The intended outcome of being true to our faith is always fruitfulness. The way our
life’s actions bring the knowledge of our God to others and brings God’s Glory to
the earth. Jesus stated that those who abide in the Vine, which is Jesus, will bear
fruit that will last. Our fruitfulness, our achievements indicate that we are
productive, valuable, beneficial, and useful by trying to act as Christ would if he
was here now. It’s about place other people’s needs ahead of our own in the service
of God.
Today such principles are neither instinctive nor popular. They can only ever be
brought about by someone who has deliberately chosen to walk in the footsteps of
Jesus, guided by the Holy Spirit. One who has a personal relationship with our
heavenly Father.
Imagine Jesus stands before his Father, the wounds in his hands, feet and side are
clearly visible. These wounds are a constant reminder of the faithfulness of Christ
in service the will of his Father on Earth and his sacrifice for all people because of
his great love for us.
In our own faith journey there will be times when we will be hurt by other people’s
actions and words, times when some will mock our faith and lifestyle. However,
we walk forward with Christ. We are his eyes of hope and love to other people. We
touch others in his name and bear the fruit of our efforts and faith by bringing
others to our Lord. We enable people to find their place in his kingdom and his
peace in their lives.
Let us continue to work together at Newark to bring God’s Glory to our
community. We will be surprised what we can achieve together in the name of
Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
John 15 v16: You did not choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and
produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using
my name.
Every blessing
Reverend Ken

We continue to support the Foodbank in Newark. The table at the Harvest Festival
was full to overflowing with donated food. The list of goods needed is updated
regularly and copy is displayed in the hall.
Joan and Derrick are still unable to join us on Sundays, and several of our other
members have been on the sick list. Jean Dobbs has been in hospital for an
operation, but is now home and resting. Please remember all our sick folk in your
prayers.
The Craft Fair was a great success. The total raised to date is £601.10. Thanks to
Gail for organising this, and to all who helped or supported this event in any way.
Our Christmas Carol service will be on Monday 7th December this year. Just Sing,
Newark’s Community Choir, who meet for practise in our church hall, will be
taking part. A collection in aid of Beaumond House Hospice will be taken.
At the October church meeting, the details of the Constitution were formally
agreed by all present, and a copy will now be placed in the safe.
The hall has been re-decorated. Thanks go to the Friday Focus group, who donated
a generous amount to redecorate the meeting room. It was agreed to leave the
painting of the church and vestibule until a later date.
The church’s website is continuing to develop. On the website you can find a
range of information including details of services, bible readings, deacon’s duty,
flower and communion rotas, information about regular church activities such as
Friday Focus and Film Club, details of the charities we support, and photographs
of the church members (if anyone hasn’t had their photo taken yet, please see
Mark after a service).
There is also a blog — an occasional diary that Mark is writing. You can subscribe
to this if you have an email address.
If you have not looked at the site yet, and have internet access, please do so. It has
been publicised by the Congregational Federation, and is part of what we said we
would do for our LEAF project. The site has been looked at almost 200 times so
far, including by people from New Zealand and the USA.
If anyone has any suggestions for improvements or things they think should be on
the website, please mention them to Mark and he’ll do his best to oblige.
The website can be found at http://newarkcongregational.com

At August’s Café Church, we looked at the role of music in worship. There was a
picture quiz on identifying musical instruments, and we watched a video of a
flashmob performing ‘Ode to Joy’ from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. We followed
the video by singing a hymn that uses the same glorious tune.
We worked together to try to find some answers to the following questions:
Why do we use music in worship?
Why do we sing hymns?
What does music do that words alone can’t?
How does music praise God?
In September we had a look at some extracts from the TV comedy series ‘Rev’
about the problems of the Reverend Adam Smallbone, a modern Vicar in London.
Between the laughs, this show covers some important issues, and we came to a
couple of conclusions:
Firstly, the most important thing about a church isn’t the number of people who
attend, but what those people who do attend do to bring about God’s kingdom.
Secondly, using financial inducement to get something (in this case a place at a
church school) is actually theft, because the people who get what they want by
doing this are stopping someone else from getting it. Reverend Smallbone, though
tempted by a large cheque, makes the right decision in the end.
The new minister was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed
obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the
door. Finally he took out a card, wrote ‘Revelation 3:20’ on the back and stuck it in the
door.
When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been
returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, ‘Genesis 3:10’.
Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter.
Revelation 3:20 begins "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." Genesis 3:10 reads, "I
heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked."
