Origins of the character5edit6

7once"t art from early 1928- the drawin+s, which are the earliest of ickey ouse, also show a female ersion

of the character %lower ri+ht), from the collection of  !he Walt Disney *amily useum.

In 1928, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created ickey ouse to act as a re"lacement to his "reious

star  swald the Aucky /abbit. But ickey could not fill the oid alone. ?mon+ the few consistent

character traits swald had deelo"ed before moin+ on to Uniersal Studios was his near:constant

"ursuit of "otential sweethearts. So for ickey to hae a chance to emulate his "redecessor at

flirtin+, someone had to re"lace swald3s many loe interests. !his re"lacement to iss /abbit,

iss 7ottontail, *anny and an uncertain number of unnamed nurses and dancers was to become

innie ouse.

innie was desi+ned in the fashion of a #fla""er # +irl. 4er main outfit consisted of a short fla""er +irl

dress that often reealed her distinctie "atched knickers. In the 1929 cartoon !he Carnial Cid it

was also reealed that she wears black stockin+s which were also fashionable amon+ fla""er +irls.

4er shoes are "robably her most distinctie article of clothin+. *or comedic effect, she wears oer:

sied hi+h heeled "um"s that are too bi+ for her feet. 4er heels often sli" out of her shoes, and she

een loses her shoes com"letely in !he $allo"in3 $aucho. When she walked or danced, the cli" clo"

of her lar+e "um"s were usually heard clearly and often went with the rhythm of the music that was

"layed in the back+round. ?lon+ with ickey, she was redesi+ned in 19(. 4er hat was re"laced

with a lar+e bow, and bows were added to her shoes as well. 4er eyes were also +ien more detail.

!hrou+hout the forties and fifties, her look and "ersonality became more conseratie. innie almost

always wears red or "ink, but in her early a""earances she could be seen wearin+ a combination of

blue, black or +reen %when not de"icted in black and white).

innie3s early "ersonality is "layful, musical and flirtatious. She often "ortrays an entertainer like a

dancer or a musician that ickey is tryin+ to win the affection of. Eart of the comedy of these early

shorts is the aryin+ de+ree of success ickey has in wooin+ innie. Unlike later cartoons after the

redesi+n, innie often becomes a damsel in distress that ickey tries to rescue. She is also subFect

to a lot of sla"stick and rubber hose animation +a+s. er the course of the thirties, innie3s and

ickey3s relationshi" solidified and they eentually became a steady cou"le.

innie first a""eared in Plane Crazy .5(6 innie is inited to Foin ickey in the first fli+ht of his aircraft.

She acce"ts the initation but not his re=uest for a kiss in mid:fli+ht. ickey eentually forces innie

into a kiss but this only results in her "arachutin+ out of the "lane. !his first film de"icted innie as

somewhat resistant to the demandin+ affection of her "otential boyfriend and ca"able of esca"in+

his +ras".

!heir debut howeer featured the cou"le already familiar to each other. !he ne@t film featurin+ them

was The Gallopin Gaucho.5;6 !he film was the second of their series to be "roduced, but the third to

be released, and was released on December , 1928. We find innie em"loyed as the Cantina

!rgentina, a bar and restaurant established in theEam"as of ?r+entina. She "erforms the !an+o for

ickey the +aucho and Black Eete the outlaw. Both flirt with her but the latter intends to abduct her

while the former obli+es in sain+ the Damsel in Distress from the illain. ?ll three characters actedas stran+ers first bein+ introduced to each other.

But it was their third cartoon that established the definitie early look and "ersonality of both ickey

and innie, as well as Eete. "team#oat $illie,506 was the third short of the series to be "roduced but

released first on Goember 18, 1928. Eete was featured as the 7a"tain of the steamboat, ickey as

a crew of one and innie as their sin+le "assen+er. !he two anthro"omor"hic mice first star in

a sound film and s"end most of its duration "layin+ music to the tune of #!urkey in the Straw#.

Minnie's Yoo-Hoo5edit6

4er ne@t a""earance was ar+uably more si+nificant. Mickeys %ollies %&une 20, 1929), 5<6 featured the

first "erformance of the son+ #innie3s oo:4oo#. &The guy they call littleMickey Mouse# for the first

time addresses an audience to e@"lain that he has &Got a s'eetie# who is &(either fat nor skinny #

and "roudly "roclaims that &"hes my little Minnie Mouse#. ickey then "roceeds in e@"lainin+ his

reaction to innie3s call. !he son+ firmly establishes ickey and innie as a cou"le and e@"resses

the im"ortance innie holds for her male "artner. Soon it would become the theme son+ to all of

their series.
