Oil Absorption NYTAL talc has low oil absorption in the 25-40g/100g range. NYTAL 3300 and 7700 grades have a narrower PSD and lower oil absorption than standard Nytal grades. Minex ® oil absorptions are even lower (20-35g/100g), allowing higher loadings and increased solids volume in primers and topcoats to meet increasingly stringent VOC regulations without compromising rheological properties. pH The pH of NYTAL talc is in the 9.5 to 10 range. The pH of Minex ® is similar, providing formulation compatibility and package stability. Brightness Vanderbilt reports GE brightness values of 88 or higher for NYTAL. Minex ® offers TAPPI brightness values in the 80-90 range for clean, crisp whites and tint bases. Weathering Minex ® S-4, Minex ® S-7, and Minex ® S-10 are the industry standards for colour retention and chalking resistance. Minex ® provides superior colour retention and chalk, dirt and mildew resistance when compared to Nytal. Weathering studies are available upon request. Minex ® Functional Fillers Morphology NYTAL talc, produced in Gouverneur, New York by R T Vanderbilt, is a mineral mixture containing approximately 70% tremolite, a hard silicate, and 30% platy talc. As such its behaviour in paint formulations is more similar to hard fillers such as Minex ® than it is to traditional talcs. It can be seen from the micrographs below that both minerals have an angular morphology. V.08.2011 Replacement for Nytal Industrial Talcs Figure 1 Nytal ® Figure 2 Minex ®
