The recording system in your MiniDisc recorder isradically different from those used in cassetteand DAT decks and is characterized by thelimitations described below. Note, however, thatthese limitations are due to the inherent natureof the MD recording system itself and not tomechanical causes.

• "Disc Full" lights up even before the dischas reached the maximum recording time(60, 74 or 80 minutes)

When 255 tracks have been recorded on thedisc, "Disc Full" lights up regardless of the totalrecorded time. More than 255 tracks cannot berecorded on the disc. To record new tracks, eraseunnecessary tracks or use another MD.

• "Disc Full" lights up before the maximumnumber of tracks is reached

Fluctuations in emphasis within tracks aresometimes interpreted as track intervals, incrementing the track count and causing the"Disc Full" indication to light up.

• The remaining recording time does notincrease even after erasing numerousshort tracks

Tracks of under 12 seconds in length are notcounted and so erasing them may not lead to anincrease in the recording time.

System limitations• Some tracks cannot be combined with

othersTrack combination may become impossiblewhen tracks are edited.

• The total recorded time and theremaining time on the disc may not totalthe maximum recording time (60, 74 or 80minutes)

Recording is done in minimum units of 2seconds each, no matter how short the material. The contents recorded may thus be shorter thanthe maximum recording capacity. Disc space mayalso be further reduced by scratches.

• Track created through editing may exhibitsound dropout during searchingoperations.

• Track numbers are not recorded correctlyIncorrect assignment or recording of tracknumbers may result (1) when CD tracks aredivided into several smaller tracks during digitalrecording, or (2) when certain CDs are recordedwith the Level Sync On for automatic trackmarking.

• TOC indicator appears for a long timeIf the inserted recordable disc is bland new, theTOC indicator appears on the display longerthan those that have been used.

48

Rule 2You can record the digital input signal of a digitalsatellite broadcast onto a recordable MD via thedigital input terminals on MD recorder which iscapable of handling a sampling frequency of 32kHz or 48 kHz. You can then record the contentsof this recorded MD (first-generation) ontoanother recordable MD via digital input terminalson the MD recorder to create a second-generationdigital copy.Note, however, that with some BS tuners, second-generation digital copying may not be possible.

Guide to the serial copy managementsystemSince your MD unit uses the Serial CopyManagement System (SCMS), MDs recordedthrough the digital input terminal cannot beused to make subsequent copies to other MDsthrough the digital output terminal. Thefollowing diagram shows a system for makingcopies through the digital or analog terminals.

Rules for digital recording

Rule 1You can record digital source (CD, premasteredMD, and DAT equipment with a samplingfrequency of 44.1 kHz) to a recordable MDthrough the digital input terminal. However, you cannot make subsequent copiesfrom the recordable MD to other recordableMDs through the digital output terminal.Subsequent copies can only be made throughanalog output terminal.

Rule 3A recordable MD with material recorded fromanalog sources (analog records or FM programs, etc.) through the line input terminal can becopied to another recordable MD through thedigital output terminal. However, you cannot make subsequent copiesfrom the recordable MD to other recordableMDs through the digital output terminal.Subsequent copies can only be made throughanalog output terminal.

* When MD recorders are connected usinganalog terminals, the number of dubbings isnot limited.

TroubleshootingIf you encounter a difficulty while using your unit, use this troubleshooting guide as an aid toremedy the problem. Because the unit contains a microcomputer to provide advanced functions, itmay malfunction due to external noise or static electricity. If this happens, disconnect the powercord and then plug it in again after about 5 seconds. You must also be sure that the systemcomponents are properly connected. If the MD recorder still does not operate correctly, disconnect the power plug, then plug it in againwhile pressing EDIT/NO button and YES button simultaneously. Note that any TOC informationheld in this MD recorder will be erased by this operation. If the problem persists even after you trythis remedy, or it is not listed in the table, disconnect the power cord and then consult the shopfrom which you purchased the unit or your nearest ONKYO service station, informing them of yourname, address, phone number, type of unit, and the details of the problem.

Symptom

The unit does not operateor operates poorly.

The unit does not play.

The sound has a lot ofstatic.

The unit does not record.

Remedy

• Take the disc out and insert it again. If "Disk Error" remains, replace thedisc. (See "Precautions for handlingthe MiniDisc (MD)" on page 51)

• Take the MD out and leave the unit in awarm place for several hours until themoisture evaporates (See page 50).

• Press the STANDBY/ON button toturn the unit on.

• Slide the MD into the disccompartment with the label sideup and the arrow pointing towardthe opening until the unit grips it(See page 14).

• Replace the disc with one that hasbeen recorded.

• Move the unit away from thesource of strong magnetism.

• Close the record-protect hole (Seepage 36).

• Make connections properly to thesound source.

• Adjust the recording level properly.

• Replace it with a recordable disc.

• Replace it with another recordabledisc with fewer recorded tracks.

• Connect the optical digital cableproperly or use analog input.

• The contents of the recording may belost permanently. After connectingthe power cord or immediately afterpower has been restored, press theSTANDBY/ON button. (See page“Storage Period of Backup Data”.)

Cause

• The disc may be damaged ("DiscError" appears).

• Moisture has formed inside theunit.

• The unit is not on.

• The disc is inserted in the wrongdirection.

• The disc may not be recorded (thetrack numbers do not appear).

• Strong magnetism from atelevision or a similar device isinterfering with operations.

• The disc is record-protected("Protected" appears).

• The unit is not connectedproperly to the sound source.

• The recording level is too low.

• A premastered disc is inserted.

• There is not enough time left onthe disc.

• The optical digital cable for audiouse is not connected properly.(“D. In Unlock” appears.)

• There has been a power failure orthe power cord has beendisconnected.

(Continued to the next page)

50

Symptom

The disc name or trackname cannot be entered.

System function cannot beused.

Remedy

• Close the record-protect hole (Seepage 36).

• Replace it with a recordable disc.

• Check all cable connections. Thesystem functions cannot be usedeven if remote control (z) cablesare connected. Also connect thecomponents using audio cables.

Cause

• The disc is record-protected(“Protected” appears).

• A premastered (read-only) disc isinserted (“Cannot Rec” appears).

• The system functions cannot beused.

If the unit does not operate properly even after attempting the prescribed remedies, unplug andthen plug in the power cord again.

Troubleshooting (Continued)

CondensationThis is the same phenomena that causes windows to become misted up with water drops in aheated room during the winter. The MD recorder also sometimes gets dew (water drops) on the optical lens inside the player underthe following conditions.• Immediately after you turn a heater on.• If the MD recorder is placed in a room with full of steam or dampness.• If you suddenly bring the MD recorder in from the cold outside into a warm room.

If the MD recorder is exposed to dew condensationYou can leave it as it is. Sometimes the recorder cannot read the signal sent from the disc by laserand the recorder doesn’t work.Depending on the surrounding conditions you can remove the disc and leave the power on for atthe longest one hour. The dew will evaporate and the recorder will work properly. If it doesn't workafter several hours, please consult the nearest Onkyo authorized service center.
