Devine isn’t afraid to credit their influ- ences; the genre-defining works of Nirvana or Green Day’s material during the 1990s. However, the blend they’ve made of grunge and alternative rock from that era is all their own. Travis Smith, who plays guitar and sings, has been a member of the cult of Kurt since 8th grade. Chase Spieker, who just turned 16, has been a drummer since he was 10. The group replaces the former Cumberland County Women’s Shelter, in Vineland, which closed in January. The Center for Family Services, which has been given a one-year contract, currently runs an office out of Vine- land. According to Center for Family Services Vice President Merrilee Rutolo, the group is also now planning to open a “safe house” for victims of domestic abuse, which will be located at a secret address to protect the victims staying there. “We’re exploring a number of different options to best serve women who are victims of domestic abuse and need housing,” said Rutolo on Friday. “But, yes, we are in the process of opening a safe house.” The Center for Family Services is also the lead domes- tic violence services agency in Gloucester County. Uprisings across the Middle East, namely Libya, are playing out at home as oil pro- ducing countries are upping the price of a barrel. The threshold for a barrel is presently hovering around the $100 mark. Once sur- passed, it’s difficult not to note what you’re paying at the pump.
