DEAR MILL CREEK YMCA COMMUNITY

Spring has finally arrived! The Y is busy with all of our

programs from sports to summer camp registrations and

the wrap up of our Annual Campaign. It is so heartwarming

to walk into the Y and see the seniors interacting, the child

care staff engaged with the children and the wellness

classes as full as ever.

Big news for our senior members - we continue to offer

SilverSneaker® programs, and this year we have added the

Silver and Fit program, which has allowed us to reach out to

even more seniors through their health care provider. Check

with the Welcome Center staff for more information.

If you are a new member or a long time member and you

have not had the opportunity to sign up for your free

Wellness Connection please check with our engagement

team at the Welcome Center to get started.

Coming soon will be bringing MOSSA to our group exercise

classes and Mobile Fit to the Welcome Center. Watch for

more details on these exciting enhancements.

The Y serves so many people from every age and ability,

from those with the ability to pay and those who are

sponsored. We make such a difference in the community and

provide a sense of belonging to all we serve.

The Y Annual Campaign is about serving everyone and our

goal is never to turn anyone away because of the inability

to pay. This year, our Annual Campaign goal is $127,250

and to date, we are 37% of the way to our goal. Our hope is

to not just raise the money for scholarship dollars, but also

to tell our story. With your help we are able to make a

difference in the overall health of our community!

We are always looking for ways to make your member

experience the best it can be. If there is anything we can do

to improve your experience please let me or another

member of our team know!

Thank you for choosing to be a part of the Mill Creek YMCA!

- Kyla Smith, Branch Executive Director

MY Y IS NOW EVERY Y IN WASHINGTON

We want to encourage members to use the Y as often as they can.

Sometimes, it’s more convenient for members to use a Y in a different

location when travelling, near a workplace, or in another region. Now, full

facility/full privilege YMCA members can use other Y facilities throughout

the state. See website for program details.

CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP

As part of the YMCA’s corporate membership plan, employees will enjoy

the benefits of belonging to Snohomish County’s largest and most

respected health, wellness, and human service organization. For more

YOUTH SPORTS (CONT.)

The YMCA approach to Youth Sports is different from many

leagues. We focus on the four YMCA core values of caring,

honesty, respect, and responsibility. Every child gets equal

playing time and we encourage fair play, positive competition,

and family involvement. Our goal is to enable each player to

excel in that other game we’re all familiar with; the game of life.

All of our sports promises no tryouts, no getting cut, and no

bench warmers. All divisions are co-ed.

Our sports leagues are coached by volunteers; if you are

interested in coaching one of our teams please indicate so

on your child’s registration form, or ask about coaching at

our Welcome Center.

EXERCISE AND FITNESS AS YOU AGE

As you grow older, an active lifestyle is more important than ever. Regular exercise can help boost energy, maintain your independence, and manage symptoms of illness or pain. Exercise can even reverse some of the symptoms of aging. And not only is exercise good for your body, it’s also good for your mind, mood, and memory. Whether you are generally healthy or are managing an illness, there are plenty of ways to get more active, improve confidence, and boost your fitness.

Starting or maintaining a regular exercise routine can be a challenge as you get older. You may feel discouraged by illness, ongoing health problems, or concerns about injuries or falls. Or, if you've never exercised before, you may not know where to begin. Or perhaps you think you're too old or frail, or that exercise is boring or simply not for you.

While these may seem like good reasons to slow down and take it easy as you age, they're actually even better reasons to get moving. Exercise can energize your mood, relieve stress, help you manage symptoms of illness and pain, and improve your overall sense of well-being. In fact, exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic, and healthy as you get older. And it can even be fun, too, especially if you find like-minded people to exercise with.

Tips for getting started safely:

Get medical clearance

Consider health concerns.

Start slow

Commit to an exercise schedule

Stay motivated by focusing on short-term goal

Recognize problem

Experiment with mindfulness. Instead

Giving back and supporting our neighbors is part of

what makes the Y the Y. We’re a community and we

lend a hand where we can.

SOCIAL SERVICES

MILITARY OUTREACH INITIATIVE

We understand that military families are under enormous strain. Title

10 personnel are eligible for a Y membership. You and your family can

spend quality time together and enjoy fun activities in a warm,

supportive environment. Visit ymca.net for more information.

FOOD BANKS

We collaborate with the Mill Creek Food Bank to collect food year

round, school supplies in the fall, and toys to help with the holidays. We

have a collection bin located in the breezeway of our main entrance.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

We partner with BBBS to provide a donation drop for clothing and our

annual toy drive during the holidays. You can find the purple clothes

drop box located on the south side of our parking lot.

VOLUNTEERISM & GIVING

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY!

Across the United States, more than 500,000 business leaders,

community advocates, parents, teens, and individuals who want to give

back and support their neighbors volunteer at the Y. In 10,000

neighborhoods nationwide, including Snohomish County, we have the

presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver positive

personal and social change. Y volunteers give men, women, and children

of all ages and from all walks of life the resources and support they

need to be healthy, confident, connected, and secure.

Volunteers of the Y:

Lead our Board of Directors and branch committees.

Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the

community through our Annual Campaign.

Motivate and support youth through coaching our sports teams

and teaching many of our classes.

Make a difference in a child’s future by assisting staff and

supporting children in child care and academic enrichment

programs.

Extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live

healthier through healthy living programs.

Participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors

through food drives, community events and more!

Volunteer opportunities and application can be found on our website at

ymca-snoco.org/millcreek - just click on our Social Responsibility link at

the top of the page.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who

need us most. We count on the generosity of our members and

community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more

healthy, confident, connected, and secure. When you give to the Y, your

gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own

neighborhood. The Y’s Financial Assistance Program is supported by

contributions to our Annual Campaign and United Way.

TOGETHER, WE CAN BUILD A BETTER US

Every day, the YMCA of Snohomish County gives our

community the support it needs to learn, grow, and thrive.

From advocacy to food security, disease prevention to athletics,

football to dance classes, everything we do helps strengthen our

neighborhood and the people who live here.

But keeping our neighborhoods great is a full-time job. Every

day, our community faces new challenges that create a greater need

for the work we do. And we need your help to do it. Your gift can

help Snohomish County and everyone in it shine.

For a better you. For a better community.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

JOIN US ON OUR JOURNEY!

At the Mill Creek Y we have a plan for a better us! Our goal for the 2016 Annual Campaign is to raise $127,250 and with your help we know we can get there. Every dollar raised can help change the course of someone's life, right here in our community.

With Annual Campaign funds we are able to offer program opportunities to those that would otherwise not be able to participate at the Y. These funds provide hope, inspiration, and acceptance to those who really need it.

Please join us on our journey to help write the next chapter for so many families and children, and please consider supporting the Annual Campaign this year through volunteering or donating.

DOESN’T MY MEMBERSHIP FEES COVER THE YMCA’S PROGRAMMING COSTS TOO?

In simple terms Membership Fees support the operations of a Y such as towels, front desk staff, lights, pool heat and lifeguards, equipment, equipment maintenance and upgrades, facilities staff, some portion of our health and well-being staff, etc.

Annual Campaign funds support the mission of the Y such as teen centers and the staff who mentor the teens by providing support and encouragement, school age child care financial assistance so families have a safe and supportive place for their children after school and before their work day is done, membership financial assistance ensuring the Y is accessible for all, community outreach programs, LIVESTRONG, ACT!, MAP, our Youth Development Centers, the list goes on and becomes increasingly unique depending on the needs of the local community. To put it another way, Membership Fees provide the tools while Annual Campaign Contributions provide the opportunities. Both are important and one can hardly exist without the other.
