By Ralph LeeRotating your car's tires is like going
to the dentist. Nobody likes it, but it'ssomething that should be done.
Depending on where and when it hap-pens, getting a flat tire is similar to teethissues. If a tire goes flat in your drive-way, it's like a small cavity that has to befilled. It's annoying but not that big adeal. If a tire blows in rush-hour traffic, you're talking full-blown root canal, andwho wants that? Here are some tips toprevent tire decay.
Most newer model cars are front-wheel drive, and tire rotation becomesimportant because the front tires wearfaster than the rear. The reason for thisis simple: When you make any kind offull turn in traffic or follow the curve ofthe road, more of the vehicle's weight isplaced on the edges of the tires. Thisespecially affects the front tires becausethese are ones that are actually turningwhile the rear tires stay in a straight line. This turning causes the edges of the tiresto wear over time. If your tires wearunevenly, you're suspectible to spottybraking and poor handling-realtoothaches, er, headaches.
Another important aspect to tire rota-tion is the eventual replacement of yourtires. If you don't rotate your tires, you'llreplace them two at a time, and thatmeans always having uneven wear onyour wheels. If you replace your tiresfour at a time-and keep them rotatedregularly-you'll have even wear on allfour.
How often should you rotate your
tires? Well, that obviously varies basedon the amount of miles you drive eachday. Unfortunately, for some drivers, you may need to rotate your tires moreoften than you visit the dentist for acheckup. A rotation is often recom-mended at about 7,500 miles. That'soften the time for an oil change, so do
some multi-tasking and get both jobsdone at once. Check your owner's man-ual to see when it recommends tire rota-tions for your particular model.
How to have your tires rotated hasbeen subject to debate similar to the dis-course over the merits of fluoride.Again, check your owner's manual tosee if there's a specific method recom-mended for your model of vehicle. Ifthere isn't, there are two basic ways forfront-wheel drive tire rotation, and bothare as simple as flossing. One method isto move the front driver's side tire to theback driver's side and the back driver'sside to the front passenger's side. Thefront passenger's side then moves to theback passenger's side and the backpassenger's side to the front driver'sside. Another method is to swap thefront driver's side and the rear passen-ger's side tires with each other, and then
swap the front passenger's side tire withthe rear driver's side. Either methodseems to help the tires achieve moreeven tread wear, and that's what you'reafter.
Keeping your tires rotated on a reg-ular basis can prevent an ill-timed flattire and that can prevent grinding andgnashing your teeth-which is a wholedifferent dental problem.

By Tresa Erickson"What are you going to all of that trou-
ble for?" your sister demands to know aftershe hears you making an appointment witha service station to have your tires inspect-ed. Unlike your sister who lives in theSunshine State, you live up north, wherewinters can be harsh. In order to ensure youget where you need to this winter, you arehaving your vehicle winterized, starting withthe tires.
Good tires can make all of the differ-ence on treacherous winter roads. In orderto prepare your vehicle for the rough weath-er ahead, you must make sure your tires areproperly inflated. Tires lose about a psi ofair pressure every month and every time the
air temperature drops about 10 degrees.Vehicles with under-inflated tires do not han-dle well, especially on icy roads. They alsoincrease wear and tear and use more gas(and who needs that with the price of gasthese days).
If your vehicle is brand new, you maynot have to worry much about the tire pres-sure. It probably came equipped with a tirepressure monitor that will inform you when
the pressure has dropped below a certainpoint. If you have an older vehicle, you willdefinitely need to keep an eye on the tirepressure and have your tires checked regu-larly.
You also need to keep an eye on thetread depth. The more worn and shallow thetread on your tires, the less grip you willhave on the road. Depending upon whereyou live and how treacherous the roadsbecome in the winter, you might want to con-sider switching to winter tires. Designedspecifically for icy roads, these will provideyou with superior grip. Keep in mind thatyou will need to replace all four tires.Should you do just the back two, you willcompromise your grip and your safety. To
ensure this does not happen, some tire deal-ers refuse to sell consumers fewer than fourtires, unless they need a single replacementwinter tire.
It is important that you winterize yourvehicle. Start with the tires and work yourway up. The better prepared your car is forwinter, the safer you will be when out andabout.

