Our Cultural Creative CommunityMindful Ways is an innovative continuum support project dedicated to providing strong community-based support for women through preconception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting. We are a growing group of Doulas, Midwifes, Childbirth Educators, Lactation Consultants, and Healing Arts Practitioners, who are Cultural Creative’s shifting the worldview toward wholeness, healing, social change and sustainable communities. We are setting the foundation of a new kind of Whole Wellness Intelligent Care™, blending the science of medicine with the healing arts, to help clients achieve optimal wellness for the whole community.

We have provided services to women and their families in the Santa Clara for three years and have progressed to the next phase; our non-profit Mindful Ways Project. This project will reach those in need in the Santa Clara Community. It will allow for our Cultural Creative’s to reinvest into the community. Starting at the basic level, through education and healing that gives empowerment for the mothers of today, while planting the seed in generation of tomorrow.

Goals and objectives Mindful Ways is a continuum profession that links the gap between the

medical community and home. Low-income communities are more at risk for low birth weight, congenital malformations, obesity, and behavioral issues, due to lake of outreach and community connections. All women, children and families deserve the same physical and emotional support with excellence and abundant access for birthing and parenting education. Clients who need information and support during the child bearing years, must be able to have the resources available and receive the assistance and information they need. The importance of a pro-active, well informed, and educated mother makes for less tax payers money at birth and beyond.

Our Cultural Creative Community is attractive because we have the ability to educate the women in all aspect of the birthing journey. From healing from the past, knowing her place in the present and educating for the future. This Whole Wellness Intelligent Care™ facilitates her, to take ownership of her whole health, which allows the release of unhealthy relationships, physical and emotional health, and understanding the importance of a vital community

The Mindful Ways Project will co-create a Vital Community Training Program, that will allow for job placement and Community Leaders.

Target Population

Maternal, Infant, and Child HealthIn Santa Clara

County

The health of mothers, infants, and children is an important indicator of the health of the population as well as a predictor of the next generation’s health. This data is useful for collaborative efforts by the Public Health Department and community organizations to address these disparities through the assessment of risk factors and the development of programs to improve maternal, infant, and child health outcomes.

Page 9: Mindful Ways Project A Community-Based Doula Project Whole Wellness Intellignet Care

Key Findings•About 2 in 10 adults ages 18-64 do not have health insurance in Santa Clara County including 3 in 10 African Americans and 4 in 10 Hispanics.

•Hispanic females have the highest birth rate in the County.

•African Americans continue to have the highest rates of infant mortality, low birth weights, and preterm births.

•Suicide rates are higher among Whites at 9 per 100,000 people compared to 6 for Asians and 6 for Hispanics.

•Four in 5 TB cases in Santa Clara County were amongAsian/Pacific Islanders (78%) in 2008. Hispanics accounted for 14% of the TB cases in the County.

Healthcare Access and Health Burdens

Access to health care is often determined by whether a person has health insurance. Having no or limited access to health care is associated with poor perception of health, poor overall productivity, increases in hospital admissions for conditions that can be managed with outpatient care, and increases in premature death. This information address barriers to accessing healthcare services and the disparities that exist among various population groups in Santa Clara County.

Page 10: Mindful Ways Project A Community-Based Doula Project Whole Wellness Intellignet Care

Facts for Santa Clara CountyAn uninsured healthy pregnancy can be a financial strain on

young families, and a catastrophe in the case of a high-risk birth.

The costs can spiral even further if a baby is born prematurely: In another study conducted using data from 2009, the researchers found that a year's worth of health care for a premature baby averages $55,610, compared with $9,830-$17,00 for a healthy, full-term infant.

Childbirth costs also are financed in part by taxpayers: Medicaid (called Medi-Cal in California) finances about 40 percent of deliveries in the United States, according to the study. At Santa Clara County's safety-net hospital, Valley Medical Center, about 95 percent of the nearly 6,000 babies born each year are covered by Medi-Cal.

Santa Clara and Community HealthRisk factors that lead to chronic disease are on the rise.

The percentage of adults in Santa Clara County who are overweight or obese increased from 52% in 2000 to 56% in 2009.

The percentage of adults with high blood pressure increased from 20% in 1997 to 26% in 2009.

Obesity among teens is high. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among middle and high school students in the County remains at 25%.

The adult diabetes rate is up. The percentage of adults who were told by a health professional that they have diabetes increased from 5% in 2000 to 8% in 2009.

Page 13: Mindful Ways Project A Community-Based Doula Project Whole Wellness Intellignet Care

ConclusionAlthough there are several positive trends, health disparities

persist among certain subgroups. In addition, some health factors that increase the risk for chronic diseases are on the rise and with one of the disparities being the lack of continuity in care, this will only cause more financial, physical and emotional stressors for our future Santa Clara County Community.

We come to Santa Clara County with a solution. With the rising disconnect of physical, mental, and emotional health and the loss of community, we can bridge the gap with continuum Whole Wellness Intelligent Care™.
