Brooklands Mini DaySunday 27th March

Brooklands is a unique place being thebirthplace of British motorsport, avia-tion and many other modern Britishtechnologies and innovations. Con-struction was started during 1907 inWeybridge, Surrey, by wealthy land-owner Hugh Locke King originally as amotor-racing circuit. But the site devel-oped rapidly into more than that, overthe following 80 years it became arenowned centre of innovation, tech-nology and engineering excellence, putting Britain forefront of motoringand aviation during the 20th centaury.

The racing circuit’s peak was duringthe 20’s and 30’s with records beingset and broken by the likes Sir Mal-colm Campbell, John Rhodes Cobband many others, in motoring master-pieces such as Napier, Mercedes,Bentley and Bugatti, all built and main-tained by the top engineers of the era.Due to the requirements of speed andspectator visibility the track was builtas a 100  ft wide, 2.75  miles long, banked oval, with the banking reach-ing almost 30  feet high in places. Inaddition to the oval, a bisecting"Finishing Straight" was built, increas-ing the track length to 3.25  miles, ofwhich 1.25  miles was banked. Alongthe centre of the track was a painteddotted line, known as the 50 foot line,

where if a car was above it on thebanking the car would follow the trackwithout the driver touching the wheel! In its heyday the track could host over280,000 spectators, but unfortunatelyonly a small section of the bankingremains today. During both WorldWars racing ceased as the site wasused for war-time and military aircraftproduction. Finally as a result of ene-my bomb damage to the track duringWorld War 2, motor-racing sadly end-ed at Brooklands.

As well as glorious motoring history,Brooklands was the birthplace of theBritish aviation industry, with A V Roemaking their first powered flight trialsduring 1908 at Brooklands. Many ofthe great British planes such as theSopwith Pup, Camel, the Hawker Hur-ricane, the Vickers Wellington, andmany more legendary planes, all be-ing developed and tested at Brook-lands. In the post-war years militaryand civil aircraft development contin-ued, producing classic aircraft such asthe Viscount, Vanguard and VC-10.Developments at Brooklands duringthe 1960’s lead to the design andbuilding of Britain’s ill-fated TSR-2 su-personic fighter, who’s technologywas used in the ultimate queen of theskies Concorde!

Finally after 80 years of history BritishAerospace finally closed its doors atBrooklands’ to leave us themagnificent monument to British tech-nology, innovation and engineering.

Brooklands Museum is a great placeto visit and is almost four museums inone, covering aviation, motor cars, motorcycles and bicycles, with mayinteractive exhibits, including a Con-corde simulator and of course Con-corde it’s self!

The atmosphere around the place waswarm and friendly as Classic Mini andBMW MINI owners enjoyed a greatday and venue together, with well overa 1,000 vehicles. Owners clubs thatattended were, The Thames ValleyMini Club, London & Surrey Mini Own-ers Club, Essex Mini Club, West Sus-sex Mini Club, Brighton Mini Club,Portsmouth and Southampton MiniOwners Club, Elf & Hornet Register,Old Skool Mini Club, Mini CooperClub, Bournemouth Mini Club, SurreyHills Mini Club, Blakehill Minis, SouthCentral Mini Club, Eastbourne MiniClub, Southern Mini Owners Club,MINI Clubman Register, Mini CooperOxfordshire Register, Kentish MiniClub, Mini Diddlers, Compass Mini

MINI returns to Monte Carlowith old and new models.

Monte Carlo, 2nd February, 2011.MINI is back in Monte Carlo and thistime it is the iconic version that wonthe famous rally in the sixties meetingup with the latest MINI WRC that seesthe brand back on the world rallystage. Rauno Aaltonen (FI) was driv-ing the 1960's version when he wasgreeted at the end of the Rallye MonteCarlo Historique in the early hours ofthe 2nd February by Kris Meeke (GB)and Dani Sordo (ES), the drivers whowill revive the brand’s rallying traditionthis year.

For Meeke and Sordo this is a stop onwhat is a busy schedule leading up tothe first appearance of the MINI WRCon selected FIA World Rally Champi-onship events in 2011, prior to a fullassault on the championship in 2012.However, before that they will beheading from Monaco to Spain to puttheir brand new test car through itspaces. Then on the 13th April comesthe official launch of the MINI WRCTeam at the plant in Cowley, Oxford(GB) where MINI models are pro-duced.Aaltonen, who won the 1967 MonteCarlo Rally in a works Mini, covered4,101 kilometres on the rally that tookhim and his co-driver, Helmut Artack-er, from the start in Marrakech on the26th January to the principality’s har-bour for the finish in the early hours ofthe 2nd February. His comments on the

event were: “It has taken us a longtime to get here and it was a good trip.In the old days a Mini in rallying formwas rather uncomfortable, but in thisMini we had modern shock absorbersand it was so comfortable that afterover 4,000 kilometres I am not tired atall. There was snow in places, but wewere not told about this so we did nothave the appropriate tyres and so lostover a hundred places. It was reallybusy on this last leg, we were reallyfighting hard and it was a great atmos-phere.”

Also in Monte Carlo to greet Aaltonenwas another famous Mini driver, Pad-dy Hopkirk from Northern Ireland, whowon the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964.Remembering that time he said: “It isvery interesting to be here and I wasdelighted to see Rauno looking so welland the car looking so good. It is justgreat to see it all being revived. Whenwe won it was not just motorsportnews, but front page news and I evengot a telegram from the Beatles andthe Prime Minister and I was given thekeys to Belfast. I do admire the talentsof these guys. Kris took me around theProdrive test track in the MINI WRCand it was absolutely fantastic.”

Meeke and Sordo are both keen tostart their rally programme. “It is greatfor Dani and me to be competing forMINI and taking up that legendaryspirit . Everything is going extremelywell and I think the fundamental DNAof the car is very, very good. At thisearly stage of the development every-one is really excited as it seems to be

hitting all the targets that were set outin the development phase, ” saidMeeke.

Sordo was also relishing the taskahead of him: “I have driven the carless than Kris but I have been on bothtarmac and gravel. Honestly the feel ofthe car was really good. We still needto improve in certain areas, but this isnormal because the car is new. OurMINI is new to rallying but in Prodrivewe have a lot of experience and theyhave achieved many things in thesport. Kris and I will try to do the bestwe can. At the moment the car is reallygood and getting better and better.”MINI WRC TEAM Press release
