Expert offers tips ondealing with post-graduation anxietyHOUSTON – Graduating from college marks anexciting next chapter for a lot of people but it alsocan leave some new graduates feeling a bit lost, especially those who return home. Baylor College of Medicine’s Dr. Karen Lawson offers

her tips on how to successfully transition to a postcollegelife.“This is a time of flux because many people are coming out of a col-

lege setting where many things were taken care of, they had a hugecircle of friends and they might have been a part of the Greek systemwhere they had an active social life. That changes after college becausemany people disperse and often move back home. Returning to one’shometown, even if you are supporting yourself, can be difficult,” saidLawson, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the Men-ninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.Lawson said that because of this, many new graduates immediately

feel lost and experience a sense of longing for those years that justended. Most young people eventually find their way, although it maytake a few years, she said.To help ease the transition, Lawson recommends that parents and

The home goods retailer is warning shoppersthat the coupon, which has been circulating onFacebook, is fake."We all know some things are too good to be

true!" reads a recent post on the company'sFacebook page. "We are sorry for any confusionand disappointment this fake coupon has caused. We are partnering with Facebook to have thesecoupons removed. Thank you for your under-standing!"Fact-checking website Snopes notes that the

"coupon" displays a domain name that's not partof the company's legitimate website; users arethen asked to follow simple instructions, like fillingout a survey, which doesn't yield a coupon.Judging by the comments underneath Bed,

Bath & Beyond's post, the scam has indeedcaused a lot of confusion and frustration. If youcome across a coupon from the retailer andyou're not sure if it's legit, the company encour-ages you to contact your local store or call its cus-tomer service phone number,1-800-GO-BEYOND.

Unfortunately, this isn't the only fake Mother'sDay deal out there. Lowe's Home Improvementrecently stated that Facebook coupons advertis-ing $50 or $100 off a purchase are scams."These offers are a phishing scam to gather in-

formation and are not affiliated with Lowe's in anyway," it said in response to an inquiry from aFacebook user.

Expert offers tips on dealing with post-graduation anxietygraduates who plan on living at home sit down together andmap out an idea of what expectations they have for eachother. It is important for parents to understand that this is atime of indecision for many young people, she said.“It may not reflect not wanting to move on or laziness or

anything negative. It’s just a time where many recent col-

lege graduates do not know what theywant to do next and so parents have tohave some understanding and patiencewith the process,” Lawson said.Lawson also offered a few tips that new

graduates can follow to help them takethe next step forward. These include:• Taking a career placement class or

test. She said that the process takes peo-ple step-by-step through dozens of po-tential career directions and helps peoplesort out what they like and what theydon’t like.• Networking is another good way to

find out about different career options.• Looking at professional programs or

additional certificates or enrolling in smalldegree programs that will not take yearsto complete also are an option.“Picking a direction that you might want

to work in for five years doesn’t necessar-

ily have to be the one that you end up in for 40 years,” Law-son said. “However, it is a direction to go in, it might satisfya need, it might be a current curiosity but it is also okay tochange careers throughout ones path and not worry thatyou have to stay forever.”Lawson cautions that graduates also can have a hard

time transiting socially as well. For this, she recommends

for them to follow up on friendships they had before college, while also maintaining the ones they’ve made during col-lege.“With identifying of interests, good planning, some tem-

porary work to pay the bills and patience, new grads shouldbe able to transition smoothly into the next phase of life,”Lawson said.
