• Key characteristics, exploration strategy and challenges, typical size and grade, and discovery histories of porphyry, low and high sulphidation, volcanic massive sulphide, orogenic gold systems

Module 4 – 4 HoursExploration Methods and Resource Calculations• Understand the entire exploration process from area selection and project ranking, through reconnaissance

exploration to scout drilling, to advanced project management and resource definition drilling

• Selecting, staking and acquiring exploration and mineral properties; generating and maintaining the GIS database; capture and verification of historical data

• Reconnaissance exploration techniques (remote sensing, geochemical sampling, project mapping and geophysical surveys); timelines and costs; what to expect at this stage; limitations and interpretation of data; project ranking

• Advanced exploration techniques including detailed mapping, infill geochemical sampling and channel sampling, infill geophysics, drill targeting and drilling; timelines and costs; what to expect at this stage; limitations and interpretation of data

• Resource definition drilling; geotechnical, metallurgical and other studies; scoping, pre-feasibility and bankable feasibility; costs and timelines; understanding resources, reserves and studies

DAY THREE

Module 6 – 4 HoursInvesting in Exploration and Mining Companies• Overview of junior, mid-tier and major mining companies; how they manage risk and fund exploration, capital

requirements and sustaining costs; the difference between exploration and production; investment strategies for each

• Explorers: Understand the very low odds of discovery success; key elements of a successful discovery; evaluating risk and reward; Junior company value curve; press-releases - spotting value, and red flags and fatal flaws; case studies

• Producers: how will a mining project position itself on the capital and operating cost curves; how to value a mining project through its life cycle; peer comparisons and case studies

• How does cut-off grade and head grade, technical studies, management team, company structure, and geopolitical climate affect investment appetite, take-over potential, and overall value

• Scoping, pre-feasibility and bankable feasibility studies: what are they and what do they tell us; can we rely on them; what do they tell us about a projects profitability

Module 5 – 4 HoursMining and Processing Methods, Life of Mine and Sustainable Mining

• What is mining; open pit versus underground mining; understand how deposit type, size, grade and commodity affect choice of mining method; impact of environmental, social and physiographic factors

• Open pit and underground mining methods and equipment; permitting and construction process; timeline; CAPEX requirements; recent trends in mine development, stalled and shelved projects, and CAPEX overruns; economic viability and project feasibility

• Crushing, milling and metallurgical flowpath and equipment; factors affecting choice of process and recovery efficiency; costs of processing ore; final product (metals versus concentrate), transport, warehousing and sale; tailings and waste management

• Life of Mine and reserve/resource replenishment; mine closure and decommissioning; post-mine responsibility; social, environmental and economic considerations

COURSE LEADERSYour course leaders are Dr Chris Wilson and Mr Andrew Tunningley. Both Chris and Andrew are ex-industry geologists who have considerable experience in public markets. Workshops will be presented in a clear and concise manner and there will be ample opportunity to interact with the Chris and Andrew. We assume no prior knowledge of the industry and avoid unnecessary jargon. Each delegate will receive a full set of course notes printed in colour. Andrew and Chris co-own the worldwide geological consultancy Exploration Alliance.
