THE SOLUTION

» Minimal Quantity Lubrication (MQL) – also known as near-dry machining – is a lubrication method that replaces the use of large quantities of conventional metalworking fluids, by lubricating cutting tools with a fine spray of oil exactly when and where it is needed

» The leading manufacturer of the MQL machines had approved a competitive fluid as a result of customer references

» However, a major OEM who utilized the manufacturer‘s MQL machines started to experience equipment failure with the competitive product. Quaker worked with the manufacturer and offered to investigate the possible causes of the failure

» An extensive study was done in the Quaker lab which eventually showed an incompatibility between the incumbent fluid and key valve components while the Quaker fluid did not show such incompatibilities

CHALLENGES

» A leading machine tool manufacturer supplier of Minimal Quantity Lubrication (MQL) dosing equipment has major global machine tool builders and OEMs as customers

» Some automotive end users and OEMs will only consider trialing MQL fluids if it is approved and qualified by the machine tool manufacturer (MTM)

» Quaker lacked the references for the metalworking fluid technology making it difficult to gain a trial, and ultimately, the trust of MTMs. Other MQL fluid suppliers were approved by the manufacturer as an ‘Oil Material Compatibility Test’ product for use on MQL machines, which was viewed as an advantage by end users

This approval is vital to growing the MQL business, especially with Major Automotive OEMs. Not only were two products finally approved, but a solid working relationship was formed between Quaker and the MTM

» As a result of the product approvals, Quaker is now being considered in several testing opportunities in 2014 in North America, Brazil and India

THE PRODUCT

QUAKERCUT® MQL 45 EAL neat oil belongs to the Quaker range of ecological products, and is formulated with natural based and biodegradable esters. Containing an additive pack with highly doped EP lubricants to provide superior performance for the heavy-duty operations. It can be applied by minimum lubrications equipment to a variety of metals and allows for a wide range of metalworking operations.

The product should be used neat. Main application: heavy-duty metalworking operations.

THE EXPERTISE

Metalworking lubricants represent a very minor part of the costs in a metalworking process, typically less than 1%. This case illustrates the importance of correct fluid selection. The impact of the fluid can be a multiple of its costs, making the price of a metalworking fluid insignificant.