By Ralph LeeYou may not know what end of a wrench
to hold, but anybody can get a grip on thesehelpful car care tips.
Get the soap
Perhaps the simplest thing to do to takecare of your car is to wash it on a regularbasis. Washing your car once a week canhelp keep at bay the bugs, tar and otherdebris that can build up over time. Given afoothold, these things can become nearlyimpossible to clean off. If you can't manage aonce-a-week wash, try for once a month. Ifyou can't manage once a month and youhave kids, hire 'em out.
Check the oil. Stat!Your car's oil is like its blood. It needs to
be checked regularly. Check your owner'smanual for the type of oil your car uses andwhere the oil dipstick under the hood is locat-ed. At least once a month, check your oil level.Top it off if necessary. All you need is the oil,a funnel and some paper towels to clean upany mess.
And while you're checking the oil...
Your car has other fluids that need to bechecked every so often as well. These includeautomatic transmission fluid, coolant (anti-freeze), brake fluid, differential oil and powersteering fluid. Consult your owner's manual forthe location of these fluid reservoirs. Checktheir levels periodically, top them off whennecessary and have them changed when yourmanual indicates.
Hold the greaseYou're keeping the outside of your car
looking sharp with regular washings, but howabout under the hood? Head to your localauto parts store and check out the variety ofdegreasers available. Follow the directionsand watch your engine sparkle. An added

BY STATE SUPERINTENDENT TONY EVERSAND MEQUON-THIENSVILLE DISTRICTADMINISTRATORDEMONDMEANS
We joined together in April to work on themost important issue facing education in ourstate: closing the achievement gap.
While Wisconsin has had some outstandingacademic results over the years overall highachievement on the ACT college admissionsexams and among the top states for graduationrates we also have some of the worst achieve-ment gaps in the nation for students of color. Allachievement gaps are troubling, and we have
gaps for economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, and English LanguageLearners as well. But our deepest concern, andthe focus of the State Superintendents TaskForce on Wisconsins Achievement Gap, is onthe states race-based achievement gaps.
We brought together 12 teachers and fiveprincipals from public, choice, and charterschools throughout the state to work on theachievement gap issue. These successful educa-tors were from schools where the achievement
gap between students of color and white stu-dents was closing, and the achievement of stu-dents of color was growing at a higher rate thanthe state average. They found common groundin the hard work they do every day to help allchildren reach their full potential. Many of theirrecommendations revolve around the impor-tance of relationships: between educator andstudent, and among adults, as well as honoringcultures that are not our own.
The strategies and best practices advancedin the Promoting Excellence for All report andwebsite are from educators, for educators. October is Breast Cancer Awareness MonthOther than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most com-
mon cancer among American women. Getting mammo-grams regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast can-cer. If you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screen-ing mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 yearsold, talk to your doctor about when to start and how oftento get a screening mammogram.
What Are the Symptoms? There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and
some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms caninclude any change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other thanbreast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breastor underarm. If you have any signs that worry you, be sureto see your doctor right away.
How Can I Lower My Risk? The main factors that influence your risk for breast can-
cer include being a woman, being older (most breast can-cers are found in women who are 50 years old or older), andhaving changes in your breast cancer genes (BRCA1 andBRCA2). Most women who get breast cancer have no
known risk factors and no history of the diseasfamilies. There are things you can do to can help lbreast cancer risk. The Know:BRCA tool (on thfor Disease Control web site) can help you assessof having changes in your BRCA genes.
Although breast cancer screening cannot prevcancer, it can help find breast cancer early, when er to treat. Talk to your doctor about which breascreening tests are right for you, and when you shthem.
Tips for Women with Physical DisabilitiesIf you are a woman living with a disability,
face challenges that make it hard to get a mamWhen scheduling your mammogram, ask the staprepare if you use a wheelchair or a scooter, and machine can be adjusted so you can remain seatell the staff if you need help to sit upright, move ytransfer from your chair or scooter, or get undredressed. Ask how long the appointment is and ifhave more time if you need it. If you have any drelated concerns, discuss them with your doctor.
