The Minimally Invasive CardiothoracicSurgery Center of Excellence at RoperSt. Francis Healthcare is dedicated to theclinical performance of cardiac and non-cardiac thoracic surgery throughlimited incisions using the mostadvanced surgical techniques. Our goal is to make our patients’experience as smooth and successful aspossible. To do this, we haveimplemented several proccessesincluding:

• All of our diagnostics and proceduresare performed at the state-of-the artRoper St. Francis Heart & VascularCenter. Here patients can receive allthe treatments they need in onecomfortable location.

• The referring cardiologist maycomplete diagnostic work-ups or thepatient may be referred and allnecessary tests are performed at theHeart & Vascular Center.

• The Center’s staff is happy tocoordinate patient appointments andprocedures as well as insurancecertification.

• In order to make your patients’experience as seamless as possible,Roper St. Francis has partnered withseveral local hotels and transportationcompanies to provide discounted ratesto our patients. Our staff can assist inmaking the necessary arrangements foryour patient’s stay in Charleston.

ELIZABETH KLINE, MD

Dr. Kline is board certified in thoracicsurgery. She received her BA fromBellarmine College in Louisville, KY,and her MD from the University ofKentucky College of Medicine. Shecompleted her general surgery residencyat Virginia Mason Medical Center inSeattle, WA and her thoracic surgeryresidency at the Medical University ofSouth Carolina.

DAVID PETERSEIM, MD

Dr. Peterseim is board certified inthoracic surgery. He received his BSfrom Duke University and his MD fromthe Washington University School ofMedicine. He completed his residenciesin general and cardiothoracic surgery atDuke University Medical Center.

SCOTT ROSS, MD

Dr. Ross is board certified in thoracicsurgery. He received his BS fromBucknell University in Lewisburg, PA,and his MD from the University ofVirginia School of Medicine. Hecompleted his residency in generalsurgery at the University of VirginiaHealth Sciences Center and a residencyin cardiothoracic surgery at StanfordUniversity Medical Center.

JOHN SPRATT, MD

Dr. Spratt is board certified in thoracicsurgery. He completed his BA at theUniversity of Colorado and his MS fromthe University of Missouri. He receivedhis MD from the Washington UniversitySchool of Medicine and completed hisresidency at Duke University MedicalCenter.

What are the advantages of aminimally invasive operation?

There are several clear advantages toperforming minimally invasiveprocedures including:

• Faster return to normal activities. Mostpatients fully recover in 2 to 3 weeks asopposed to 6 to 8 weeks aftertraditional sternotomy cases.

• Shorter hospital stay

• Reduced trauma and pain

• No splitting of the breastbone

• Minimal blood loss and less need fortransfusion

• Decreased wound infection

• Better cosmetics and a positive impacton patients’ lifestyle

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTONS

Who is a candidate for minimallyinvasive valve surgery?

• A patient with a leaking (regurgitant)or blocked (stenotic) aortic, mitral ortricuspid valve can be considered forthis procedure.

• Age is not a contraindication.

• Patients with a severely calcified aortaor adhesions inside the right chest maynot be candidates for this procedure.

How is the minimally invasiveprocedure performed?

• A small 2 to 4 inch incision isperformed on the right side of thechest.

• The chest cavity is entered and theaortic, mitral or tricuspid valves areexposed through this more lateralapproach.

• The patient is connected to the heart-lung machine via a small cannulaplaced in the femoral artery and vein.

• The operation is performed utilizinghighly specialized instruments as wellas a camera placed in the field.

• The entire surgery is completedthrough this small incision.

Can the mitral valve be repaired witha minimally invasive procedure?

Yes. We take a very aggressive stance onrepairing the mitral valve. Any type ofcomplex repair of the mitral valve can beperformed through this small incision.

Is there any special preparationrequired for a minimally invasiveprocedure?

No. The same diagnostic proceduresrequired for any other cardiac surgicalprocedure will be necessary for aminimally invasive procedure. Thisincludes a cardiac catheterization orhigh-resolution CT scan to evaluate thecoronary arteries as well as anechocardiogram to inspect the heartvalves.

How long is the hospital stay?

Most patients are in the hospital anaverage of 3 to 5 days.
