.

"These figures should be kept in mind as politicians and commentators continue with the

seemingly endless debate over what to do with unauthorized immigrants already living inthe United States," ITEP wisely advises.

Enough with those people - and they are many - who think they are the only onespaying taxes, and who accuse the undocumented of being "leeches" whocontribute nothing.

How about redirecting their fury to the real leeches, those with enough means andpolitical clout to exploit every single loophole in our tax laws not to pay their fairshare?
