From the Minister Rev. Ed HardyIf you want happy, lazy, hazy days of summer; if you want to relax from the

burdens of work and just be peacefully at the shore or in the hammock out back of the house, then don’t read this column. Step back from this rant and place it in your “To be read in September file”. Have a good summer; you have earned the rest my hard working friends.

But, if you want to at least witness for a few moments to the ongoing tragedy in the Gulf and to hear one person’s rant—then READ ON.

Recently in a sermon on the “Things We Can’t Change” I mentioned “things don’t always go as we plan”. The Gulf Oil leak is an excellent example of things not going as planned and not following the plan. Shortcuts were taken. Eleven people died. British Petroleum lied to the public, and made statements about “making everyone impacted whole”; now they are stepping back to the position they will pay every “legal claim”. The “legal claims” in Bhopal, India, continue twenty-five years after the tragic leakage of poisonous pesticide gases from the Union Carbide plant taking the lives of 3,000 Indians and leaving in its wake 20 to 30,000 Indian citizens with chronic diseases. Is this our future?

Page 2: Minister: Rev. Ed Hardy

How long will the BP oil leak continue? How long will the impact to the shoreline continue? How long will the fishing industry be decimated? Will a whole generation of fisherman pull their boats onto dry land to rot? How long will the tourists stay away or find new paradises for vacation? How will the loss of local, small businesses be restored? When will the ecology rebalance? Will it ever?

What if they can’t stop the leak? The list of questions seems endless. The answers are few—if any. We watch the plume of oil

and feel helpless. The “most powerful man” in the world is helpless to change things. Things don’t always go according to plan. Perhaps the “Gulf Oil leak” will make him a one term president.

Aren’t we tired of our government being bought and paid for by corporations? Aren’t we tired of government ignoring the will of the people for deepening the pockets of the rich? Aren’t we tired of being helpless and ignored? It is a crisis of the spirit to be helpless and ignored. I have been so benumbed watching the oil plume. I have been rubbed raw. And the president of BP says he can’t wait to return to a normal life.

Maybe he will return to a normal life or a retired life richly attired, but I can’t help believe that like the Indian survivors’ of Bhopal twenty five years from now we’ll still be gasping for breath or paying the price of this leak at the pump of our addiction. Don’t even think BP will cover all the expenses.

With our spirits challenged and beaten by the easily acquired addiction for more and cheaper gas isn’t it time, like most addicts, to just say STOP! We really need to seek a different way to be on the planet. My teacher says, “Wisdom is what we get after we’ve tried everything else.” Maybe it is time for some wisdom. This government and these corporations aren’t working for us.

Hey, get some sun; have a great summer! May the sun shine in our hearts, Rev Ed

NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS WELCOME!

It is not too late to join one of the many committees that help keep Channing Church a vibrant community. Listed below are the committee descriptions.

Joining a committee is a great way to share your talents with the church and the greater community, and make some wonderful friendships along the way.

Many, many thanks to everyone who has agreed to chair a committee and to those committee members who have already volunteered.

► Fundraising Committee: This committee is responsible for running and overseeing events to raise funds. All funds by this committee and the events are put into the general operating funds, along with congregational pledges. This is the life support of this church.

► Prudential Committee: The Prudential Committee is the main governing board of the church. Decisions regarding financial expenditures or changes in church policy must come before the prudential committee for approval. In this way, the prudential committee acts as a central body, overseeing the work of other committees and integrating it into a single vision.

► Music and Worship Committee: The work of the Music and Worship Committee members can be very creative and satisfying. The main responsibility of the committee is to organize worship services for those Sundays when the minister is away. Committee members also work with the minister and organist to prepare Sunday services.

► House & Grounds Committee: The House & Grounds Committee oversees the condition and repair of the church building and grounds. The committee also oversees expenditures for heat, natural gas, and electric.

► Events Committee: The work of this committee is to put on events that nurture our own church members and open our church up to the community. The goal is to foster growth in spirit and in numbers.

► Welcoming Committee: This committee is devoted to making Channing Church a welcoming place from the moment people first step in the door. The work of the committee is to greet people with a smile and handshake, give them an order of service and if new, some information about our church. Also to continue the process of the Welcoming Congregation Program.

► Religious Education Committee: The primary function of the RE Committee is to support the Director of Religious Education and teachers in fulfilling the stated mission of the RE program.

► Membership Committee: The goal of this committee is to connect with all members of Channing. The work of this committee will include meeting with potential members and explaining what is expected.

► Caring Committee: The goal of this committee is to reach out to Channing members during difficult times.

► Flower Committee: to provide flowers at the altar at members request.

► Coffee Hour Committee: to provide refreshments and snacks weekly after the service.
