LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

As the Chair of the Board of Trustees for Mill Springs Academy, I amprivileged to be part of a vibrant, mission-focused school that truly teachesthe way our students learn. My family is grateful to have had two of our

children educated at Mill Springs—well prepared academically and personally fortheir futures and ready to contribute to their chosen communities. And as Iconclude my final year as a member of the Board, I would like to personally thankthe many parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends who continue to believein the school and provide for its ongoing health.

Despite the current economic turmoil, which tempts many to turn inward andconserve their resources, Mill Springs’ community actually reached outward andincreased their support of the school during the 2010–2011 fiscal year, achieving90% participation in the Annual Fund. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, pleaseknow that we are truly grateful by this show of support. For when our school ishealthy and moving forward, our students have the opportunities and support theyneed to achieve their personal best and to take many steps on the path to realizingtheir dreams.

LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER

It’s About Participation…

This Annual Giving Report details and celebrates our community’scommitment to the School for the 2010–2011 school year. Most notableis the increase in our parents’ Annual Fund participation, which grew to

90% during the fiscal year. Our parents are in good company with the facultyand staff as well as Board of Trustees who continue to support the Annual Fundwith 100% participation.

Such wholehearted commitment is rare among independent schools but is not aplateau to rest on if we are to provide the very best for our students and theSchool. For example, during the 2010–2011 school year our Annual Fundparticipation was matched by increased volunteerism at MSA throughorganizations such as our Parent Volunteer Association, Booster Club, and ArtsAlliance. This not only reflects sincere commitment but also models for ourstudents that giving—time, effort, and funds—is a cherished tradition and vitalto the long term health of the school.

Support for our unique school community happens in many ways—volunteeringyour time, giving of your discretionary financial resources, and providingspecialized expertise. Each of these is equally important to ensuring that ourstudents receive the best possible support as they explore and discover theirunique talents. The generosity of our families, Trustees, grandparents and friendsmakes it all possible.

Robert W. Moore Headmaster

ANNUAL FUND Chair Grandparent Chair Staff/Faculty ChairSharon Davis Bob Clanin Anne Holland

Mill Springs’ Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our school’s development program and contributes directly to thequality of education that takes place at the school. Gifts to the Annual Fund from parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, friends, and alumni are used to keep annual tuition increases to a minimum.

The growth of the Annual Fund reflects great trust in the mission of the school and has established a vital culture of giving as we move forward with our plans for expansion. Great commitment from our parents, volunteers, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and friends of the school has created an exceptional acceleration in the Annual Fund. Continued support of the Annual Fund will ensure a strong future for every student at Mill Springs Academy.

The following are just a few examples of ways in which Annual Fund dollars are spent: n Keep tuition increases down

(annual tuition increases at MSA have remained at 3% over the past 5 years; much lower than the national average of 7%)

n Allow us to attract and maintain valuable staff (through competitive salaries and benefits like 401K, insurance, continuing education)

n Fund our Scholarship Endowment program (5% of the monies raised each year are set aside to help fund our scholarship endowment program)

n Broaden our Fine Arts curriculum (giving students full access to programs in art, theater, chorus, band, media, and broadcasting)

n Provide funds for various classroom enhancements n Covering unanticipated operating expenses

(unscheduled repairs, etc.)

MSA GOLF TOURNAMENTThe “Tee-Off For Technology” Golf Tournament was established in 1998 in orderto raise money for MSA’s ever changing technological needs. Mill Springs is one ofthe only fully integrated laptop schools in the state of Georgia. Because technologyis very costly and MSA is a not-for-profit private academy, our school is activelyengaged in several fund raising opportunities to help this worthwhile program. Allthe proceeds from the Golf Tournament benefit our “Laptops for Learning”program.
